If you don't like OOO don't use it. If it fills your requirements then do so. Personally I have both OOO and Office 2007, but only use Office 2007 to open documents sent to me in that proprietary format and for Outlook, as I am used to OOO and it fulfils my requirements. I would love for there to be an alternative to Outlook - the only reason I use it is that Thunderbird won't sync with my phone (N95) - thanks a lot Nokia.
Office software is not really something to get excited over - people getting uppity over one alternative over another need to get out more.

From the article, to be very happy with your job:

    never received the promised training,
    have more bosses than co-workers,
largely chained to a desk of which at least one of the managers likes to instigate petty rules for,
it has never been an ambition of mine to fix tax rounding errors.

That said, in reply to the parent's comment on job security, I was laid off to be replaced by cheaper labour (after a year of such a program).

I'm currently in the process of creating my own company. Working for myself may be risky, the pay may be less, but at least I won't have to put up with middle management!

I agree we shouldn't HAVE to install ad-blockers, but there are many unpleasant things in the world we have to contend with, and when you can do something to minimize the unpleasantness you should do so rather that keep complaining about it ad nauseam.
It is NOT the same as spam - most ad blockers don't download the ad they are blocking, they block the request to retrieve the ad, so yes, you may lose a coule of CPU cycles, but you certainly save a lot on bandwidth.
ISP mail filtering software doesn't stop the flow of spam into an ISP, only to your mailbox, so it is not on the same "logic thread" at all.

As an ex-pat living in the Philippines... Text messaging is rediculously cheap here (US$5 does me 3 months easy), and pretty much everyone uses pre-paid scratch cards to pay for their phone use. However landline phones are rediculously expensive, at about US$20/month - a lot in a poor country. That's why most people use SMS to communicate - it's all they can afford.
It's typical of the IMF to suggest squeezing the poor for more revenue - while the politicians sit back and take untaxed bribes. Heck, you can even bribe officials at the tax department to accept your dodgy tax return. Maybe if they eliminated some of the corruption the tax take would be higher.

  25. Not as bad as a factory but... on Hi-tech Work Places no Better than Factories? · · Score: 1

Yes, I have worked in factories during holidays while studying for my degree, and they were a great inspiration to study so that I would never have to do such work again. However I have discovered working in IT is not exactly the bed of roses promised.
In 8 years I've worked 5 different jobs in 4 different countries, and of those only one had any job stability. The first, IBM, lost it's contract for providing outsourcing, the second 2 were medium term projects, the last 2 discarded all "expensive" staff and switched to labour from the 3rd world.
Every one of those jobs has forced me to learn most aspects of every job in the respective companies, including the managers and overpaid sales staff. Then there is the added pressure of a zero tolerance for mistakes - when any bugs have the potential to cost the company millions. When mistakes are detected it is typically the IT department that is assumed guilty till proven innocent when most of the time it is the fault of incompetent managers or undertrained staff, and when you have fixed the problem you rarely get an apology or even a thankyou.
And training? What's that? A broken promise that's what.
Sure, I get paid more than the factory workers, but there are easier jobs out there, with higher pay, less pressure, more job security, where your work is appreciated and valued, and where you aren't blamed for the mistakes of others.
Personally I wouldn't recommend a job in IT to young people. Try engineering or something instead.
