... is that I bought a 12" G4 notebook this year and f*ing LOVE it. Physically it's one of the nicest pieces of equipment I've ever owned. Operationally it has the best of Mac OS and a real Unix system underneath... Kind of what my Amiga 1000 was trying to be, but in a snazzy aluminum case. 80G, DVD writer, $2k. Freedom from Windows viruses and worms - priceless. Highly recommended.
Reminds me of the Gilligan's Island episode where they find berries that let you read each other's mind. The Professor says "Gee, I thought that would make people get along better." BZZZZZZT
he he, good move taking a pic of the guard. Bet he LOVED that. Even if they have some privacy policy re. the employees that disallows picture taking, there's no reason to throw somebody out. Unless of course you were that egregiously annoying in only three steps.:-)
I bought my first Mac last month, a G4 12" Powerbook and I love it. Considering I've been programming under DOS and Windows since forever, that's saying something. And hey, it's Unix underneath so there's something to play with when you get tired of the pretty icons.
Yeah, I can find you a place in a struggling old Eastern manufacturing town with built-in crack dealers and free "Cops"-style entertainment as gunfire punctuates the mid-summer air... I would've taken one myself for the easy access to smack but I heard the ho's were really all men.
What a complete waste of time and energy. Do we need to remake this kind of stuff for every new "generation"? For what, better special effects? Watch the original, in all it's glorious black and white.
A spoof of Casablanca and the other Bogart flicks, starring Humphrey Bogart, Gina Lollabridgida, Robert Morley, Pete Lorre, Janet Leigh and just about every great character actor available. Written by John Huston and Truman Capote, directed by Huston. Example from Peter Lorre:
"Time, time, what is time? Italians squander it, Swiss measure it, Americans say it is money and the Hindus say it does not exist. I say time is a crook."
Listen fool, I'm an American, and don't you say nuthin' about my momma. Read the post. I'm referring to people I work with. They're NOT being paid less. They're NOT off-shore programmers. Get a grip.
My mother is a technical recruiter with a medium size company and when I said something about H1Bs working for less money she told me that in fact many of them are very demanding, salary-wise, and basically that just wasn't true at all. Of course that's just her company.
I'm sorry, but I don't believe these numbers for an instant. Maybe 40% of the people who read Petreley, but most big companies are still solidly MS, despite the occasional win in the server room. I just did a website for my high school reunion (no, I'm not saying WHICH) and I was painfully reminded of how few people know how to do more than use email. They were trying to upload 24M picture scans of the kids fer pete's sake... Think that's a viable Linux market? BZZZZT. Linux has a much better shot at embedded and appliance-type applications.
I know there'll be a ton of OS/2 jibes here, but I was using V1.2/1.3 on an 8M 25Mhz 386 to control the scrubbers in some large power plants, and it ran 24/7 for months when Windows wouldn't run Word for a day. But for most people installation was a nightmare, and IBM expected all the printer and video companies to write drivers immediately which they didn't. V2 was also great for doing DOS development. Ah well... I might pony up for a copy of the last version just for old times sake.:-)
the people who don't give a damn about the bits being free or recognize MSFT as evil are probably not gonna be the ones who'll buy the book, so this is pretty unlikely to change any minds.
On the other hand, Wal-Mart is selling a PC with Linux for $200, showing how the most expensive part is the Windows tax. Now THAT will do a LOT of good as it'll get middle America gets comfortable with Linux.
They pretty much screwed me royally on a contract. They had no intention of completing it, they were just trolling for employees. When I wouldn't accept their job offer (at less than half of my consulting rate - a rate which THEY had offered in the first place) they dumped me with no notice. Then they proceeded to use the 10 weeks of work I did to satisfy a whole year's contract requirements to the NSA. (I started going out with a woman in the office after I left, which is how I know.) The agency I went through told me they had actually dropped them as a client because they had done the same thing to others. The people there were generally nice and there was interesting work, but the local management was pretty ruthless. YMMV
Save your money and get a Honda S2000 or similar. I've spent at least $45k on my '89 911 convertible, and it's probably only worth $29k now.
Yes, it's basically a brand-new car mechanically, and it's realllly sweet to drive and look at, but geez, $15k more for a 13 yr old car! That buys a lotta beer... And most women won't know the difference, trust me. Can you say: "Is that a Fiat?"!!!
If you do have to have the real thing get the 993 model sold between '95 and '97.

My favorite Star Trek line, while "Roc" (played by the guy who did Lurch from The Addams Family) is strangling the hell out of Capt. Kirk.
He squeezes Kirk's neck harder with each word until it looks like it's going to pop right off his neck.
It's the small things in life...
Cuz it ain't gonna stop my '68 Caddy! Of course given that it's 20 ft long, 4600lbs and has a 375 HP engine, not much would.
:-)
Now if I could just sell it for half of what I've got in it...
Admitting reading Chomsky in a public venue? I'm glad SOMEbody is still from "the home of the brave".
:-)
But I'm sure Ann Coulter is gonna GET YOU FOR THIS.

Maybe in the midwest... in the dustbowl.
I mean really, they're so effed up they need all the help they can get. They tried the Edison thing and that was so-so... what the hell.
...if you miss out on him. You also have to remember the times.
And by the way, my sig here has *always* been:
What a complete waste of time and energy. Do we need to remake this kind of stuff for every new "generation"? For what, better special effects? Watch the original, in all it's glorious black and white.
Just my $0.02....

But hell, I gotta believe my Mom.

She was in Buck Rogers, and still looks great in a flight suit:

is to not ENBUG.
Geez, sounded more like Dave Barry to me. :-)
By owning Macromedia they could kill Cold Fusion too, no?

Well honestly, I don't know who the audience is for any book from RMS other than true believers anyway.
Anyone *might* buy it, but the people shopping for $200 PCs at WalMart I think would be an unlikely audience. Is that better?

Now THAT would be a reason to support digital TV.
Ya tell, the place will just get more crowded!
