Thanks, that's great news. For some reason I thought there'd be more of an announcement, a la the intro of the model no. in the U.K., but I guess not.

Wow, I had no idea that the SCPH-50000 series was even being sold in the U.S. yet. There was that announcement about the introduction in Japan back in April and then nothing more about U.S. sales. Where did you get your SPCH-50001?

That was an iPod-killer for me as well. I need access to a radio for a lot of reasons and I don't want to carry yet another gadget with me. That's why I went with the iHP-120 (in addition to it's other advantages like cost/battery life/ogg/recording/etc.).

I wonder whether the price drop might be related to the reported introduction of the new model in the U.S. soon. Perhaps they're lowering the cost on the old model to clear stock on it more quickly? Or maybe they're going for a two-tier pricing scheme: $179 for the SPCH-50000 and $99 for the older version.

I'm not visually-impaired, but I've always liked the European way of issuing differently-sized bills for the various denominations (do they do this in Japan or China too, I wonder?). On occasion, I've handed over a US $20 and gotten change back that suggests I've only given the teller a $10 (not that I think they're ripping me off, but same-size money is easy to confuse).

yup, all these features are why I'm getting the new iHP instead of an iPod. Plus the iHP also offers a radio.

Only thing better would be an ethernet port somewhere on the device or the dock, but even as is, the iHP-120 is still better than an iPod, at least for my needs.

I'm truly amazed that Charter and the FBI blew you off like this.

You've already tried going through channels so the next step is embarrassing them into doing something about it - notifying news media outlets and posting to slashdot are probably all you can do though. If Charter has any specific usenet groups like @Home used to have, I'd post this info there as well.

Best thing would be to get this on TV as then they can't ignore it. Charter is based in St. Louis and I'm sure one of the consumer affairs reporters at one of the TV stations in town would be interested in finding out that the major ISP in town is letting their users' passwords and other info get leeched.

From Chapter 2 of the book (re: examples of Shock and Awe):

"Fourth is the "Blitzkreig" example. In real Blitzkreig, Shock and Awe were not achieved through the massive application of firepower across a broad front nor through the delivery of massive levels of force. Instead, the intent was to apply precise, surgical amounts of tightly focused force to achieve maximum leverage but with total economies of scale. The German Wehrmacht's Blitzkreig was not a massive attack across a very broad front, although the opponent may have been deceived into believing that. Instead, the enemy's line was probed in multiple locations and, wherever it could be most easily penetrated, attack was concentrated in a narrow salient. The image is that of the shaped charge, penetrating through a relatively tiny hole in a tank's armor and then exploding outwardly to achieve a maximum cone of damage against the unarmored or less protected innards.

To the degree that this example of achieving Shock and Awe is directed against military targets, it requires skill if not brilliance in execution, or nearly total incompetence in the adversary. The adversary, finding front lines broken and the rear vulnerable, panics, surrenders, or both. Hitler's campaign in France and Holland and the seizure of the Dutch forts and the occupation of Crete in 1940 are obvious illustrations. The use of Special Operations forces in significant numbers is an adjunct to imposing this level of Shock and Awe."

Got to love how they mispell "Blitzkrieg".
