"All science is either physics or stamp collecting" - Ernest Rutherford.
The theory of evolution is just stamp collecting and thus not very important.
I think that Civ IV also leaves out General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics from its tech tree. These, in my opinion, are more fundamental and important.
Try looking into "literate programming". There is a character representation at the lowest level, but the output is all nicely formatted and typeset.
I played around with Haskell a bit. It has a built-in feature where you can integrate it with LaTeX and produce some really nice program listings complete with typeset documentation.
Reality isn't quite so one-dimensional. I have some Macs, some Linux boxes, and an OpenBSD box. Each one is used differently. When I work, I have to use Windows. I'm not a big games. The nice thing is that when friends or family call for help on their Window boxes, I can quite honestly tell them that I have no idea.
Anecdotally, my mother has called a lot less about computer problems once she got a Mac, but she would fall into the "less computer savvy" rating.
No, I'm sure that you're not the only one. Monty Python's humour seems to be that kind that either people find pure genius or they watch with bemused expressions wondering why the person next to them is rolling on the floor.
It's probably one of those genetic things like being able to roll your tongue. If you like them, great. If not, don't worry about it.
I watched the video without any noticeable nausea. The videography seemed rather amateurish with jerky pans and pointless zooming in and out.
The thing is, who (other than the company itself) has a launch party for a product? I haven't even heard of rabid Mac users having launch parties for new versions of OS X.
Certification standards require the airplane (at least for commercially certified, I'm not sure about experimental-amateur built) to be controllable with one control system inoperative.
This means that you can steer the plane by using the ailerons if your rudder has failed (many pilots fly this way). You can control pitch using the trim tab and power settings (difficult, but can be done). And, bank can be controlled by the rudder (handy if you're busy folding a map). If the throttle cable breaks, you can control power somewhat by using the mixture knob.
There is likely already information about you floating around somewhere on the internet that you don't control. The solution is not to stick your head under a pillow and hide. The solution is to take control and post information that you want people to know about you.
You don't have to post pictures of you naked and drunk. You can post comments about your research and technical interests. Talk about the wonderful experience that you're getting at work or in class.
Do you want the embarrassing pictures (posted by someone else) to be first in a google search for your name, or would you like comments about several different open source projects that you've contributed to to be first?
Take charge and drown out any adverse propaganda with the propaganda that you control.
4. Aviation is often an international activity. So you would have to get all ICAO members to agree to use new encrypted radios. It's been enough of a hassle just changing the channel spacing from 100kHz to 50kHz to 25kHz and finally 8.33kHz in Europe while the USA wants to go with a VHF digital radio solution that packs 4 voice channels into 25kHz, that I don't see encrypted ATC radios happening any time soon.
I find it curious that the reactions to this idea are both so sceptical and so negative.
I've been noticing this a lot lately as well. It seems like a quick way to get an "Insightful" mod is to start pointing out all the possible flaws in a new idea (what could possibly go wrong). I'm not sure if these are real objections or people looking for quick karma.
Good grief. We're suppose to be anti-social nerds. Anything to help cut down on dealing with real people is a good thing, right? Right?
For the same reason people who think for sure they'd be a part of Star Fleet if it existed very rarely join the military.
In the Star Trek universe, Star Fleet is the only organization that does anything interesting. Colonists are basically cannon fodder. Corporations are corrupt. Any scientific research is either driven by Star Fleet or megalomaniac/corrupt scientists (or both). It doesn't leave much choice.
There is overlap between the AM band and what the ADF will receive. There is no overlap between the FM band and what any radio nav equipment in an airplane will receive.
If you happen to have a HF radio in your airplane (needed only on long over-water flights, and there are ways around that), you can communicate on some of the HAM bands.
The thing is that I can control what information about myself I put up on Facebook. I can project a nice clean-cut professional image there and just not talk about what I do with my wife in bed.
It's about control. If I can control the information about me, then it's not a problem. If someone is peeping in my windows and posting about it, then it is a problem.
Mountain waves can be felt in small piston powered aircraft even flying significantly above the tops of the mountains, even several thousand feet above the peaks on either side of the valley you're crossing.
A friend of mine who is an airline pilot tells of feeling the effect in an A320 at cruising altitude - think 30,000 feet or so. The autothrottles come back when you're in the lift part and then push forward when you get out of the lift.

Obviously, his 500 word essay didn't get him accepted to MIT.

I take it you've never seen The Fish Slapping Dance?
Your opinion is irrelevant, as is mine. The only people who's opinions matter, that is the appeals court, decided that it isn't interactive.

Because for a system administrator, paranoia is a basic job requirement.
This explains a lot about Slashdot.
Hey, I can still buy pocket protectors at Staples. I can see four of them from where I'm sitting right now.
Apple gets forgiven for everything, but if Microsoft even hinted of this they'd get flamed.
You must be new here.
Not to mention:

Neat stuff for physicists, but not for anyone else, at the moment, as far as I can tell.
Aren't physicists nerds?
True. I set up a DNS on my network that it the root for the .lan domain. It's only used internally, but it rather handy.
What if both girls were named Mary?
Thar she blows!
Let me explain something to you...

I remember hearing something like that a long time ago. This is certainly not a new idea. I'm pretty sure that it was fixed too.
You could try Minix.
