  2. Watch for NFSv4 in the future! on Distributed Filesystems for Linux? · · Score: 4, Informative

Watch for the new version of NFSv4. There are already a sample implementation in the linux 2.5 tree. NFSv4 will address most of the problems that NFSv3 and others have. Including plugin security models, namespace, and revamped ACL handling.

It's also WAN friendly, letting several operations be done at the same time with a single directive. (COMPOUND directive) It also allows you to migrate one filesystem to another with no stale filehandles. Basically, it's trying to be an AFS killer.

For more information, take a look at
    http://www.nfsv4.org/

Lots of good info including the IETF spec. It's a interesting read.

The spec is not quite complete. Currently, I believe there are discussions with how NFSv4 will work with IPsec.

I can see a great business model now. We could create a law enforcement company and then we can do all kinds of things that regular cops couldn't do. We could be the Corporate IP Police. It would be a bunch of black suit lawyers and money. Thats all it takes. We can also then create a database of these "known felons" and then sell it creating more revenue. Hell we can even copyright that.

Of course there are legal problems with my idea but continuing to do this could make such a company viable. I can't believe that Congress believes that copyright owners (or should I see middle men) are the life blood of our economy. I thought it was the captains of industry?

Pfah. We need more libertarians, these right/left wing morons are messing everything up.

Exactly! This is rooted in the Vedas. Common man/Man on the street usually doesn't understand this and the various stories and god characters are there merely to illustrate a point. Just as the fables/parables in Christian lore. The major problem in Hindu religion is that people dwell too much on the physical characteristics and less on the spiritual ones. Chalk that up to human frailities that we all have.

I built my own although it's still not quite usable. I had some mobile boards from Intel and I've built my own box using plexiglass (17 bucks approx) I used old IBM thinkpad hard drives for disks so I was able to keep the box small.

The software I've used is irmp3, (http://irmp3.sf.net) It's been working fairly well. In fact, I even got it so that if you hit the power button it does a proper shutdown instead of just dying and ultimately corrupting your hard drive. Other than installing the codecs it's pretty complete.

It only plays music however. Maybe I will do more than that but because of the limitation of the motherboard (Intel 810 EMO) I don't think thats going to happen, it only has one serial port, no parallel port, and two USB. I was lucky to have one with a tv out but it doesn't seem to work. :/

Here is an interesting quote regarding WW1. The war that was considered "The war to end all wars.."

It was "The War To End All Wars,"- a senseless slaughter that set the stage for the bloodiest century in human history.
Yet, it was more than just a war between nations. It was a war between what was and what was to be. The "old world" was dying, and the new world had yet to be born. People of all classes and nations saw it as some great cleansing fire that would accelerate this battle and lead to a better world. But, when it was over, more than men had died in the mud of the battlefields. The naive dreams of progress, along with the innocence of the pre-war world, faith in God, and hope in the future all died in the trenches of Europe.

Well, if you really want to be on the cutting edge why don't you use P2P? That way you can even spread the load as well and not use as much bandwidth. You don't have to use gnutella or kaaza there are other systems out there that you can use. Gnutella would probably be the easiest but it's a nice way to be able to serve files.

Now if you want to serve private files I'm sure there are probably ways to do this as well. I'm not sure. But if you're doing anonymous you might as well use P2P.

This is akin to me writing about you and having you refute what I said. If I wrote that you like to have fun with yourself alone at night with a doll how will you refute it? The onus is on me to prove that you do not the other way around. Otherwise we level accusations at anyone we wish. This is also the basis of the U.S. Constitution where you're considered innocent until proven guilty.
