I generally lean to the left (ie democrat) or libertarian. But Sen. McCain would have been my pick for president. If McCain was had runned I wuld have voted republican for the first time in my life. This guy totally kicks ass. An honest, straightforward person who I know would represent us equally. Unfortunately, we got Bush and his Texas diplomacy. Goddam it, I get so mad knowing that I ddin't get a chance to nominate this guy. :(

  3. This is actually pretty good. on Kid-Safe Domain Created · · Score: 1

I think this is probably the most sensible solution rather than trying to censor sites that may or may not be kid friendly.

We can now use DNS to search only the *.kids.us domain on particular machines while adults can use the other. That way at least is one good way to stop your pre-teen kids from using the computer in their room to see things they probably should not without proper supervision.

This is also creates the assumption that most content is more adult content rather. I much rather believe that than to have companies and parents trying to censor the Internet as a whole as most knee-jerk people are prone to do.

Internet is really an adult oriented culture and not really suited yet for pre-teens. (teens are fair game in my book)

India for instance has a glut of skilled Computer Science people. These people are incredibly smart and incredibly cheap if you hire them in India.

With jobs moving to these nations it's not going to be easy to compete against them. (admittedly I have a slight edge. :-) The question is, how are Americans going to compete against this. Will our government use protectionist schemes or will try to make ourselves more attractive. Thats going to be a very interesting question in the coming years.

As a previous poster said, if you want to do remote admining you should probably get Sun boxes unless you're managing a linux farm or something then you could probably get newer motherboards that allow you to do bios through the serial line.

But check out linuxbios I bet that could help right there without all that wierd hardware you're doing.

It's not clear to me that what the recording industry wants will work with consumers. As a consumer, I would be very irritated if I had to keep paying each time I had to pay for a stream.

I also don't see streaming as being as good quality as a DVD or other local device. It's not "good enough" to pay for and what happens if the net dies while your watching? If the initial market is comparable with what we have today I don't see anybody going for it.

    To wit:

Lets compare the VHS tape market with movie requests from cable or satellite:

    1. I can watch the movie as many times as I want. (more importantly, children who want to watch the same funny scenes multiple times can do so if they want if you're a parent)
    2. it's relatively anonymous. If I wanted to rent a porn movie while my wife's out I can without it showing up on next months cable bill.
    3. I get to keep it for a number of days.
This has been customer expectation for 20 years. If I had to switch to a nickle and dime version I will almost certainly be disgusted and do something else.

Senator Hollings better be careful. Once consumers find out who started this whole mess they'll be fingering him and the Democratic party. Consumers take their entertainment very seriously in the U.S. :-)

LWN filled a niche for me that nobody else could do. It was one of those sites where you got up in the morning and grab a mug of coffee and start reading!

If anything we shouldn't allow LWN to close. We should be running a campaign to save lwn.

Wait a minute here. I remember this thread on gnome-list. (please see: http://mail.gnome.org/pipermail/gnome-list/2000-Ju ne/039883.html)

I'm going out on a limb here. The reason (in my opinion) that some of the widgets are in gnome as opposed to GTK is that GTK widgets did not enforce policy. The GNOME abstraction on top GTK widget set is to also enforce policy. Thats why we have GNOME widgets and GTK widgets. The solution is not to have any GNOME widgets but to have GNOME libraries determine policy for GTK widgets.

As I understand it, some of the widgets will be moved into GTK 1.4. (hey guys someone step in and actually say something regarding this..)

What people couldn't comprehend was why fork the code for GnomeHTML. GnomeHTML was forked to CscHTML because Count Zero didn't want any dependency on GNOME and to avoid the library bloat and to avoid circular dependencies. However, I suggest you read the thread to understand fully the issue.

In the end, GnomeHTML will have configure options to not depend on GNOME libraries. So something was worked out.
