there can be caches, proxies, to-multicast gateways and god knows what else, per single user. I assume that logic in getting web streamers to pay twice as much, because they can be certain of who is listening to them. They have probably presented idea to judge that, oh look, all computers on internet have IPs. - wrong! Few places I have worked at had local mirrors of many shoutcast streams. Cutting on bandwith significantly. See, right now streaming is *EXTREMELY EXPESIVE*. RIAA is so fucking afraid of multicast, that it is not even funny. All they are doing is trying to set forth rules of the game, because they have the most cash, so when multicast and IPv6 hits the streets, regular joe casting 31337 mp3z out of his basement, to million people for same 0(1) times bandwidth he will not have interfere with anyone.
Radio as it stands is dead when full blown multicast arrives. Whats more is that there is *UNLIMITED* amount of stations to be had *ANYWHERE*, for pretty much nothing compared to current streaming costs. This will strangle RIAA to no extent, unless they kill everyone on IPv6 comittee and annouce a coup of internet standards: All your standards are belong to us!

Contrary to your belief that net is composed of well educated people who see pressure and are not subdued by it, you are wrong. Advertisements DO work, like spam, capturing small population slice.
This is unfortunate, and i think most major providers must attempt to block such nonsense. I do not mind unobtrusive ads, like on google, that actually flow along with your query, and sometimes help find extra information!
I think barrier will be broken once ads will offer something to user in exchange for paying attention to it. Have you seen shoot, zap smash the monkey ads?(duh!) Well that ad provides entertainment for web user that surfs very rigid content.
Ad that offers something to the user, may catch attention of one , pass the threshold of filtering and annoyance ad dismissal, may bring magnitude large set of audience than otherwise large square pop up ads about sun and oracle bits they are willing to sell for a small fortune.
Ad must say, here is something free, that you might need, in return of taking it(enteratinment, info), learn about our product and maybe have a deal.
As for websites turning to subscription models, they have clearly have not grasped what the net, is. Perhaps they will capture some people who transalete from newspaper world into webworld, but those are not the futre of the net. New media distribution models will be coming to lower the cost of distribution, such as multicast(I assume with IPv6, cuz one for IPv4 is dead). Once that is everywhere, one may be able to cast from garage to everyone in the world, and take exactly 1 times bandwiths, as unicasting to a buddy. Leveraging smart ways of technology is what internet is all about. Its about being able to take new stuff, maybe make your own and do one man show that will make drone megacorporations silly.
If you do that though, you might fall under many laws promoted by corporations into power, that attempt to raise barrier to market entry trying to cut out joes with super cool ideas that can embarrass their multimillion IT departments, with flick of a finger, few key strokes and some ingenuity.

You are right software is more like culinary art, than engeneering or manufacturing.
Lewises paper is highly academical and disproves theories, created by Carnegie's professors. It goes on the edge, trying to get people to see that not ever software estimation dates should be taken to be as hard as granit, and build companys whole being around them. I have skipped few companies last 2 years, many of them thought that they can expect certain things by a date while taking software architect's estimates and handing them to software developers.
There is general concensus in the industry, that if you don't finish a task by a given date, you ass will be in the hot water. What is often missed is fact that date is often more like a wish than something mathematically fixed or composed of intuitively simple pieces each as easy to make as lego toy.
My critique on yours is that you propogate the fact that its possible to stake certain dates and be ready by them.
So often it goes, that people will design a system from nice flow charts, hand pieces of charts to programmers, who will return estimates based on which a target data will be made. What often is not realised, is that each one of the plans may be 2,3 even 10 times bigger on timescale.
Then there is integration timelines.
What I am trying to say here is that some people who are not skilled in art of software development, may expect programmers to create dates and push software by given date out, without bugs if they read your paper.
I agree with you. I however, have managed to keep myself out of shitjobs, my friends with degrees were getting. Like ones with ton of politics in offices, where they have to report to two or more bosses, etc, etc. Most often companies will choose you by the degree are ones who would not care how good your are, but wether you can get work, done keep low profile and be less of a person, more of a drone. It always works both ways. If you have deep knowlege in field, consider bribing and getting a degree that way. If you have $$$ to pay for full education, three years might be just the rest you need away from routine, that is if you are a bright person.
Switching routine might present you with some rest. And since you will be secure in funds you will have leg up from students who are getting into those silly loans. Not that anything is wrong with them, it will be one, or few less things to worry about while doing school.
I suggest removing the fact from resume and doing job search, survey the companies that will be contacting you, see what you like, maybe getting degree to have leg up is not worth it.
Everything has advantages and disadvantages. Removing yourself from emotions related to your carrer progress will give you best results...
cheers,
p
Many people now will run to the stores and buy the thing. Suckers. The internal format in the card is 16 bit so when it says 24 bit it really upsamples your stream. If you want REAL 24 bit sound I would highly disadvise you from buying this card. Its sort of like Platinum Rip off, where there was some analog mixing going on in the chip, when incoming and outgoing were digital formats. Bleh. If you have computer speakers, of course you wouldn't notice the difference, so there may be some value to windowsish features glitter.
What kind of powers do you have to stop microsoft from making its decisions? If they don't listen to you do they go to jail, or fined on personal basis?

Have you seen fines for high rate of chargebacks? You'd be astonished. go over 1% and you will owe to VISA , Mastercard or others.
thats problem, if your rate of chargebacks is over 1% then you get fined like a gazillion dollars. This is not rumor, it is true.
