Threatening with a lawsuit without intent of actually filing said lawsuit to make someone do something is against the law. It's called 'barratry' and is similar to extortion, but without the criminal side.
Maybe now's a good time for a countersuit in the name of defamation and barratry. The Cease and Desist letter alledged(sp?) that they were infringing on the copyright. They didn't get what they want, but now they aren't gonna sue over it? Stupid corporation.
That's completely asinine. If you are running a mobo with that poor of a design, maybe you need to start spending more money on your PC parts. Most boards will let you turn off integrated components AND reclaim their reserved interupts. I'm running an older Abit with a KT133A and a built-in HighPoint 100 Raid controller. I don't need the built-in raid functions so I disabled it. I have no problems using other cards on the interrupts, as I have the ability to manually select what each IRQ and DMA is allocated to. That's a good design. It's also rock solid, only crashes when I do something retarded like boot up Win98:-0
One thing you are right about, built-in components cost a lot of money. More than just 5 or 10 dollars. Look at high end dual proc boards; many times the only difference between them is a nice builting SCSI raid card and $100.
USB doesn't suck, it's more flexible. It just requires more software support and it seems the Linux USB support isn't quite *there* yet.
Their DSL service is pretty expensive, unless you want MSN. Of course, this is competition at work, right? They only carry two MSN packages, both slow, and both cheap. In fact, it's cheaper to get DSL *and* MSN then it is to get DSL by itself, without an ISP. I feel fucking robbed.
Service is definitely a good motivator. When you have a monopoly, they have the ability to give poor service and not care. If they seperated the cable network from the ISP like they have with DSL, you end up with more options. They have to be good providers because they know you can go somewhere else and take your money with you.
This may not really show a large reduction in prices, but I'm all for competition.
I don't write that on messages that I think deserve moderation. That's my sig. It's on all my messages. If you don't wanna see my sig, turn it off in your prefs.
My karma really is 50. If you read some of my past messages, you'll see why. I usually have something important to say.
It's not just about muscles. Dexterity is effected as much by brain development as is by muscle excersize. This isn't evolution or excersize. The brain has been trained since birth to improve and fine-tune it's sensory perceptions of the thumbs. Although this study shows that the thumb is more useful to those who grew up on video games, I personally show the other side of the coin: I didn't grow up on consoles. I grew up on computers. My 8 fingers are easily 100 times more dextrous than my thumbs. My right thumb is good at hitting the spacebar; my left being all but useless. It merely follows me around.
I've been able to type 80wpm since I was 9 and I doubt that this will change. In retrospect, my reliance on computers is a good reason why my handwriting is so illegible.
Yeah, IQ test results should always be compared in percentiles. The numbers are different for every test. I do web development and I design and build sports car parts. I do a little mechanic work in my garage, but that's only when I go out and spend all my money and really need some.
No, I'm serious. And I really am an elitist snob, a perfectionist, an intravert, as well American(good guess; I didn't presume that about you though).
My biggest problem with the average American is complacency and apathy. In this day and age(I'm only 20, btw) people are fucking ecstatic about spending their last dime on status symbols they can't afford. It's consumerism at it's worst. That is why I am such a snob. I'm 20; I own 2 cars outright. I work very hard, but I'm not a workaholic. I have a good job, and I'm surrounded by low income white trash(excuse the expression) who can't get a better job because they don't care enough to excersize their minds as much as their wallets.
Research studies have shown that it is never too late to increase your brains capacity for knowledge or learn new skills. They would all drown in their own self created pity-pools if they weren't so apathetic about their lives.
As far as Mensa goes, I took the online pretest and got 29 out of 30 in 16 minutes. After reading about Mensa, they came off even more elitist than I yet had less to back it up. That, and they seemed a little droll. The last time I took my IQ test, I scored in the top.68%:)

Admin is easy. Try laying cat5 for 8 hours. That's *real work*.
Puhlease... Mensa level IQ. That means that 1 out of 50 random citizens could beat you on the same IQ test. It's not really a very high accomplishment. How about having an IQ in the top.2%? I have a feeling that many of the people on/. are in fact in the top 2% of Americans with respect to intelligence.
Then again, you could simply disregard this post completely. I am an *elitist snob* by nature.
Moores Law doesn't apply. It is strictly based on current manufacturing capabilities. However, Moores Law is closely related to speed. I really love the Athlon XP, but from Intels viewpoint, they shot themselves in the foot. The reasoning is simple. They've been forced by competition to overhype their products. People expect everything and the kitchen sink with an intel processor. AMD has also forced their timeline, a lot; thus the 1.13Ghz recall. That wouldn't have happened had the engineering crew been at the wheel. Instead, they let some drunk Ivy punk from marketing tell the engineers when they were going to deploy new products.
Alas, competition has in the end proved to be very healthy for competition. On an aside, does anyone read SEC filings? Jerry is a really $$$-Rich-$$$ guy right now. He's been making a boatload of money for quite a few years and probably will continue with a fat check.
Dudes, Rob Malda is the granddaddy and founder of the Trolling Club. How many other trollers do you know that get to post shit and make money off it too?
Yeah, I saw that too. I don't think that the company will go for it though. Maybe it'd fix my OpenGL problems though????
At this point, I'm almost ready to install software opengl. This whole accellerated OpenGL crap isn't working out so good. Here's a question: How is it I can play quake at high res at 90+ fps yet have solidworks crash to desktop at 800x600? I got 32MB video memory. What gives?
This would be an ideal legal challenge for the FSF to undertake. Interoperability is something they've been convicted on; using their monopoly to illegally prevent and stifle competition by decreasing the competitions ability to provide interoperability. This would actually be a relatively simple legal battle, seeing as many of the facts of the case have already been established in the federal antitrust case. On top of this, another lawsuit filed by MS to stifle the competition would simply raise the eyebrows of current states who are making huge compromises with the settlement.
The only complication I can see here is the absence of Digital Rights Management, probably not present in the plugin. Not that this is a big deal, but it might mean something to Microsoft. And I agree, Real sucks fatty.
This is a good thing here. It allows Linux users to more fully collaberate with business users and will probably help make some headway into the desktop arena. That is what we want, isn't it?
Once video codecs become a commodity item, the user begins to ignore them and decides which player to use based on quality. If this plugin can provide the features we all want along with the stability we're all accustomed to, the shores of Microsoft just eroded that minute bit more.
Now, if I could just get both SolidWorks and Autocad in linux...
Not exactly. Although I can't figure out why they need 500,000 to count the heads of 325 million people. Each one is good for only 625 heads? Maybe they will be sparsley used in rural towns, but I could see a single bean counter hitting the houses of 2000+ people in a weeks time in a metropolitan setting. I think 500,000 is a little overboard.
And what about this: Where do all 500,000 go when they are done with the census? Do they keep them for the next census, or flood the market with 2 week old handhelds?
Absolutely, I know a few marketers and they spend about 12 hours a day on the phone. That's all they do. But, thats just the Market Path. That's just buisiness. You should check out the process of Pre Scheduling and Real Time Scheduling. Most of this is coordinated over the internet with little use of the telephone for many places.
Because of FERC 888 and 889, now when you transfer power openly across multiple Transmission providers, you must let them all either Passively or Actively accept the transfer. Most of this requires little human interaction and the ETags do most of the coordination(on the internet).
And Yahoo Messenger? I believe you. That's got to be a really smooth way to make a deal; if you type fast enough:)

Seems appropriate with their Linux Clustering tech...
