Kids don't grow up to become prostitute-murdering psychopaths because they played a videogame that "taught them it was cool." Give children a little bit of credit here.
Good strawman, way to knock it down.
Genius boy: we're talking about heightened agression, desensitization, and empathetic detatchment. All of these have been observerd in children that play violent video games. Is it really necessary to teach children to be more cynical?
I think this goes beyond simple morality as you've rallied about.
There absolutely are moral regulations that are necessary. Laws that prevent murder legislate morality. Would you want to ban those? Laws banning lewd acts with siblings and offspring are perfectly valid moral laws that have sound logic behind them. Do you wish to overturn these in your quest to get the "man" off your back?
Start drawing some lines about what you personally consider morally reprehensible and tell me you think it should be a free-for-all society. Now consider when we have to start drawing lines.
As opposed to someone who calls Planned Parenthood staff "evildoers"? You betcherass. Funny, that quote is pretty much the mantra of every conservative.
but GTA is pretty fvcking twisted for a 18 y.o. to be playing... sorry, but it really, really is morally vapid. game or no game, there's no need to plant those seeds.
I'm pretty far from being a Trekker, but this sounds like a great premise. I'm all about backfilling legend (well, except for "Smallville"). And with Shatner at the helm, I'd definitely give up an hour a week for it.
3 Make sure you enjoy what you plan on doing for the rest of your life
Months later I saw him on a panel hosted by Bill Maher with Craig Barret, Pen and Teller, and Peggy Noonan (i think). He was complaining about internet porn affecting people's lives. People laughed, but he was totally serious.
Fascinating man. Even in my late 20's I enjoyed his show on tape as a way to decompress after a long day workin on my PHD
Does anyone else think of that "Tales from the Darkside" Episode, from circa 1984?
The main character has a fvcked up family, and he inherits a machine from his recently decesased brother in law. The machine is an old 80-col green-phosphor word processor in a wooden chassis.
Whatever he types on the machine comes true.
He eventually re-writes his life just as the machine goes up in flames.
I always wanted to build a wooden chassis after seeing this (in like 1984).
Windows because Apple, like all the other UNIX vendors, ships their systems in a (reasonably) secure state by default.
Really?
I just installed XP Pro and ActiveX was off by default and the firewall was turned on by default. And it yelled at me for not having AV software installed. (F-prot all the way!)

I agree: I work in a semiconductor cube farm. Every office has a flourescent light fixture (ceiling mounted) and a PC: almost 1:1.
According to their logic an flour. tube uses the same power as a PC.
'Block' is also used as a linear distance in simple city planning: there are.8 miles per block, referring to the distance from one street on the grid to another. Or, what is the Manhattan Distance in 'blocks' from point A to point B if you are walking from one corner of a 'block' to another? The distance is 'two blocks'.
...So that every non geek in my neighborhood can log onto my machine and suck my bandwidth dry? Not a chance!
There aren't enough geeks per cubic block to do this communally. It would probably require public donations (or public tax dollars) as a non-profit neighborhood improvement activity.
It is very hard to leave after 5 years in the industry. By that point you're in your late 20's (assumption), and you've started to settle a bit. Jumping out of a high-paying job to go back to school is a very difficult choice to make once you've left school.
First an irate and bogus article referring to "Communist San Fransisco", and now jokes from 5 years ago!
Waaazzzzzzzuuuuuuupppppppp Taco!!!!!!!!!!!
... is making semiconductors???
Oh, plasMONICS... my bad...
(I know, I know: she's deceased)
...ok, who gave Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter a /. account? Taco? Neil? Fess up!
Is it me, or does O'Reilly poop out a mediocre book anytime something registers on the "coolness" scale?
Maybe its me.

Didn't think so.

Uh, can you point to a book that rewards the reader for killing a hooker?
Didn't think so.
Don't mix up your media: video games are NOT books.
Maybe George Bataille wrote some twisted stuff, but it doesn't compare to the passive, mindless stimulation that video games satisfy.

sorry, there was a less-than sign, but it got stripped out as html... i meant SUB-18yo.

This OBVIOUSLY points to the fact that the dinosaurs really did die off 5000 years ago!
That's awesome! I wasn't there though, :(, I watched it on CSPAN that weekend and enjoyed it. They cut the hand shaking.
was it an old guy in lab goggles with a vyn dyke and pattern baldness?
voiceover by a woman.
occaisional monologues by a short man with an austrian accent and big glasses?
i know the show, it still on PBS, something about chemistry...

Bill spoke at my Alma Mater (RPI) years ago.
He said to remember three things if anything:
1 Use the metric system
2 Never write a memo longer than 1 page
3 Make sure you enjoy what you plan on doing for the rest of your life
