Agreed! How would open source developers feel if the hardware manufacturers just provided a Wiki? It seems many OSS projects decide not to invest the time into making smart, well-written documentation. The "easy" -- and lazy -- answer is to install a Wiki and think that will suffice.

  9. Hardware Lock-in on Dvorak Says Apple Move to Intel Will Harm Linux · · Score: 1

Until OSS developers can purchase Apple clones, being locked into one vendor's hardware is nearly as reprehensible as being a locked into one vendor's software. Lets face the facts: Apple hardware is overpriced. Paying a premium for the Apple experience may appeal to some. But it will never capture programmer mindshare even when based on an Intel CPU.

I can't agree less. The current administration has done a nearly flawless job so far.

Bush administration officials ARE responsible for the objectionable actions at Abu Gharib and ARE taking action against those that committed them. That's what being responsible means. Compare that to the previous administration that dodged most responsibility and lied to cover it up.

Don't poor-mouth the intellectual agenda. It is brilliant and is working.

The comment on Ashcroft is out-of-place in an otherwise blunt article. That snipe and the cocky back-patting smack of elitism.

I support the Patriot Act because it works. Furthermore, nobody has shown that it has been abused since it became law. Tanenbaum needs to be a little more levelheaded about American laws.

  15. Slashdot Wrong About Politics on Slashdot in Politics? · · Score: 1

I, for one, do *not* want to see Slashdot try to leverage its popularity for political benefit!

Back in October or so of last year I filtered out a Slashdot moderator because of his comments endorsing "Al-pha" Gore. He said Bush was wrong for America. I hope Bush's right-headed thinking and leadership have won him over.

I stopped reading the site. And for many months after the election I did not visit the site. I was sickened by the fact that a moderator on a geek site was promoting a ineffective bozo like Gore.

Hmm. A snapshot of the DRI stuff is part of XFree86 4.1.0. You think DRI support would be built-in. I did notice that the nVidia driver does not support DRI. Perhaps that has something to do with Redhat's decision. *shrug*

  17. Abuser! Ack! on 2600 Staffer Arrested During Republican Convention · · Score: 1

An abuser indeed! Don't tell Slashdot is a lapdog for the Democratic party, too. Gore is toxic to America. I thought the media would show how brain-dead the vice president and his wife are; hello, PMRC?! My vote this year is a vote AGAINST GORE. It is so much sweeter that the other candidate is a Bush. 18. Not a Technophobe! on Ray Bradbury Recovering from a Stroke · · Score: 1

Bradbury is far from being a luddite or technophobe. In the notes found in one of his books he mentions his struggles with a kludgy word processor. Perhaps his statements about computers stem from these painful experiences. I feel his pain.

Once you grow past your techno-centric world view, you will realize there are other things worthy of attention. Bradbury writes about many of them artfully.

  19. Unintelligent and Boring on Forum:Blair Witch Project · · Score: 1

The only people with small brains are the people who thought this was an entertaining movie. Someone standing in the woods and shouting, "F*ck! F*ck!" is not my idea of a cerebral film. The lack of intelligence, in fact, serves to make it barely more interesting than that home movie of your grandmother's retirement party.. and just about as scary. Puhlease. This film never really goes anywhere. The ending is a relief. It can't forget about the Blair Witch disappointment fast enough.

  25. Tormented Teens Who Happen to be Internet Enabled on The Public & The Internet: Open Forum · · Score: 1

Did anybody see the abc tv coverage of this tradegy last night? I did. I cringed. The news reporter just didn't get it. He affixed blame to video games, the Internet, Marilyn Manson and a "goth" lifestyle. He failed to recognize that today's disaffected goth is quite similiar to the switch-blade wielding hood of his era -- similiar, that is, in feelings of alienation and torment.

If there is a possibility for a cure for these massacres, then it is that people -- both teens and their parents -- must learn to not be so cruel to each other. Yes, it seems adults encourage the cruel behavior that particularly harms melodramatic youth.

A religious "grounding" helps. It helps judge and quickly eliminate thoughts of such godless acts as we saw in Littelon. Bashing religion -- and the religious right -- is bound to eventually contribute to something like this.

There is no magic pill to wake us up from this nightmare. Bashing the internet + rock music + video games + dark clothing has never worked. Society should do more soul-searching instead. Changing attitudes and broken moral values is more intelligent than pulling the plug on the PC and taking a censoring view of entertainment.
