I've used a smaller tablet for about 7 years now. Can't remember which one I had at first, but it's what got me hooked - now I've got a Wacom Intuos 2 6x8 I've had for about 5 years.

I spend most of the day surfing, writing, and doing web dev. I switch between Textpad, browsers, FTP, and Photoshop throughout the day without switching my input device. The tablets just take some time to get used to.

Starcraft works great with it, but for all other games I pull down my Logitech wireless Mouseman, which has been fine. If I need a backup mouse, the Wacom came with a mouse that only works on the tablet. There have only been a few rough days over those years where I had a little hand crampage.

If you're a designer you'll want more precision, so go for something larger than the 6x8 tablet.

I can't imagine doing all my work, let alone Photoshop, with a mouse anymore. Well, sometimes I have to put up with it if I go on-site to a client's office. But that's life.

Microsoft still supports it - at least right now - and I haven't found software yet I couldn't install on it. Perhaps at some point I'll finally make the switch... to Gentoo or some shit. As long as I can still web dev on it, and run Starcraft and MAME, I'm a happy man.

I'll probably run 2000 Server here on my desktop until the Internet literally won't let me and sends a feedback pulse through my cable modem which blows up my monitor in my face.

On the other hand - one series that I'm missing is Max Headroom, it's dark, it's about a near future and it's all about money, media companies, viewer figures and shady affairs. (Sounds familiar?) Matt Frewer is wasting away over on Eureka, which should have a new season coming soon.

Not to dis' Eureka, which is entertaining in its own way - but Frewer is pretty brilliant, and shouldn't be stuck playing a psychotic Australian dogcatcher.

ALL they had to do was replace the theme song. That's it. It was like a moldy booger smeared onto the beginning of the show. I had to leave the room when it came on.

The rest of the show was great, but tainted by the intro, every god damn time.

Sorry, but it was actually "The Day Before" (which I believe was the episode right after the hiatus) that opened the series up for me. I liked the first few episodes, and yeah I got tired of the love triangles (although that kind of shit happens in a small town, so it can't be avoided) - but that episode, to me, is when the series took off.

The recent lead up to war with the neighboring town was really well done, and I'm really disappointed they decided to throw it all in the garbage. Very glad there's such a big fan base.

Besides, Skeet Ulrich really really needs a career. I think.

If Al Gore had invented the Internets as a bunch of dump trucks, it would be much easier to implement a tollbooth system. With all the maintenance it takes to clear up the tube system, it makes the true cost more abstract and difficult to quantify.

However, look at it this way - it will help create more government Internets jobs. Emails have to be cleaned because video packets leave color smudges on the envelopes; so many germs are passed on online money transactions and those UV cleaners have to be maintained; phishing sites are constantly scanned by Fish and Wildlife; and pr0n doesn't create itself.

This could be a good thing in the long run.

  20. Re:Hype and more hype on Web 2.0 Distracts from Good Design · · Score: 1

I used to hang on every word on usability Jakob uttered, but I'm having a little disconnect here.

First, I think everyone has a different idea of what "Web 2.0" actually is, as evidenced by previous /. discussions on the topic. Is it RSS? Is it Google Ads? Is it AJAX? Is it all the new Javascript frameworks and slicker client-side interfaces? Sometimes I think the baseline of Web 2.0 is just using XHTML/CSS and finally getting away from trans HTML.

Secondly, every time a new technology framework makes SOMETHING easier, SOMEONE will be there, waiting, to abuse it. Jakob knows this, and I think that's what he's calling interface designers out on. Honestly, when I go to a site with tons of intricate interfaces for tagging, RSS, Trackback, etc., it does make my eyes glaze over - so I'm with Jakob there. But he also tends to be a stick-in-the-mud and denounces just about every new tech wave that floats across the web. He's like the crazy evangelical Christian that always preaches chastity and purity, even though he knows everyone's going to go ahead and sin anyway, just so his voice is heard. He always provides good anchor reference points when discussing usability - but he's still an anchor, and anchors are a drag.

  21. Re:yeah yeah yeah on PHP 5.2.2 and 4.4.7 Released · · Score: 1

I would LOVE to switch to PHP 5. But the truth is, I work for a variety of small companies that all want the cheapest hosting option I can find, and I can't always rely on PHP 5 being available, so most everything I build is in PHP 4. I'd much rather use some real OOP, but PHP 4's class framework works just fine for most of the projects I'm on.

It has been discussed before that many of the larger hosts (GoDaddy, et al) run simple RedHat installations with specific packages of Apache, PHP and MySQL that they've tested for stability, and they're very hesitant to upgrade. Of course, with any kind of virtual/dedicated server package I could jump in with my own upgrades, but I'm not a Linux wiz and it makes for smoother launches if I don't have to upgrade everything. Maybe that could be viewed as laziness on my part, but the truth is there's no need to make a project more complex than it has to be, especially when dealing with smaller companies on a hard budget. It also keeps your dev environment config simpler if you're not dealing in both 4 and 5.
