It seems to me that this has really become a commissioned software project. This is how I would handle it. develop a well defined scoped of work with the client. From that project definition calculate how many hour it will take you to complete. add 20%, and multiple by your hourly rate. what's your hourly rate? well from your (limited) description of yourself and the project I'd say around $30-$35. Now think about the value your project has to the client. Are they IBM? are the going to make $10 million in the next year off your code? are they a non-profit? will any money be made by anyone? will your code save the lives of children in Africa? adjust the total according. up a bit if world domination is a possibility for your client and perhaps down a bit if only good will come of it.
Now, remember the project scope you laid out? if the project creeps, even a little, you _must_ go back for more $$, perhaps at this point on an hourly basis. otherwise the job will never end and you'll end up getting paid 33 cents and hour.
Doesn't any one remember the Mac clone tablet that a manufacturer in canada produced? this was ~4-5 years ago? No twisty screen, it was basically a 603 PPC powerbook with no keyboard. It didn't sell at all, and I can't find any info on it now.
I've got to disagree here. While gutella, etc don't cost any money, It's a real pain in the ass the find the track I'm looking for, and forget about a whole album. I'd pay for the ease of use and quality of product.
Besides I do believe that _most_ people want to pay for music it's just that there's currently no way to do it.
Well, it's quite clear the the/. crowd has a certain distaste (to say the least) for Flash. Frankly I'm surprised at the amount of FUD being thrown around. There is a point that hasn't been made yet.
What flash does do is let you author once, deliver any browser, device, handheld, or whatever. While standards are nice in theory the reality is they don't exist. If I'm developing an application in html (plus whatever backend) it has to work on multiple browsers on mulitple platforms, with all the bugs and "workaround" that come with that. Sure I can author for a certain subset of that but that will limit my audience more that the use of flash.
It solves the problem of having to load a new pages for each data exchange. Which is (to me) the biggest problem with web apps today.
And it's just as "dynamic" as anything built in java, or whatever. You can hook flash into the back end of your choice. check out espn's new live game tracker for a good example (the old vers was done in Java, why'd they switch?)
I know the tech world doesn't change that fast, and we have been waiting for mpeg4 for a while, But that MacWeek article is dated Nov. 2000. Somethings might of changed since then

I don't think the Monitor is acutally wireless, I couldn't find any specific mention oother than on the post above.
Let's think about the bandwidth required to display 1600x1200 resolution, Bluetooth doesn't come close to hacking it
A lot of people are making the mistake that the iPOD is only and MP3 player.
First and foremost it is a 5 gig firewire drive with 32 megs of static ram, and input as well as output devices (scroll wheel, screen, etc...not sure if the definition of a computer has changed in the last day... but this thing is a lot better than the powermac i owned years ago).
Ok, very simply it is a slave device. Portable Open Database. You know it will have a calendar, clock and whatever apps apple ads or I myself when i understand the OS... aka palm sync. It will also contain a few games... i still use my original game boy and the screen is not much bigger. Everyone thinks this is only a music device... but this is what everyone needs and doesn't even know it.
Ever since Apple took away our floppy drives. I can now take my excel files, photos, mp3 files, cad files, i can even put OSX on it and boot my mac from it!!!!....or any frickin thing I want in my pocket!!!! Just imagine the possibilities... when I am outdoors with my digital camera i can store files on it or when i am in a conference room I can record my voice on the disk.
Why would Apple put such a large screen on there, why would Apple not once place the words music or mp3 player on the device... why is the file system capabilities of this thing so amazing... no one quite understands what this is... remember all those easter eggs that weren't allowed in 9.1 or X...well they are all in this baby... this is iPod, this is our portable little slave device that everyone will want when they realize what it can do...

how can a codec be MPEG-4 based when MPEG-4 isn't close to finalized yet? What advantages will this have over that standard? Isn't this just adding to the mess? I don't see Industry support coming any time soon.
although I guess mp3 didn't have much industry support either.

I've wondered why no one is talking about this as well. I've talk with many people about it. And despite the fact that they're all smart educated people none of them seemed to care about these things.
I think some people just can't see where we're headed. (Corperate control of everything) Others don't see why this is bad. (McDonald's is our friend!)

If I opened a bookstore online and used Amazon's layout is that infringing on Amazon?
What if I sell something that Amazon doesn't (assuming I could find such a product)?
What if I wasn't selling anything at all, but I just liked their look?
Clearly (to me at least) the layout of a website is protectable. It is the main (sometime only) contact a company has with clients/customers on the internet.
Just because the source code is viewable doesn't mean the author is willing to have other people rip them off.
If an opensource site (linux.com) doesn't care if someone is using their code fine that's their choice, but that doesn't make it okay.
The Macintosh experience is _way_ more than the look of the interface. It is not simply a "mac-looking" windows manager. It's not a theme or a skin, it is how the user interacts with their computer.
this is what people who haven't _used_ a mac don't understand.
Actually, Looks like Macteens beat them.

Yes, its a fine movie. But I found it pretty uneven. Maybe it was the jaded boston audience who were laughing _at_ the movie at parts.
that said, it's a bargin at $10 just for the visual aspect. Stunning, almost indescrible. And the attention to detail is amazing.
I saw the dubbed version in DLP.
My understanding that Carbon apps contain enough legacy code that recompiling wouldn't be an option.
Cocoa apps, on the other hand, are ready to go.
it's the whole yellow box v. blue box thing.
About Damn Time!
with both Framingham and Randolph available in the greater boston area, which do I choose? Any body been to both?
BTW theforce.net's current thinking is that tickets will be available for pre sale May 3rd. (at least at AMC theaters)

There's been so much mis-dis-information about this thing perhaps we should all take a second and read the faq

Uh, actually that is not completey true either.
That is one of the possible modes of operation. but there are others.
You can also update selected playlists, and update manually
