84,000 websites! And how many of those websites were actually even remotely popular? How many times did someone *actually* try to navigate to one of these sites and end up with the ICE notice? TFA doesn't mention any specifics...makes me doubt that anyone was seriously affected in this. Yes, I know, this is/. and I'm supposed to hate the USA for messing up again...but I'm just not convinced that this is a big deal.
Something strange has been going on at Redmond, WA lately. And I like it. It seems like a reversal of roles for Google to be reducing end-user choice and Microsoft to be making up for it.
Please wait patiently until March 18, 2011, and then confront this patent pool head on. We really need some closure on whether WebM is really going to be unencumbered by patents. The swift progress of internet innovation will be forever in your debt if you can definitively clear this up. Thank you.
But the voting was almost entirely on party lines, which I consider another fail for our society. Dichotomization (yes I made that word up) like this can't be good...
Dear Catholic slashdotters that know how to program, I know you're busy pretending to be atheist, but honestly, how hard would it be to write an open source competitor for this? I'm not Catholic, but I find it absurd that they sell this for money.
the MPAA says Hotfile "profits richly while paying nothing to the studios"
Funny thing for the MPAA to say. How much money will the musicians, actors, composers, directors, etc. (you know, the people with talent) make if/when the MPAA wins this case?
until now there really hasn't been any good solution
Not entirely true. Just visually dividing the screen in two has been an option this whole time; I don't see why no mobile OSs have attempted this option as it wouldn't be completely bad. Some apps, of course, do this for a more robust app; why not let the user divide the screen in two to run two apps?
they actually have a good, original idea
True, but not true. Nintendo DS? Saying "oh but the DS isn't a phone" doesn't count...this isn't the USPTO where you can just put "on a phone" after something that has prior art and call it innovation.;)
Dear Anonymous,
Who cares about government scandals. We wanna see this place! I expect gps coordinates within the week.
Love, someone who is definitely not your leader or anything...
So nice of you to come over, Mr FBI investigator...
The oldest Android phone, the G1, has community mods of Froyo. People have made extended batteries for the device. Both upgraded hardware (ok not a dazzling example, but still) and software, far beyond what you can say for the "iPhone 1"...
It boggles my mind. What's worse is the use of the possessive apostrophe + s in "identity's". WHAT BELONGS TO THE IDENTITY??? Oh it's just a grammar fail...
Realistically, that company is going to offshore jobs whether you participate or not. You have no influence in making the decision whether or not this will be done.
Given this set of circumstances, should you accept the job, you could actually have an influence in the ethical behavior of the company: do they provide adequate pay to the people hired offshore? Do they provide aid for the people whose jobs are being offshored?
The question, then, shouldn't be "is taking this job ethical?" The question should be, "am I capable of making a positive impact by taking this job?" I daresay the answer is an obvious "yes".
Prohibition was stopping anyone MAKING alcohol. This is stopping you helping yourself to other peoples work
Quite a naive description. Copyright holders have a stronger legal position to strike at people who distribute their copyrighted work. "Making" a place where you can get alcohol illegally and "making" a place where you can get copyrighted material illegally are quite analogous in my eyes.
The main idea behind prohibition was not that creating alcoholic beverages in and of itself was bad, but that consuming it was bad, and therefore those who enable its distribution should be restricted. This is again analogous with the idea that consuming copyrighted material (without paying for it) is bad, and therefore those who enable its distribution should be restricted.
I know I'm not the only geek that read "JSON" when first skimming this title.
Nobody knows why they felt the need to capitalize their group name JASON, since according to the WP article, it is a reference to the mythological Greek character Jason.
In no way do I wish to minimize the value of the people whose lives are lost. It is certainly tragic, and merits raising awareness that you can't always rely just on a GPS.
However, when someone says "x because y", without any sort of official study, the Slashdotter in me immediately starts thinking "correlation != causation".
Oh really? Where's the link to Google's announcement, then? I'm pretty sure that if Google "officially announces" something, it'll be on Google's blog, or the Android blog, or something. Enough with claiming "Official Announcement!" and then linking to some random second-rate blog...

See also an (overly?) praising review noting some changes that LibreOffice has made.
It will be called Honeybread cause for some reason Gingercomb just doesn't work!
Sent from my iPad!
Don't forget that's what they said about "iPad". If you have momentum with the sheeple, you can make anything work.
Can, for example, Slashdot see that I've been visiting eBay?
If it couldn't before, it can now >xD
I have a lot of respect for that woman.

Parent modded funny? Did I miss the joke or something? o_O I would've gone with insightful...a funny insight perhaps, but insightful...
The house failed to fail (?)

Honestly, $1.99 for this app?

Its location is a closely guarded secret.

any law the public doesn't agree with [could] be invalidated with a successful referendum...
Then we'd have three-fourths of the states being able to pass federal laws...
No, the states would be able to undo laws being passed, not necessarily pass laws themselves.

The beauty of grandparent comment's use of semicolons is stunning; the related sentences flow so well together with semicolons.
