While I believe that there was plenty of troll existing in that AC, there was some truth to his post.
Coming from someone that has used a few Unix variants and most every flavor of Windows, I can safely say that people that blindly bash MS OS' are just as ignorant as people that blindly support them. It just so happens that my Windows 2000 box never crashes as well.
Purchasing garbage, cheap parts will cause any machine to fail periodically. Unix is not immune to horrible drivers either.
That AC isn't as wrong as you think, and he certainly isn't 'wrong' just because he uses an MS operating system properly.
> was that dig really necessary?

Was THAT dig really necessary? How about you Preview your post before submission to save yourself from sounding like a complete hypocrit? Just because Slashdot is Linux favored doesn't mean people on here don't enjoy Windows.
Wow... talk about a memory. I did this in my programming class in high school as well! Except, my login program actually called the real netware login screen in the background, and logged the username and password to "{alt-255}" in the root. It was a neat program, for Turbo Pascal!
I'll assume that this post was a joke, because if it was real, it's the most ridiculous advice I've ever read. Are you going to suggest that he go to BeOS the first time his Netscape browser crashes in Linux? How about you offer a suggestion on how to fix his browser in his current situation, instead of putting him through an OS Install to fix a browser crash.
I can't believe how some people can claim so adamantly about liking a specific OS and "getting together to share improvements they've made to an OS", and in the same post disrespect an entire group of people he's too ignorant to see that they exist.
Believe it. There are competent Windows programmers out there that write software to make things easier for -THEIR- favorite OS. I write programs for Linux _and_ Windows myself, but just because you don't like an operating system doesn't give you the right to prejudge those that are actively trying to make community available software for Windows. This makes you no better than those that disrespect Open Source programmers because they aren't making any money.
Sure, there are people out there that put together hacked-up programs for Windows (potentially with VB... I prefer C++), but I can guarantee that there are plenty of matching Linux candidates. I've tried many a Linux program that didn't meet my satisfaction, and it wasn't because there was a superior Windows counterpart.
And don't even bring the binary-release-only garbage into it. Just because a programmer releases something for free does not obligate him to share the source as well (unless he's under license agreements to do so). The argument that you can make the program whatever you want by modifying the source does nothing to help Linux get to more desktops. If a secretary has to hand-code a feature into their Mail Reader to have it, how quickly do you think they'll just go find another Mail Reader?
Sometimes you need to remind yourself that just because Windows isn't the 'only' OS, that it doesn't mean Linux is.
"If I were more of an avid gamer, I would demand that software companies make their games function on linux systems just as good as on windows boxes. I can see it now: the OS Equaltiy Act."
I don't mean this to sound like a flame, but that is ridiculous. You can't expect developers to do such a thing. They develop effectively for whatever platform they know how to. Why not BeOS? Why not Solaris? Are you also upset that console games aren't running on Linux as well? Video game makers probably enjoy what they make, but they are also getting paid for it. Right now, making games for Windows makes money. So they do.
{sigh} Don't get me wrong. I like Linux, and having more games for it would be nice, but without market share, you either need to dual-boot, or deal without that game.
There is a fine line between having a strong like for an OS, and zealotry.
Is it just me, or is it possible that during the "two days" (a week, even), not a whole lot of people were that interested in reading about "Modern Slavery."
Let's get real people... who sees "modern slavery" or "scholarly study" and veers off their search to read it?
I'd say to pick a topic more likely to be searched for, although I couldn't offer a suggestion.
You don't even need a cue cat! You just need a PS2 extension cable, a laser-based mouse, a piece of metal, and some tape. Hanging the mouse from the door, and any full screen app that accepts mouse messages would do the trick!
{This post is a joke, but I guess it would work}.

"Low TV Resolution" is fine, but the PS2 has future support for connecting it to monitors and HDTVs, just like the DC. Besides, bigger textures DO matter when 3D objects are in motion, even at smaller resolutions.
I just wanted to clarify that AOL simply uses the IE4/5 ActiveX Control, so in essence, it is -not- their browser. I just wanted to note that you are using IE when you are in AOL, and you lose nothing by opening the -real- IE. My girlfriend uses AOL, and it just gets minimized right after email.

OK, so I bit. Quite a long way to "JOHN", isn't it?
How's this for my sig?!
char joe[] = "JOE";
int i = 0;
while(joe[i]) putchar(joe[i++]);
BRARR! {g}
The end of the article looks like this (ONLY on Slashdot...):

{snipped other really serious WTC article links}
United Airlines Boeing 757-200 photos: United Airlines Boeing 757-200 photos"
< Programming Linux Games

That just got a laugh out of me.
I completely agree.
One of the greatest anime ever.

Yeah ... "DarkNuts". I remember being an 8 year old with a temper tantrum in Level 3... memories.
Excellent idea! I think I'll do this until they finally catch on.

Can you come up with better ones than he did? Or do you just enjoy writing useless comments like this?
I for one thought it was an interesting way to think of RAM and bandwidth.
"PC's are for work; consoles are for play; board games are for a social life. " WELL SAID!

I know I'm gonna get slapped for this, but the actual quote was "It's so bad", not "It's so rad."
I just re-watched that movie like two weeks ago. God bless Digital Cable.
