    If the phone is locked how can Apple install a new operating system on it?

    Investing in a diversified selection of index funds and staying the course will beat that vast majority of professional advisers. And the few advisers that will beat the market are not identifiable ahead of time.

    It should be configurable.

    If I want it reverse-chronological format the I should be able to set that and not have it changed. If twitter wants to offer a bunch of other configuration options then they should be configurable as well.

    Same with Facebook, if I pick Most Recent then leave it Most Recent.

    Those are all things that the settlers would have been doing on their original island.

    The New York Times article has the title "Let’s Not Move to Mars" and is basically a rant about how we won't be living on Mars anytime soon (if ever). Changing the title for the Slashdot article to "Let's Not Go To Mars" implies that the author is suggesting we don't even try to land a person on Mars which is not really the point of the original article.

    I think we should try to have an unmanned mission return to earth from Mars before we attempt to have a manned mission go to Mars.

    The Daily Mail link has "Carbon dating found the pages were produced between 568AD and 654AD" which seems like a more reasonable range.

    To make a smart phone mostly secure all you need to do it switch off all networking features, WiFi, Bluetooth, phone signal etc.

    Of course at that point it really isn't a smart phone anymore as a huge part of the usefulness of a smart phone is how you use it to connect with the rest of the world.

    The study did not look at real hiring decisions made by colleges but rather had STEM faculty members rank made up resumes. So to say that "Women Twice As Likely To Be Hired As Men" is not supported by the study.

    So they haven't created curved spacetime in a Quantum Optics Lab. They have done something that is a model of how they think curved space time would behave.
