    Yes, those "old" PCs will run Linux just fine. No need to throw them out.

    I'm writing this on my newest PC, 7 years old. Runs Ubuntu MATE and Mint Cinnamon.

    Worse, the US Air Force's "golden handcuffs". I don't see a lot of solar energy engineering opportunities here, either. Most of the engineering already has been done, with incremental improvements to come. The real problem I see (in the USA) is cost due to regulatory red tape.

    Vehicle engineering is just about all metric. Electrical was never imperial. Except for "radar miles", which are 6000 feet (nautical miles), but disappearing as time goes on.

    I can sleep for 8 hours stretched out and comfortable, vs. 4 hours sardine-mode? There's no comparison.

    I've worked in the defense sector since 1968, but I would rather be designing solar equipment instead. It might be more productive to reduce our reliance on war by being energy independent. A few of those millions of defense workers could do it.

    Hint: there are free OSes out there that stay current, are safer, and will run your "old" machine for years to come. Try one.

    The problem we had was getting pinch rollers that hadn't turned into the goo that old plastic foam does. We finally found a junk collector who had one, burned all our tapes onto hard drives, and chucked the big HP tape transport into the dumpster with a satisfying THUD.

    Me too, but that was 1970. Lately I've been to a couple campuses, and .... holy cow. Things have changed. Don't 'Muricans study EE any more, or are they all Women's Studies and Basket Weaving?

    Carry 2 flash drives. One has all the data you need for the meeting, the other is a Linux distro you boot the borrowed PC off of.

    Driving to Toronto or Montreal is popular in central NY, where fares from Syracuse to anywhere are ridiculous.
    Or, go to Ottawa and see a national capitol that's clean. But the flights out are limited.
