Back in my day, my teachers actually LOOKED over our code. Wont This just make it more convienent for teachers to ruberstamp grades and not bother to check and make sure that you code is elegant and not spaghetti crap?
I agree. Many companies have patented every crazy idea under the sun with no intention of actually creating the product but waiting until someone makes it later and then they sue them.
What is needed is some kind of time limit penilty patent that will penalyze(fine and/or void the patent) people who patent an idea but does not create or use the patented idea after a period of time.
The only bad thing about Morpheus is the constant popup ads every 5 seconds. I can't really complain since the service IS FREE, but why did it have to be POPUPS?!?! Anyway, Popup killer is good to stop it but it is still annoying. Also I have noticed that the system hicups every few minutes. I think it has something to do with the ads updating but I am not sure. Anyone know?
I know you were kidding but that is actually not a bad idea. I would love to see some cartoons that show the OTHER side of the story(artist not getting paid by the RIAA, RIAA paying off congressment to pass stupid laws, FBI arresting 12 year old kids and calling them terrorist because they tried to access someones computer..etc..etc.)
Although I agree buffy is good, I can't help
but feel that the show is showing its age. things that looked cute when she was playing a High School student looks kinda lame now that she
is in college. Not to mention that they have
done every conceivible thing they can possible
do to her and her crew. I hope that when they
go to upn, they will give her new and better
material.
A while back on a similiar article someone had a good(Total Fantasy Unfortunetely since no congressman would ever Implement this *:(* ) Idea. On the tax form their should be a pie chart where people could decide how much of THEIR tax money should go into what program THEY WANT. (example. Say I want 15% of my taxes going to Nasa, 25% on education, 15% on military, 5% on congress, 30% on city construction, and 10% on police). This would be the ultimate DEMOCRATIC VOICE on where our money should be spent.
If they implement this(tags). I wonder how long before they invent something so the FBI/Police can scan people(it said the chip transmits 12 inches so they have to be fairly close) and items to see if you are carrying any ILLEGAL drug money? This isn't paranoia or a conspiracy theory this is just the next logical step they(the gov) would take. Its already legal for the police to take money found on someone for PROBABLE CAUSE(A loop hole for the pigs..uh..police to steal..uh..confiscate your money even if they don't have a SHREAD of REAL evidence against you). I wonder how long before we have the technology(when it improves enough) implemented with speed scanners in cop cars(cop:"sir, you were scanned with a thousand dollars on you, I have to confiscate this money since the only reason you would have this much is because you were going to use it for drugs." *takes money* "Have a nice day." *whistles while walking away*)? Ok, maybe I am a LITTLE paranoid, but can anyone say with confidence that this can not happen?

Just wondering, I know companies test and make sure that their plants are safe(I hope anyway) and that if a genetically engeneered plant did MATE with a normal plant their should be no real danger. However, what if too seperate types of genetically engeneered crop MATED? Example: A Lot of companies are really into genetically engineered corn. What if company A. was creating a breed of corn that was creating calcium and other vitamins that doesn't happen naturally, While company B. was creating a Genetically Engineered breed of corn that creates a natural insecticide and repels insects. If theese two different types of genes mated somehow (seeds fall off from trucks, carried by birds, etc) wouldn't this increase the chance for a HARMFULL and possibly dangerous mutation?
you say write your congressmen but I say why bother. The congressmen goes with the majority poll(or just plain bought out) and most people could care less about this stuff. I have read several posts from people who have said that they have contacted or written their congressman in other instances. How many of you have kept up to see if your congressmen has done what he said he would do? Did he lie? Is anybody really surprised?
I have a feeling that this rental car company will not keep the speeding policy long. Why? you might ask. Simple, a FAIR amount of people SPEED. People WANT to get home, or to work, or wherever as fast as they can. Not stay in trafic all day. As soon as people start getting fined for speeding from a car rental company they will stop using it(or sue them like this guy did) and go to a rental place that doesn't have this policy. ACME will start loosing customers and money so they will either have to give up the policy or keep losing money.
I can't see this being used for individual sheets for a while, since you probably cannot bend them. The most practical use would be Electronic Books filled with electonic paper. That would be great for book readers like me who like to download books, pictures, maps, etc but hate to read them on a LCD screen. This is very promising.
The original intention of patents WAS a good idea at the time. However, with time, money, and corporate coruption the patent system has been perverted from a system of protecting small buisness ideas to a wepon for monopolies. What I suggest is that we go back to the original idea with a few improvements.
1. Reduce patents to no more than a 7 year life. That should allow a company time to make enough money to get its feet off the ground and to promote inovation instead of living off one idea for the rest of their lives.
2. Make it so that you have to have a WORKING prototype of your idea. The patent office used to have this until they started patenting buisness practices. This would filter out a lot of useless patents that don't do anything but takeup the patent office time.
3. The patented item HAS to be in work/use during the time of the patent. If the item is not in use between six months to a year during the seven years then the patent should go void.
This would get rid of a lot of patent squaters who make something for a short amount of time but refuse to release the item again even with high public demand.
