You're wrong if you think that they *need* to compete with Apple.
What Apple figured out is that they don't need to compete with anyone to win, they need to make sure their balance sheets are in the black. If they want to end up in the black, competing becomes a very good idea. But to "win?" They just have to have more money at the end of the day.
Because I don't know if Apple has the responsibility to wield that weapon. I nominally think flamethrowers are a useful tool for the military or civil service(or some other generally "good" entity that has a nominally good reason to set things on fire).
If Apple bought some flamethrowers, I'd want to know what's up.
No, but, as the poster says below, competition is generally a good thing. Too much choice is a bad thing too, but, now ARM has to get it's ass in gear and improve multithreading and multicore. I don't think consumers will care one lick if it's a Medfield, Snapdragon, Tegra, OMAP or whatever.
But they'll notice a year over year increase in battery life, speed, etc. That's certainly going to mean something to the average user.
Ignorant? You're espousing a massive conspiracy theory here by a Government that can pull strings to have a guy extradited out of a country that will lay down and go with anything we ask for, to another on supposedly phoney charges through a country that has ridiculously high standards for extradition and we get him there.
Hillary probably doesn't give a shit one way or the other about Julian Assange. He's just not that important.
Actually that's a smart move. Nokia's making very little on those tight margin devices. If Nokia wants to save money they'd stop trying to pursue those devices.
A) It's easily beat. It isn't going to do a damn thing to harm criminals, its just going to make legitimate citizens have to pay even more for ammo and firearms.
Boohoo.
No, seriously, I'm crying tears here for your paranoia and need to destroy things.
If I were the type to drink during the day I'd take a shot every time someone said Big Pharma. Because usually what follows would lead me to drink anyway.
You do know that there's a generic polio vaccine right?
They wouldn't do this. They didn't use a former hookup of Osama bin laden's to get him. They just went in and nabbed him. Why aren't they just nabbing him now with the help of Scotland Yard and MI6 and the SAS?
The mental gymnastics you have to do to go from, "Politically active woman has run in with creepo rapist megalomaniac with a revolutionary fetish" to "The US wants his head and is using this woman to get to him" is ABSURD. It's conspiratorial thinking AND slut shaming AND rape apologetics, now only if someone will tie this to male rights I'll hit internet male asshole bingo thanks to the free space.
Putting the thing into a plastic case and embedding the keyboard was Steve's idea. Trying to keep it simple and not suck is still kind of a revolutionary concept.
We're all so willing to live with things that suck. I mean, even OSX sucks in many ways(I prefer it because it sucks less than Windows, and while Linux is great for stability, living with the OS is a kind of suck I can't deal with; even if it sucks less overall).
If Henry Ford listened to his customers he'd be selling faster horses.
What users want is to be able to do things and not worry if the whole thing goes pear shaped due to bad software. Or that they're faced with crappy interfaces. Or if they're faced with... Well. It goes on.
Given how often the slashdot crowd is just plain wrong, I'd say they have a hit on their hands with windows 8 and metro. But it's likely to fail.

Seriously? Can you back any of that up?
I've known some folks from Mumbai who strive to make that distinction too :)

Makes me wonder if this is evil or good.
Evil because it's fucking with Google. This is squarely a jab to google's breadbasket. If WWDC wasn't a big "fuck you" to google, this certainly is.
Good because this is anonymity to the next level. Defeating snooping from big business to try to sell us shit we don't need.
Evil though because this idea should belong to everyone.
TBH, I'm surprised the EFF didn't figure this one out sooner.
Google+ on the ther hand...
Because android is open.

Oh jeez.

Should I even get you started on FireWire? :P
Because it's not baked into the motherboard controller logic.
Although seriously Apple? The Mac Pro isn't meant to be a tiny machine. Just put a discrete USB3.0 controller on there.
Gladwell's clearly full of shit. But you're not even in the ballpark man.
No one other than the extreme tech dweebs who remember BeOS' run in with Microsoft's shitty licensing deals will even remember how ruthless he was.
Gates is a bleeding heart liberal and doing what he thinks is right.

Hes going to have to or had to go to the consulate or the embassy. He already has an unhealthy distrust of the system. How is he going to manage?
They themselves acknowledged that they host a lousy show.
I mean im a fan. But what made the show listenable is that yeah. They don't have a lot of, on air at least, ego into their show.
Think they host a lousy show? They do too.
Gruber pointed this out:
Device has the perfect name for something trying to ape the BlackBerry design.
if that were true, python or ruby would rule the roost for web development jobs, not PHP(TBH, I love PHP because it's kind of batshit nutty).
I suspect it's a chicken/egg situation. Which comes first, developers using languages or projects using languages(not just jobs mind you)?
So do both. That might not be economically feasible. But if it is, then do both.
...aaaaand PC gamers are wondering why I went Mac and console only for games rather than PC.
The games are still buggy now they're CONSISTENTLY buggy!

Here's a clue: He's NOT THAT IMPORTANT.
Yawn.
