Yahoo redirects searches to Google in the countries you mention. The company is a shell of its former self, after it was (I'm sure you'll agree, rather stupidly) reduced from a technology company into a web portal. Now the only way for them to keep showing their shareholders an increase in profits is by selling assets and dismissing employees, which is exactly what is happening. Its sad to see what's become of a once major internet company -- when their employees are kicked out and get picked up by Tucows (they still exist??), you know their glory days are long gone.

I submitted a story here on Slashdot yesterday, but it appears the editors chose to post stories about Vuvuzelas instead. Here's a few bits and pieces from the linked article:

"Anna Ardin (the official complainant) is often described by the media as a “leftist”. She has ties to the US-financed anti-Castro and anti-communist groups [...] at least one of which is US funded and openly supported by a former CIA agent convicted in the mass murder of seventy three Cubans on an airliner he was involved in blowing up [...] In Cuba she interacted with the feminist anti-Castro group Las damas de blanco (the Ladies in White). This group receives US government funds and the convicted anti-communist terrorist Luis Posada Carriles is a friend and supporter. [...] The president of the Argentine Madres de Plaza de Mayo (was quoted) as saying that 'the so-called Ladies in White defend the terrorism of the United States'."

    And the source: http://my.firedoglake.com/kirkmurphy/2010/12/04/assanges-chief-accuser-has-her-own-history-with-us-funded-anti-castro-groups-one-of-which-has-cia-ties/

If all this is true (and it probably is), this woman is no upstanding citizen and I would think twice before trusting her about her motives! To any teabaggers who don't want to believe the US gov could have terrorists working for it: grow up!

Thank you! That's exactly my point, actually -- they don't want their Android remake of the game to have to compete with his remake of the game, so they just take his off the market.

I don't think anyone can deny this is about killing off competition. What bothers me is that it's now 30 years on and they still retain that privilege, and they'll still have the privilege many decades from now.

  10. Re:Modern copyright law is STUPID on Avoiding DMCA Woes As an Indy Game Developer? · · Score: 2

30 years is almost half a lifetime, so yes it's too long. The same thing will be happening in another 60 years from now, so will you be asking for my age then?

So what if the market hasn't died yet? That they can still squeeze money out of Pacman doesn't mean they are entitled to do so. The monopolies given by copyright were meant to be for a limited time only, and entitlement is not a good argument for extending its duration.

And yes, hard work. Just coming up with an idea isn't copyrightable, nor is it really hard work. Being paid rent for something a former employee created 30 years ago is not hard work, either. Creating a tangible form for that idea --the expression-- is. All the code and graphics for the game were done by him, while Namco did nothing except block people from seeing his work.

  11. Modern copyright law is STUPID on Avoiding DMCA Woes As an Indy Game Developer? · · Score: 2

This highlights why today's copyright law is flawed. Pacman was created 30 years ago, and that someone could be sued for it today is just ridiculous. Plus, add to that the over-stretched "derivative works" laws, where things that look similar but are not copies can be legally considered copies (i.e., copyright no longer applies to the expression of an idea, but to the underlying concept as well -- definitely what the founding fathers intended!).

I'm sorry, but it really pisses me off to see someone's hard work being taken off the market because something similar was released in 1980. Take away the copyright protection, and let Namco compete with the OP to make the best clone of the 1980 game!

I thought the only reason they announced what websites were seized was public outcry... Besides, with COICA coming up, I expect online censorship will become just another part of everyday life. Adoption will be driven by need, and if we want to be optimistic, let's hope the need doesn't arise.

From what I read, the new DNS service will basically redirect to the usual ICANN system, except for .p2p domains for which lookup will be distributed. Even if governments censor Wikileaks and TPB .com domains, the .p2p domains will remain. The whole idea is to reassert that the internet routes around the bad parts, and to show to the imbeciles we have for politicians that we won't let them censor our internets.

Even if everyone stopped buying from those companies, they'd still find a way to make themselves a tax. You'll be buying Lady Gaga songs every time you pay your water bill.

The only way to fix things is to: 1) make corporate lobbying illegal and put all politicians' dealings in the open, and 2) perform an evidence-based reform of copyright law to restore it to a reasonable length and scope.

In doing those things, a lot that is wrong with America will automatically correct itself. Alas, things may already be beyond repair...
