That is the design of the awful McCain-Feingold "reforms." They are designed so the current gatekeepers remain in full control and this new scary thing called the internet has no chance to move the political process in new directions.

  6. Why social security is NOT in the constitution on Mathematics of the Social Security "Crisis" · · Score: 2, Informative

Because old people should be taken care of by: Themselves, State Government, Local Government, or Private Charities. When the federal government was asked to do it, we ended up with a ponzi scheme that did nothing more than allow federal politicians to spend more money. The MOST incompetent retirement planner is the federal government. You can't even call the federal government a retirement planner, merely a money spender. Some future legislative session will actually to the planning. And it never happens.

  9. I somewhat agree on 'Star Trek: Enterprise' Cancelled? · · Score: 1

Many of the story arcs have been interesting. Tripp's visit to Vulcan and The Captain's "Lawrence of Vulcania" story line were excellent. The 3-episode arcs do still seem forced. Lot's of good implications come to a seemingly crashing end all too often. Let the stories play out for years.

They did finally realize the promise of a more "earthy" character development and less technological cheap tricks like holodecks, transporters, and particles of the week. In the beginning, it took them all of a few minutes to go "temporal cold war" which was just another technological cheap trick. They finally got around to delivering on some promises, but it may be too little, too late.

All kidding aside, I thought the recent Lawrence of Vulcan sub-plot was the height of the series, but the Brent Spiner return was a boring, over-acted waste. It seems the Star Trek universe seems to hit it out of the park with the Romulans, Vulcans, and Klingons, and messes everything else up.

These days, it may seem that Disney is nothing but crap merchants, but they used to have a quality period. Economics will favor hardware acceleration

I believe the software industry is still in its infancy and humanity's physical pursuits (hardware) will always outpace our intellectual pursuits (software). It remains simply too expensive to fix performance by assuming the software industry will deliver ubiquitous quality. Too many amateurs and those learning on the job in this industry (myself included) and that is not going to change anytime soon.

The complaining about limits in hardware and such generally comes from Pentium IV owners (myself included). Not all future architectures will be as dismal. Even for Intel. These multi-channel future baselines will be good. Reminds me of the Amiga days. When developers could assume multiple channels of DMA without penalty and concurrent access to memory while custom chips were displaying graphics and playing sounds, they were freed to do amazing things with the software.

  14. NOTHING to do with Stewart on CNN Cancels Crossfire · · Score: 1

CNN is not doing the right thing anymore than fox or any of the other media outlets. That would mean that CNN is a media outlet that is not solely concerned with ratings. They all are. It's all about the eyeballs with CNN as much as fox. CNN is just as calculating and envious of Fox. If they thought they could attract a larger audience of pro-Bush conservatives, they would switch editorial direction in a second. Don't believe they are above that. I think the new approach they are using with Lou Dobbs will grow. They are going with a mixed appeal to pro-American labor progressives and ethno phobic conservatives that hate those wetback darkies coming up to suckle at the US welfare teat (except for their own gardeners and nannies who apparently are not since they're getting paid under the table :-) It is all a competition and calculation about eyeballs and has nothing to principles. Carlson is gone because he was negotiating with the competition and wanted higher up in the corporate structure then CNN would give him. Carlson will not be the last screaming conservative you'll see on CNN. CNN will look more like Fox in the future. Fox will not look more like CNN. We get the media and the governments we deserve. Our eyeballs are attracted to the fame and hype and screaming and lurid sensationalism. The media is there to give us what we want, not what we need. 19. Not just telomeres, but DNA methylation states on Re-Pet a Reality · · Score: 3, Interesting

Many epigenetic states are also not reproduced because the cloned DNA doesn't go through the normal sexual process. Genetic imprinting (which parent does the expressed gene come from) is believed to be controlled through DNA methylation. Methylation in cloned cells is seen to be different. There are probably other differences we don't even know about. Limited lifespan is only one problem. Abnormally large offspring (possibly due to over-expression of genes) is one of a number of problems seen in clones. We have much to learn and the quest for cloning will help teach, but clones to date have genetic/epigentic states that have never existed in nature and do not go through the normal checks and balances that sexual selection provides.
