    I would have guessed the difference there is due to moving parts, not scale or complexity.

    Is it just me or has all the hype caused anyone else to just wait for the 2nd gen?

    I wouldn't hold your breath. There are maybe two things I could see them adding: built-in WiFi and more RAM. For wifi, you can simply use USB, and likely make it cheaper than a chip/antenna they could build in. For RAM, it's apparently not cost effective to go to 512MB at this point:

    I have noticed over the years that /. is stereotypically wimpy about basic handyman skills... Buy a box at radio shack or home depot electronics dept and drill a couple holes in it, no problemo...

    Use a cardboard box.

    Oh yeah, because the rising cost of healthcare is something that will make the masses happier.

    Hate to break it to you but guaranteeing a right to healthcare is probably about the best way possible to raise premiums.

    Israel inflates the holocaust, Iran minimises it. Both are half-truths.

    Israel was founded as a modern state on pure, violent terrorism. King David Hotel. They also sponsored and funded the creation of Hamas - to splinter the Palestinian political efforts, and create a spectre of islamic opposition. But Hamas are not religious zealots, like the Lubbavitchers - who throw acid in the faces of young girls on the streets in Israel.

    Data are erased. There's a big difference between that and creating an unauthorized copy, which is the usual scenario this logic is applied to.

    You're making it too conceptual. I'll simplify:
    1) When you share a screen, the things that you actually want to see are made smaller.
    2) Almost any multiplayer game can be played from separate locations, but some--like Poker--cannot really be played on the same screen.

    Are PC games typically discounted such that someone can buy four copies of the PC game for the price of one copy of a console game? Because that's what it would take to make up for the difference in the multiplayer paradigm between the two markets.

    One thing needs to be said here - The captain was probably qualified to manage and navigate a boat. However, you and many of the other critics on this thread wanted him to automatically be a *hero* as well, and found him wanting. I'm not trying to defend this guy, but I find it surprising that so many armchair critics demand such an incredibly high standard of professionalism and performance and even heroism from others.

    This is ridiculous. I don't expect him to be a hero, I expect him to do his damn job. As captain, he is ultimately responsible for all 4,200 lives on board the ship.

    And they are working WITH the publishers, not excluding them. Much as they worked with the record labels rather than trying to exclude them.

    No one yet has really served up the Amazon Killer. But it's lurking. Without going all TinFoil Hat, it's Print On Demand.

    Sorry, the reason people want e- text books is for the size and weight savings. I would have killed to be able to carry around my entire semester's reading in one hand.

    I agree with you, although I would say that much of what you describe suggests a failure of editing than of good prose. The editor should have tossed out entire passages for sure.

    Than a normal USB security token? It seems like a power adapter is likely to be taken with the user. A smaller token could be carried on the person of the user. Or you can just write your password on a post-it in your wallet.

    From what I can see in media coverage of the Republican race, with the possible exceptions of Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman, it all comes down to who can be more conservative than the others, and the possibility of being "too conservative" hasn't been considered, where any amount of "liberal" is "too liberal".

    That's how primary elections work. You have to appeal to the base. Then, nomination in hand, you race back to the center. Rinse repeat. Every four years.

    The only film I can think of where stereo 3D was done properly has been Avatar. Regardless of what you think about plot originality or hamfisted delivery, it was an excellent use of stereo 3D.

    Avatar hurt my eyes. The only 3D movie that didn't that I can remember was Toy Story 3, and that's because it was a very moderate effect.
