  1. Job Sites on Which IT Careers Are Hot and Which are Not? · · Score: 1

I think the easiest way to find the answer to this question is to go to some of the Job sites like Monster.com. From here you can narrow down your search to the fields that you have experience in and get an idea of the number of jobs available for each of these fields. I would expect the ones with the most job openings would be the "hottest" jobs.

Of course you can also take a look at some of the analyst reports who survey IT Managers to see what areas they will be focusing on over the next few years.

I guess the main problem with any of these are that they are somewhat short term outlooks. Although I don't think you are ever going to be able to predict what is going to be hot long term.

Although I also like Waterloo (and I do live there) I think Ottawa has a lot to offer that Waterloo does not. For example, Ottawa has access to lakes, real skiing and cottages whereas Waterloo is at least a 90 minute drive from the closest lake and (real) ski hill. Try comparing the transit system and Ottawa wins hands down. Ottawa also has great museums whereas Waterloo does not. To top it off you can't even find a good Mexican restaurant in Waterloo :-). Granted the price of homes is higher in Ottawa but I don't see why you feel Waterloo is so much better than Ottawa?

I expect that the simple answer to this is to start selling the diamonds online. People could either buy the diamonds and take them to a local jeweler to have them prepared, or alternatively have the online store do the complete preparation. I would imagine that this type of thing could get large pretty quickly. At that point they would be able to give De Beers a run for their money.

This is really interesting to me because for the longest time I have wondered why there are no (to my knowldege) accredited online universities. I mean there are 100's of online courses now, so to me the next logical step is to create a complete online university where you can actually get a real degree just by doing everything online. My thinking is that a university like this can heavily discount tuitions by paying professors a one time fee for creating the online course and then just pay undergraduates to mark and grade the tests.

From my research (in which I am a Prof of Stats), I have found that although it is pretty easy to come up with odds for virtually every possible scenario, believe it or not, the odds will work best on experienced players. The reason for this is that experienced players will typically play mostly by the book. The new players (or players just looking for some fun in Vegas) will be more apt to bet either just to stay in the game or because they don't know any better. Interestingly enough, this completely throws off any odds calculations that you may have. As a result, I typically end up losing more against new players then I would against more experienced ones.

  17. Buyer beware... on Beginning SQL Server 2005 Express · · Score: 1

SQL Server Express IMO is really not a database that any serious company should be looking at. If you really need a free database then like most people on this site would agree, MySQL is a good alternative.

Now we all know that SSE has upper limits to it and the obvious reason MS would do this is to upsell you to the full SQL Server. Most people will logically think that those limits are fine based on their application. I really don't think that is the problem with SSE. The real problem is that MS constantly changes what you can and can not do with SSE from version to version. For example, with MSDE (the previous version of SSE), you were able to replicate to a central MSDE database. Now with SSE, you are no longer able to do that. You have to replicate to an expensive SQL Server database (and purchase a Client Access License). There are a number of other fundamental changes that MS made to SSE from the previous version that could have a huge impact on user applications.

My fear with using SSE would not be the upper limits but what MS will do with the next version that would limit my application or require me to upgrade to a more expensive database.

As a good friend said to me once "Free is not cheap enough".

    Buyer Beware!!!

I doubt this means that the telcos are in serious trouble. First of all most telcos are already getting into VOIP so the majority of customers will stick with them. I think you also have to consider the fact that it would be fairly simply for the internet providers to throttle back the bandwidth of non-friendly (i.e. free) VOIP services to the point that it becomes unusable. This would be especially important for businesses. Almost like the mafia, either use our service or your VOIP gets it. ;-)

See, I disagree with this. Since Windows Mobile has the potential to run more organizational applications and has a "friendly" development environment, people would be happy to move to this device if:

    1) The device could receive emails "truly" pushed to them
    2) Could type emails as easily as they could with BlackBerries
    3) Had a battery life which came close to that of the BlackBerry (and this means that the device is always connected to the network).

It sounds like MS may have #1 and possibly #2, but I question whether they have #3 covered yet.
