Neither does the government, because they've tried three times and dropped it after severe cost overruns and technical problems. I don't think saving a hundred thousand dollars on fuel is valid justification for spending 30 billion designing a superfluous 'defense system.'

The multithreading in the G5 architecture is tight. If you were performing enough integer math to saturate the CPU, which is the only time these sorts of comparative speed evaluations are relevant, the G5 damn well would be taking serious advantage of the second CPU.

If you're trying to use a tether system to transfer from a low orbit to a high orbit, a tether will only get you halfway there. The transfer from a low orbit to high involves one thrust event to change your orbit from circular to elliptical, with the perigee (closest point) staying the same, but the apogee (farthest point) higher up. The second thrust event happens when the satellite hits apogee, accelerating it so that the orbit becomes circular again.
You can hurl rocks up high all you want, but you'll need another force to make sure they stay there.
Note that this doesn't apply to the moon shots or interplanetary boosts. I'm only talking about parabolic and circular orbits, not hyperbolic or complex orbits. I'm sure this would be cool for those cases.
I'm in the right lane on the freeway going 62mph (100kph) and an 18-wheeler merges in front of me going 20. I disagree. Hydra would qualify as "IBM made" as it uses a standard network of standard IBM machines. For comparison, the top 'self-made' computer, Sandia's Cplant Cluster, was built by the lab from off the shelf components, wired together by custom drivers written by the engineers at Sandia.
If the thrust of this story was an amazing $AU/tflop ratio, it didn't come across at all in the summary.
