"Death" was one long flashback with no new scenes, edited together from the preceding 26 episodes, and "Rebirth" was short and unfinished--and reproduced at the beginning of "End of Evangelion."
There are "director's cut" (note: spoilers in link) versions of the last few episodes which have added scenes. You can find some of these scenes in Death and Rebirth during the whole flashback, but not all. They were never in the original broadcast, and they add a little insight into some characters. There are no legal R1 copies of the director's cut version. If you read this thread on the Animeondvd.com forums, you can find out about more scenes that are only in the director's cut version, what added scenes are in the movie D&R, and why R1 will probably never get them on a DVD.

Like the others have said, 8 DVDs total for the TV series released by ADV. At least 2 DVDs for the two movies (Death and Rebirth, End of Evangelion) which are suppose to be released this year by Manga. The movies have been delayed quite a while now. BTW, many proclaim the movie as the true ending versus the last 2 episodes of the TV show. Others proclaim the movies as alternative endings. And even some others claim that both are happening except each is told from a different perspective.

The boxset is cheaper and has the "remastered" volume 1 (no overlays among other things). Reviews and whatnot are available on animeondvd.com. Best price is around $95 plus S&H if you can still get the preorder price. BestPrices, DVDPlanet, Amazon (if you use their Share the Love program with coupons), etc. can nail you a good deal. It's a really good value for anime DVDs considering most are around $20-$22 each via preordering and normally retail around $30. So this post isn't totally karma whoring, personally I think, Evangelion, while not necessarily the best anime, is something every anime fan has to watch just to keep up with the times. It's like not watching the Star Wars trilogy for anime fans. You don't have to agree that it's the best anime out there (rumor has it that the director also thought it was not good in the end), and I can bet that most would agree it is definitely not the most fun at times, but it's intriguing just because it has influenced the perception of anime in so many people's minds.

It also has many different playing options and some "innovations" in the fighting game category (like an AI training mode to train your own AI character to fight other people like Black and White's creatures). The PS2 Linux Kit available for preorder will basically be a desktop computer. It's already out in Japan, and you can do quite a few things with it if you are dedicated. Want to play MP3s, type up documents, use external CD burners/hard disks (via USB), use it as a NFS server/client, program games for it, or browse the web? It's pretty much all there.

As for buying a computer, the majority of people hardly upgrade anything more than RAM and maybe a hard disk, so a console could conceivably be the next wave of computers. It sure would make programming "easier" with a non-moving hardware platform much like how Apple's computers are.

Actually I think its the complete opposite. The FPS genre has become too overcrowded with too many games, and now only big name mods can make it out there. No one wants *your* version of Capture the Flag, Team Fortress, or Counterstrike, they want Threewave's, Valve's, etc. even if XYZ version has more maps, more features, and more models.

FPS games are also more bleeding edge than most other genres (compared to things like Civ III, Starcraft, Diablo II), and that requires more knowledge as time keeps going forward to make "good" mods. Making maps for Quake 1 was complicated enough, but then you move forward with shaders, a few scripting languages, and so forth, and you're cutting down on qualified people. Splitting up the community with so many choices (Quake/DOOM/RTCW/UT/Jedi Knight/Half-Life) has also fractured the mod community compared to when Quake 1 was the only game in town. And most of the true innovators are being snatched up by game companies since now there are so many FPS games that they need developers for all of them.

The reality is, for exclusives, interviews, previews, and free review copies of games, it is a circular relationship that the publishers, media, and developers need one another. It does not matter which platform of media you choose.

Furthermore, while I think that IGN does a fair job, they hype more games in their previews to appease their audience. Wreckless was hyped as a GTA3 clone repeatedly, and looking on general gaming forums or news sites outside of IGN (meaning not PS2 newsgroups and whatnot where there is a high potential of conflicting interests), many gamers agree that the game is hardly as free and open ended as GTA3. However, most projection TVs and widescreen TVs today do support HDTV.

Also note that Playstation 2 does support widescreen televisions as well as the X-Box and GameCube. Some games have anamorphic and/or widescreen specific capabilities. Gran Turismo 3, NFL 2002, Jak and Daxter, and quite a few more support widescreen displays for the PS2. Most games for the X-Box and GameCube come with some support for widescreen TVs, and as time moves forward, I believe that most game developers will support it. X-Box and GameCube do have support for specific features of the HDTV specifications, but I don't believe that HDTV itself will be taken advantage of until 2 or 3 years at the end of this console generation's lifespan.

And as for the original poster saying that the X-Box is a better DVD player than the PS2 that doesn't tell a whole lot. The cheaper $100-$150 do a better job nowadays than both. X-Box also isn't progressive (for DVD movies, not games) so it isn't that forward thinking and eliminates one of its hyped advantages, although by the time that progressive TVs (mostly just HDTVs) are standard, we might be on X-Box 2, PS3, and GameCube 2, so it might be a moot point and might have saved consumers or MS some dollars.

The one thing that I was astonished to find out was that the number one complaint regarding the PS2's official DVD remote wasn't fixed on the X-Box official remote. The power/reset button is missing and while it isn't so much a hassle, I would figure they would have addressed it since the X-Box's remote is so much more basic than the PS2's.

Up until the Internet boom, I would say that the US also had more consoles in people's homes than PCs, but that's speculation. Anwyay, while the US is pretty fanatical about the consoles, I think the Japanese are much more so. How many times have you heard about public launch parties that drew hundreds if not thousands? GT3 had kiosks stations set up in convience stores dedicated just to the game if I remember correctly. I even heard that there were live performances of the music on the launch of FFX.
