Your mistake was upgrading too early. I am rather glad I skipped the DVD stage entirely; I only bought two DVDs and one was a gift. You should have skipped the DVD generation, or switched to renting when they announced high definition several years ago.

Or be like my father, who bought a BetaMax recorder twenty years ago... and never upgraded :]

that's not what I meant. I meant that ideology at home didn't turn into moral action abroad, by their own standards. France and Britain hosted many lectures on the rights of man but policy towards slavery and st domingue/Haiti were decided by monetary concerns.

Yet somehow "all men are created equal" didn't stop France from imperial/colonial expansion in Africa, nor did it prevent France from trying to conquer Mexico, or the US the Phillipines.

The actual ideology was created for the purpose of grabbing power for the commercial classes from the Old Regime, not for creating an egalitarian society.

If the soul goes to heaven immediately at the time of death, then what's the point of a Christian burial? Why don't we just cremate everybody and save valuable real estate for mad scientists and their ilk?
Interaction ritual theory in sociology explains this; the process of burial helps the dead's group of friends and family come together (and stay together) and put the loss behind them.

This is about breach of contract, but it is also about breach of criminal code, the Texas ban on computer tampering as designed by the Texas legislature.

The truth is that while there is not bribery or the kind of corruption you would find in a place like Sierra Leone or Russia, but there is a lot of corruption that keeps the elite 1% in control.

If someone speaks out against the government and runs for parliament, the party that has run the place for the last 50 years sues for slander/libel and takes everything he owns. The person is also banned for running for office for a few years. Opposing the ruling party is like a peasant challenging a king, even if you are rich.

The judges are not exactly bribed, but they know how they are "expected" to rule in these cases, and the ruling party is all-powerful.
