The Cupertino City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to reduce the annual tax break it gives Apple (AAPL) -- America's most valuable company by market capitalization, with a net income last year of $41.7 billion -- by 15 percent. Having wrung that concession from its richest corporate resident, the council then voted unanimously to give its final blessing to Apple's proposed new headquarters. The spaceship-shaped building has now officially landed.
Back in 1997, when Apple was on the verge of collapse, the city agreed to return 50 percent of the taxes generated each year from Apple's business-to-business sales as a way to help maintain the company's health and, more importantly, its Cupertino address.
Sounds like someone made a deal with the devil and now has a bit of buyers remorse.
The AV software locked the log to perform the scan, and the medical device crashed. They had to reboot the PC to keep working.
While not expected, this sort of failure (logging device unavailable) IS predictable, and IMHO should;t have caused the crash in the first place. I'm a big fan of a "broken windows" style of software assessment. If I can see something broken (no matter how trivial), it makes me start to wonder what other things could be amiss that I can't see.
Or to give a car analogy. If I have a car with mis-matched seams between panels, I'm going to be worrying about what other parts of the car have been treated with the same (low) level of care.
From this site (which summarizes a bunch of national polls), 5 out of 6 polls have Hillary beating the Donald. And it is 6 out of 6 for Sanders beating him So it looks like he most likely won't win.
From the outside he looks incredibly divisive even in his own party, but are there enough disenfranchised people that would jump on his band wagon to get over the line?
There is going to be some really weird dynamics going on for the election. Everything from how much Trump and Cruz have divided the GOP, through to how much of the GOP see Hillary as an extension of Obama and Dem voters staying home because they think they have it in the bag.
You also have to remember that voting isn't compulsory and that for every Federal election since 1972 less than 60% of eligible voters have turned out.
Is this fancy machine Learning going to be out driving Uber cars at peak periods? Or is it simply going to send messages to drivers in a particular area saying "Get your butt out there.. or else" ??
1. A white kid walking around at night in a hoodie looks like a thug also. He does not look like a tech billionaire.
Yeah but a White kid in a hoodie has Zuck as a role model (And I managed to say that with a straight face) or any number of tech startups. A Black kid in a hoodie does not have similar role models.. so there is a difference there.
2. All low income kids need help regardless of race. 3. Sure programing and tech can be a good way to make a living but studies have shown that people that go to vocational schools leave school with jobs and little debt.
I agree with you on those points, however Blacks are proportionally in poverty at a much higher rate than whites (on average 2 1/2 times across the entire US) so it will require extra effort to balance that out.
Finally you have to give Prince props for doing something he cared about and not making some big "look at me!!, look at me!!" fuss about it.
Can anyone explain to me why anyone would use Apple products? I suspect I'll be modded down to -1 so people can pretend my post doesn't exist and not answer the tough questions.
I have an iPad, an iPod touch, mac book pro and iMac at home. (However my day job involves an awful lot of Microsoft based products and systems)
I find for the systems I have that "they just work" , no need to fiddle with them to get something working that should have been there out of the box. Yes they have their own quirks as to how things are done. Yes they keep changing things ahead of the curve (EG loss of floppy). Yes they annoy this shit out of me at times ( as does MS and linux systems I have used) . In the end I tend to agree that OS X is what linux on the desktop *should* be.
BTW the Apple tax is an old chestnut that has been discounted many times. I'll willing to bet that if you try and configure *any* laptop to meet the same specs as an Apple system you will end up at the same or greater price - and by that I mean all specs including weight and volume. (however don't mention the premium they put on additional memory for drive space:P)
Where do you hang out now? I haven't found a decent replacement . ..
For me I tend to hang out at Ars. They have real journalists there who actually research (**gasp**) and write stories. In general I see things at Ars before they end up here (although I have seen the opposite as well). The only problem with Ars is that the commenting system sucks as it is a pure linear format.
At times I feel like I am in an abusive relationships with slashdot. The stories have gone down hill, but I haven't seen a better commenting/moderation system elsewhere.
No, the United States does not have a designated national insect. However, Congress did consider the Monarch butterfly as the national insect, but the legislation did not pass. Some U.S. states have "state insects," which are usually noted on state government web sites.
And List of U.S. state insects. Interestingly I recently head an entomologist talking about state insects on NPR. Apparently there had been cases where specific insects were nominated, but they actually weren't native species.
And by fetish I mean the obsession in the US to name a national this or national that. or a state this or a state that.
For example there is this list: List of state dances Why do you need a state dance? And why does NC have an official folk dance as well as an official popular dance?
There are several examples that resulted in living animals that were paralyzed.
But there seems to be a dearth of animals happily frolicking in the fields after such experiments. Seeing that happen is what I'd call a success, an the very minimum I'd like to see before slapping down my cash and saying "I want to buy a new body"
But can someone point to where he has done successful animal trials? Or even sliced and diced the same animal in order to reattach the spinal cord? Or Froze and un-froze an animal head?
In situations that do not resemble the training data, the network's response is essentially undefined, as well as unknown (it's all unknown... an NN results in behaviors that are not deterministic in the sense that anyone planned them out -- they are what they are, that's all.)
Nice experiment, though.:)
While I tend to agree with you on the un trained aspect (and I hope they have their liability insurance in place for driving an "unknown" on a public road) it would be interesting to know if you can combine NN datasets and thus massively parallelize the learning process.
Ever driven with one eye shut? The drunks needn't answer that one. But with two or more cameras and various other sensors, it seems that the "learning" process would go much smoother.
If you read TFA you'd see that the learning process is done with 3 cameras. Only the actual driving is done with a single camera.
But yes I drive with "one eye shut" all the time courtesy of being blind in one eye. However I prefer my automated systems to have some degree of redundancy - and a single camera failure would cripple this system.

OS-9 was/is a great OS. I used it to run a full multi-user multi-tasking system (with preemptive multi-tasking) on my Tandy CoCo back in the day (with 256kB of memory!), and also used it in many industrial embedded systems using a 68K.

Big foot has left the grassy knoll, and didn't leave a forwarding address with the illuminati. Perhaps he was kidnapped by the greys?
I thought that sewing machines had been doing this ever since they were invented!

I never did find out how to defend myself from a pointy stick.

When Red Dwarf is considered obscure on a site targeting nerds is when I really have to question how many nerds are actually here anymore.
I bet that right now Natalie Portman is silently crying into her hot grits.
Maybe we *are* all cows.
Well.. I better get going now! Should not take too long. What 170k years? That's not bad. We can use one of those new 1700 generations ships!
Well if you are going to do that .. you could call the ship "Red Dwarf" for luck. Just be careful of any cats you bring on as pets.
There is a time and a place for profanity.

You mean like every other country? Every country has a national bird/flower/etc.
Not to the extent that I have seen it in the US.
A better question is why is this on Slashdot?
Who knows. I would have nixed it in the firehose if I had seen it. But still .. it's better than bennett (well anything is better than bennett)
