Dealing with Sarbox, you'll get a good real-world understanding of security. Though not glamorous, the experience identifying security opportunities and proposing changes will be invaluable later.

Though 2004 is the first year many companies will have to certify for Sarbox, the work for international compliance is still going strong. Look outside North America, you'll get international exposure and security experience.

as the CFO of my company put it, china needs to wake up if they want to play with the big boys in the global economy.

The US needs to wake up. China can do whatever it wants. All large companies (and thus US trade policy) will bend to China's every will because they can not survive without China's market.

China does not want to depend on any foreign nation for anything. By developing their own technologies, they are creating jobs for China's population which encourages them to get a better education. Not having to depend on anyone will allow them to pass the US in terms of economic power.

EVD is just a step in that process. To us, it will mean a cheaper media type that will most likely be better than DVD. Hollywood may not catch on, but for home use and personal recording EVD will most likely be a hit because it will be cheaper than DVD. As far as buying extra equipment, I can't imagine China would not build in DVD compatibility with their players/recorders.

America wants it cheap and China gives it to us.

My wife and I went to a nutritionist this year and it was probably the best thing we could have done for our health.

Before our appointment, the nutritionist had us get a blood test. At the appointment (which lasted 3 hrs) we went over the results and developed a diet taylored to our blood type. What we ended up with was two diets that were very different.

Basically, my blood type (O) needs A LOT more protein than other blood types. Thus, Atkins is great for me but not so great for my wife (who is not O). At the same time, sugars and other carbs are bad for both us.

The bottom line is, see an expert. In my case, a nutritionist was the best bet. Nutritionists are not doctors so keep that in mind.

So, unless you are using encryption on your imap/pop/smtp server the Blackberry is far more secure.

In your case, you would also not be able to remotely lock or erase the device if it were lost which is a really nice thing to have. I wouldn't want to be the one to tell my boss that I couldn't keep company info secure because I couldn't lock the device from my desk.

Mitnick's book is awesome and should be required reading for anyone who has to answer a phone (hmm..EVERYONE?!). Have you ever held the a door open for someone without asking for their ID if it was required? Ever walked AWAY from a security door while it was still open?

  9. Re:Highlights issues w/ US ISPs on Rolling Out Broadband Internet, On The Cheap · · Score: 3, Insightful
$16.50 for 128kbps is VERY expensive when considered with broadband prices. US based broadband prices are significantly cheaper than this. To get 1.5 at the same scale would be $196. So your accusation of price fixing U.S. broadband doesn't hold water. Dialup is still pretty close since there is a transfer cap.

The government (especially in Illinois) really screwed SBC over. They LOSE money on every line that a third-party provider installs. SBC has to give it to them below their cost. That is why you don't see DSL getting rolled out in more areas. The phone company CAN do it but they WON'T do it. Would you do something if you knew for a fact you would lose money? The phone company still has to make money to pay all their people. I can get 1.5Mbps SDSL if they fired up the RT I'm connected to but since they haven't I'm stuck with 384/128.

Cable modems are also expensive to rollout but the cable company doesn't have to share (go figure). Your $50 a month is a drop in the bucket compared to what it costs to install the cable modem infrastructure (even when added up over a year or so).

Please, try being your own ISP before complaining when your ISP is restricting you at $50 a month.

For my business I pay $500 a month for a T1 with NO CAPS/RESTRICTIONS WHAT SO EVER. If you want the same get something similiar or get 'business' class.

Also, masters programs can be viewed as an 'easy out' to finding a job. Getting a masters right out of undergrad will not help you. The point of a masters is to build on what you've learned in your life experience.

Right out of college you have nothing to lose. Live with your parents for awhile (I did). Take your time finding a job, research companies you want to work at and talk to people who work there. Most jobs are found through someone you know.

That said...if you get two years out of a laptop battery you got a great deal.

I wouldn't recommend leaving the bay open though. I know Dell and Compaq make covers. A quick search on IBMs website didn't find any covers but I bet if you call 1-888-SHOP-IBM ext.7000 they can hook you up with one.

For all of my laptops, I made it a habit to discharge the battery to about 10% every two to three weeks and recharge it when the unit is off. If I'm not going to be using the battery I take it out and leave it in the laptop bag.

Pretty simple but tedious. At the same time, however, I have not had to purchase a replacement battery for any laptop I've ever owned.

As a side note, I gave my Thinkpad 600 to my mother about a year ago and she has never had a problem either. She still discharges the battery to 10% once a month and it is still in good condition.

I work 10-12 hours a day now and can only play for a few hours a night if at all. At least with a server like this you know you are with casual players in a more relaxed environment (or at least I think it would be).
