    It is known for it's easy installation system. The grandparent probably installed with only the first cd, which while it will instal a decent desktop, does not provide all the packages that the 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or dvd sets will provide.

    I am a native English speaker that has had a couple of years of Spanish (and a year each of French and Latin), and I usually can puzzle out Portuguese, if I know the Spanish word. Spanish and Portuguese are remarkably similiar. They even sound similiar, but I am comparing Mexican Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. Mexican and Castillan Spanish are very different accents.

    My grandfather was a native Dutch speaker, and in talks with native Belgians and Germans, the impression I get is that Dutch and German are a bit more different.

    In geomety class, out teacher would walk around looking to see if we did our homework. To test how closely she checked, I would show my Spanish homework. I did this for over a month before one of my classmates ratted me out. Of course, she only started checking after I admitted that had not even opened the math book. I had worked out several theorems on the board that put us several chapters ahead, and the teacher was questioning me if I had read ahead. I replied something like, "You think I read ahead? I haven't even opened the book yet."

    Ha! I had a Vic20 with a tape drive.

    I also had an Apple IIe clone with dual floppy 5 1/4" drives.

    Of course my current GPU has better specs than my old notebook. Then again my zaurus almost has better specs than my notebook.

    One word Mosaic. Another name: Paul Kunz.

    The NCSA is at the University of Ill. Stanford is in the USA and was used for demonstrating the use of the Web on the Internet. The web is not much good without a web browser. And a graphical browser is necessary for mass appeal.

    Tim came up with the initial idea, but it was researchers in the US that brought it to fruition.

    Good enough? There are plenty of benchmarks that reproduce this, if you want to search for them.

    It really depends on a number of variables. Do you have ext3 for the FS? Maybe some options are slowing things down. Or maybe debug is turned on for ReiserFS. I mean if someone claims that WinXp is sluggish and we find out that it is on a Fat32 FS that has never been defragged, well...

    Err, there can be a lot of debate regarding "what if's of WWII", but the US created the Internet. The US is responsible for the WWW. Why should anyone take away our control when it was our R&D, our money that spnosored the internet in the first place?

    How much do you pay for tap water? How much does it cost for bus fare? How much does it cost to mail a letter?

    How much do you pay for cable TV? How much does your phone cost?

    See the difference between private services and government services? Why would you trust a private monopoly that has consistently screwed us?

    Well the blogger chose the wrong version. There are two, VectorLinux that can run on just 32mb ram and needs only 850mb of disk space. (Older versions were even lighter needing only 350 mb of disk space.)

    Then there is the SOHO version that needs a bit heftier requirements.

    There several Power Supplies that are generally quiet. I have an Antec true power that is quiet with a temperature controlled fan. The hardest is finding a cpu heatsink fan that is quiet.

    You forgot, install updates without connecting to the internet. You know how WinXP sp1 is compromised in 6 minutes from having a live internet connection.

    At least Mandrake has the option to install updates during the install process.

    The problem that most people see is they try running it on a system with 64mb of ram or less. Then they blame on processor speed, not realizing that if they upgraded the cpu but left the ram amounts the same, there would still be a performance problem.

    Btw, I just recently installed MDK10.1 on a similiar system but only 60mb of RAM (4 was used for onboard video). It was rather slow, but then again so wasn't win98 that it came with. It also didn't help that it had a 5 1/4" 6gb hdd.

    It is the Licence, stupid.

    Some could come along and take the BSD changes, incorporate into a closed project and then change things a little so things are not compatible the open project.

    Sure noone would ever do that. Kerberos

    At least with linux and other GPL stuff noonecan close off any changes.

    There is a lot of evidence pointing to repression causing all sorts of problems. So it could be seen that the Puritanism of the US is the root of its problems.

    Personallyl, I think it is just factor. Parents not eating dinner with thier kids is another one. This is not saying just sitting down to gether is enough, but rather the whole concept of embracing a time to gather and discuss on a regular basis.

    So we are to follow Microsoft's tradition and call it Web Browser?

    So what exactly is wrong with saying that this unpublished study contradicts observed reality. Windows/IIS have more comprimised servers than Linux/Apache even though Linux/Apache has a higher market share. That seems to be a direct contradiction than what this "study's" claims.

    Oh, wait a minute, this study was using hypothetical examples and using statistical data. Hrmm, you know what they say about statistics and data.

    And you are not a realist, you are a closet MS apologist. MS is not a normal company. They have been convicted of crimes. If you lived in the late 1700's you would probably have been a British sympathizer.

    Free Software is usuable right now. There might be some pain in coverting, but guess what? Business complain about anything that costs money and may not be as usuable right away. Fuel efficeint engines may cost more initially and not provide as much horsepower. Bet you prefer a fuel efficient engine as gas prices continue to rise. Free Software may provide immediatebenefits but it really is about your long term benefits and rights.

    We are not talking transfer of accounts. We are talking transfer of the Game. This is defined in the Eula as everything in the box and the box (paraphrasing mine). So this does include the Authorization key. Besides what is the point of transfering ownership of the game if the recipient cannot play?

    The relevant section is below:

    You may permanently transfer ownership of the Game and all parts thereof, and all of your rights and obligations under the License Agreement, to another by physically transferring the CD-ROM, all original packaging, and all Manuals or other documentation associated with the Game, and by removing from all of your home or personal computers and destroying any remaining materials concerning the Game in your possession or control, provided the recipient agrees to the terms of this License Agreement. The transferor (i.e., you), and not the Licensor, agrees to be solely responsible for any taxes, fees, charges, duties, withholdings, assessments, and the like, together with any interest, penalties, and additions imposed in connection with such transfer.
