the "piece of journalism" you link to is a unatributed editorial from the columbian civil war "special report" section of the washington post (registration required AND a @#^@ pop-up ad which in itself qualifies them as satans brood) if all i read was unatributed editorials from european papers i might believe that the united states was a facist dominionist christian theocracy with NBC WMD on a global crusade against humanity and all kinds of weird sh*t:P
"(Yes, we supported him during the Iran-Iraq war, just enough to keep Iraq from losing but not enough to win. Nearly all his weaponry has always been from France and Russia though. I assume no one is foolish enough to think that an Iranian victory would have been a good thing?) " you are pretty glib in glossing over USA's support of a war that cost the lives of over a million people.
the key to being able to read old books has been down to them being copied over time (we hope faithfully) and being able to translate them (we hope correctly).that is the same challenge for the electronic route, making good and consistant backups of old data and "translating" old formats before they are completely obselete.
maybe:) but if anyone was a visionary in the 50's imho it was Dick.for all the bright utopia's we were promised both in sci-fi and reality philip k. dick's visions of the future are chillingly close. good sci-fi can take philosophical ideas to their extreme,to iluminate, and sometimes show the glaring weaknesses of those ideas. for me some of philip dicks more interesting works where those dealing with mental illness and physical handicaps and challenging common perception thereof.
and all his interesting thoughts sold for pennies and published in trashy publications with covers of busty maidens being pawed by evil aliens
there seems to be alot of flack hitting the open source world lately, what with the hack attempt on the kernel, the legal battles and the increase in FUD. could it be a concerted effort or is it coincidence?
there is/was a small scandal brewing in holland over the use of phone tap systems made by the israeli company comverse infosys, the claims are that its suspicious that nobody but the israeli technicians are allowed to repair/service these machines, and that its posible foreign governments have access to the wiretaps.
from the uav forum: In many ways, the current American UAV industry resembles the fledgling aircraft industry of 1920's America--a large number of small, independent, recently formed companies, each vying for a share in a dawning, potentially lucrative market. Now, just as then, government support will be crucial to ensuring America's UAV industry not just survives into, but fluorishes during the coming century.
i doubt there are many organisations capable of stealing a prototype of this sort (and weight) in one of the most security consious nations on the planet..anyone want to hazard a guess?
i think some of the peoples of many of the countries in south-america might have different memories of that isolationism. The usa might not have been a dominant global superpower at the time but it had its sphere of influence.
maybe the usa should stop installing them? or supporting them if it fits the latest agenda. its a war on communism!oh no sorry my mistake, its the war on drugs,or was it the war on terrorism?
i REALLY wanted out of microsoft. i have tried switching from win2k to linux and found it confusing, xxx tools for the same job and for me a confusing file layout. installing Freebsd was/is a breeze even for a mouse clickin fool like me,i downloaded a couple of floppies, set up my nic and pointed it at a ftp site. the file layout was explained well and seemed logical to me.. The manual is good.the package system with its dependancy checking is lovely. it has linux binary compatibility there is ALOT less random noise on freebsd mailing lists and forums in my (limited) view. to sum up i found it easier to use/install than mandrake or redhat
wooooot my first chance at being a spelling/grammar nazi in a obscure language so to hell with karma! this sentance might look dutch to the casual observer but its structure is wrong and "u" is used to adress ones elders, "je" or "jullie" (plural) would have been more usual here. my guess its a poor online translation from english
now if only i could remember how to translate solar powered overlords to dutch:P
you are not paranoid! you are isreali, you have DO have enemies.
i'm not too worried about the chinese government attacking "us",as a certain superpower demonstrated recently,if you want to wage a war against the wishes of the UN and in contravention of international law you just do it. people will whine but in the long run might=right
yes WHY?? am i the only one thats wondering WHY we have to torture maim and inprison fellow beings? immortality? we do enough damage in the short lives we already have. I don't see much point in longer lives untill we have grown enough to do positive things with that time.
as i was clicking on the article link i was thinking to myself i hope nobody mentions USENET or IRC..the last thing we need is more ppl aware of the "old" internet..
RIAA lawyers/members of congress: USENET is a very slow chat program and NOT a file transfer protocol!
When europe finally gets round to deciding which side its on either america will be bankrupted or we will be in WW3 on opposite sides. Thats if you havent attacked us first over the last of the oil and to avoid payment of debt.
And here i was thinking American military might is the ONLY thing in the world supporting the tyrants. Maybe you could ask the rest of the world how they feel about that might and its use. Or even beter, read up on the modern history of "the land of the free" as i neither have the time nor the energy to go over the catalog of abuse, torture, murder and coup's that where financed and or planned and executed by the USA
i live quite comfortably thankyouverymuch. Holland is clean, has good public services, ppl dont carry guns, and there are no children on deathrow here.... from my viewpoint even so called liberal American politicians only seem to fall slightly to the left of Atilla the Hun... Why so many Americans seem to believe that others would want to follow their example escapes me.. and if i would want to be childish about it,i believe America has a national debt (ok, so we could argue about that),so i could say... We Europeans ownz you foolz:P over and out..