4. Have a punishment system that fines someone who patents items that are already patented or is VERY obvious. This would FORCE patenters to actually look to see if its a new idea and that they don't patent something stupid like the growth process of grass.
5. Have a reward system for people who find priar art. This is already done on another site but I think the patent office should have this and NOT CHARGE PEOPLE!
6. Have a time limit on patent infringement claims. There are companies who patent an item and let another company sell an item for YEARS before they sue them(they wait until the company is worth millions). If An item is obviously popular and is infringing on someones patent they should have no more than two to three years(from the day the infringing item is released) to sue that person or it becomes fair game.
Theese seem a lot more practical in my mind than what we have now.
Question: How many laws have been created
for the little guy but has been corrupted
and bought out so only big corporations may
benefit from them?
Answer: ALL OF THEM
What if games like QUAKE,DOOM,etc.. Had not
Existed? Would Harris and Klebold had been
picked on Any less in school? Would
they have hated their classmates any less?
Do you think that their parents and teachers
would have payed more attention to what they were
doing? Do you HONESTLY believe that
the COLOMBINE shooting wouldn't have happened
anyway?
Ok. If you are so EAGER to give up privacy,
then show us a token of your faith. Answer these
questions:
Who are you?
Who are your parents?
Ever been in jail?
Have you ever taken drugs?
How about a speeding ticket?
What is your social Security Number?
Who are your friends?
What is your Credit Card Number?
Have any kids?
What are their names?
How old are you?
Have any medical problems?
Got any sexually transmitted deseases?
Are you gay?
How much money do you make?
What are your political views?
Who did you vote for?
(etc,etc,etc)
While I am at it. Why don't we stick a camera
in your house to make sure you are not committing
any crimes. After all, You said cameras would be
everywhere. Why not get a headstart on the
competition.:)
Your argument for questions:
1. Britain does not count. It was already
fairly peacfull to begin with. Anyway, Overall
VIOLENT crimes have been decreasing for a while.
2. Politicians have been doing it for YEARS.
I seriously doubt that honesty will suddenly
emerge from people.
3. I don't know about you but I already have a
pretty good idea of human nature and it isn't
pretty.
Anyway, you should read 1984 by George Orwell.
His version of an open society seems more
likely than your semiutopian future you bring up.
I don't like cameras but I prefer them to a bunch of neanderthal ex-high school bullies with guns cruising around looking for somewhere to throw their weight around.
Who says the police would leave after the cameras
were installed or that they would leave you alone?
Remember, the ones who would be watching through
the cameras are police too and do you think they
will raise one finger to stop police harasement
or turn in one of their FELLLOW OFFICERS? Who are
you going to complain too? The police? your
government? The media? Unless they do something
stupid like beat the shit out of you in front of
a camera it will still be their word against yours even with the film. Its all a matter of
interpatation. you screem harassment and they
will just say you were acting suspicious. Anyway,
that's just my thoughts on the subject.
The only good thing that came out of all this is that (some)schools have started a ZERO tolerence to bullying. Where before teachers would allow kids to pick/tease/humiliate other students and not lift a finger to stop it. Now they are required to stop it and send the offender(s) directly to the principle for dentention. Although they are doing this for the wrong reasons(afraid the student(s) will come back later with a shotgun and blow their asses away) instead of any moral obligations. It may not be much but you have to take what you can get.
I have been slammed a LOT before I found out what to do. A while back I kept getting calls from one phone company or another trying to get me to go with them. I kept telling them that I WAS NOT INTERESTED but they kept calling and calling and calling. It got so bad that they would call me once in the morning, Once in the afternoon and once at night everynight for WEEKS! I told them to stop calling me but they would not LISTEN. I was at my whits end when I just happened to tell a friend one day about it and he told me that my name was on a special call list that companies sell to each other(or keep if I ever used them) and that I had to tell them that I WANT to be removed from that list. I was a little skeptical about that because I have told the phone company not to call me but he said that unless I TELL THEM to REMOVE my name from THAT LIST it will just be passed from one worker to another. So when I got the call the next time, I told them that I wasn't interested and I wished to be removed from the calling list. They said fine and just asked if I was sure about it and I said yes. After that they stopped calling. I still get hasled once a year(they renew the list every year) but I just tell them to remove my name from the list and thats that.
I am not an expert on patent law and my knowledge of it is sketchy but didn't the original patent law of 1940's work fine. Didn't it basically say
that you kneeded(A. a physical working prototype) and that it would be void after a short time(I think 7 years was average). Since then technilogigal prosperity and inovation has soared. Now since the new patent law allows for people to patent IDEAS and gives that patent 100+ years of life(thanks DISNEY!:( ) Now people just patent anything they can think of and sit on their buts and wait till someone makes the divise they patented and then sues them for infringment. This is actually becomming an epidemic if you look the trend thats forming. I used to only hear about this about once every two weeks. Now I hear about it everytime I turn on the T.V. This scares me because I fear that one day innovation and motivation will stop because everybody will say "Why Bother to make something new...Its already been patented".
IT does everything kaZaa does.
Even offtopic posts can be interesting. If enough people find it interesting shouldn't THE COMMUNITY decide? When did slashdot become a dictatorship?
