This is all great and all, but I don't do windows and would really like to see some more games for Linux. If some company (LinuxGames?) was working on ports like Loki was, I'd be more interested. Or if more companies would put Linux versions in the set like they did with UT2003, I'd be more inclined to buy it.
Just my $0.02. That, and I'm not a big fan of war simulations myself.
I maintain several Solaris systems, both sparc and 40 intel systems (our Unix Lab). The problem with Solaris is there's no software for it! no Java 3d like on Sparc, no SVG plugins for Netscape or any other SVG software used in our computer graphics course here at the University. Hardware compatibility is abismal, only supports limited Nics and video cards, no DRI, limited sound card, and so forth.
Sun does not do any marketing to entice companies to port their applications to Solaris x86. Even sun doesn't provide decent support, no Java3d, have to use Mesa for OpenGL, no Journalling file system like Veritas for Sparc.
I'm sorry, but I just can't take this seriously until Sun gets serious. Anyone that says Solaris is better than Linux on Intel Hardware needs their head examined.
We all did. That's one of the purposes amniotic fluid provides the fetus. (hey, I have 4 kids so I've been through this a lot).
I'm reminded of that scene in the Abyss where the navy seals provide the liquid oxygen to the diver. He says, "we all did it for 9 months. Your body will remember."
Remember that Apple's is done right with nice ambient light, not glaring light right in your eyes so that you *still* can't see the key you are typing.
Why is there a big deal about this, other than the promise by IBM and making good that promise? Anjuta DevStudio, which is one of the best GUI IDE's on Linux IMHO, supports Java. I personally havean't gotten into Java, so I could care less about this, but Anjuta is fully GPL'd already.
There's always CodeWeavers X-Over plugIn. But I'm not a big fan of Flash sites anyway as most don't really accomplish anything and are very poorly implemented.
to think about the code. If the code doesn't really make use of the G4 processor and it's capabilities (Altivec, bigendian, etc.), then the program will perform poorly. Photoshop is pretty well consistantly better on G4 (except under OS X it seems) than it's PC counterpart. Also, the P4 is optimized for Multimedia applications, the G4 is not.
I'm curious if the power boost needed to accomplish this task must sure boost the amout of Rad's your body is injesting by being around such equipment. That can't be good. I don't particularly want to die that way. Can anyone say MICROWAVE? I knew you could.
I maintain 40 solaris x86 pc's in a university lab, plus several solaris servers (some sparc and one x86). Solaris on intel just plain sux when it comes to hardware support. Very limited NIC's, sound, and video can be used. Not to mention solaris for x86 doesn't have a journalling file system like Veritas for their Sparc counterpart.
If Sun wants to make Solaris x86 viable, they need to have MUCH better hardware support, make it cheaper ($99 for Solaris 9 don't cut it), promote it more, and conform to more standards like the FSB.
not to mention that you *need* 4GB of RAM to run Solaris with any kind of decent performance. It's a hog and many solaris apps are hogs, and just plain slow!
Use CodeWarrior's PowerPlant. It's a full C++ framework that will let you code to Naitive OS X. CodeWarrior is put out by Metrowerks so see the link for more details.
I have Gentoo 1.2 on my Laptop (Compaq Presario 720CA) and the extra speed is nice. It also works a bit better than the RedHat 7.3 I had on there. Yes, it's a bit painful to install, especially if you don't have broadband, but the result is well worth it.
For those of you that site install time, you didn't read the article did you? For 1.4 there is pre-compiled binary install that only takes 1hr. Check it out, it's worth it and you learn a lot.
This whole thread begs the question, how does one become a Certificate Authority. Someone started it and others are available if you look at the CA's in your browser prefs. Couldn't a company be their own CA then?
That may be true. However, in 7.3, the source CD's where in a separate directory if you wanted them. Now, 5 CD's are in one directory and the docs CD in a separate directory, leading to some confusion.
At 5 CD's, I don't think many people will download and burn the sucker. RH 7.3 actually wanted to see all 3 CD's on install. I'm really hoping RH 8 doesn't really require all 5 on install though it may depend on which items you install. But *5* CD's is a bit much, dontcha think?
I don't consider Galeon to really be "lean" in this context. Galeon *requires* mozilla to be installed. The whole thing. so instead of 1 browser on your lean box, you have 2. This isn't very efficient.
Mozilla should publish geko as a library that galeon can use/include then you only need galeon. Galeon 2 wouldn't have to wait for mozilla to catch up to gtk2 and so forth. and THEN, and only THEN would it be a "lean" browser.
Don't get me wrong, Galeon is great. it's my default browser, but having it require another browser in it's entirety is not "lean".
I'm not sure Apple needs to feel threatened by the NexIIe just yet. One of the big problems with this device is it's still using USB which is much slower than iPod's FireWire.
I like the price of the NexIIe, but I'm not sure the interface is quite as good as Apple's iPod either. but I don't have either in my hand to do a proper comparison either;-)
If OpenOffice for OS X is Java based, I won't be running it on my OS X box, and neither should anyone else.
I think history (read: corel) has already proven that you shouldn't write desktop apps in Java. Remember the Corel Office written entirely in Java? it sucked, it was slow, it was pathetic, just like Java!
by man. Please give me a break and give this alien watching thing a break. This continent (N. America) could pay off the respective national depts with the money farmed out to groups like this and SETI. Just stop funding them and voila, no dept!
That's a nice looking case, but it lacks one major feature of the G4 Mac cases, the ability to pull down the cover where the MB is actuall attached and get access to everthing nicely. nice looking plastics though.
that batman could win. All the martial arts in the world isn't going to do squat when you break your hand/foot/arm/head when you hit superman's body. Sorry, that's not a fight. As others have pointed out, in a raw "cage match" with no kryptonite, no bat belt, superman would only have to hit Batman one time and game over.

just my humble opinion
ROTFL!! .png ;-)
That is a riot. A once in a web hit experience. Now you need to send them that

Why is that square world icon now the icon for Apple items? What happened to the silver apple?

Use Apple's own Burn program. It's part of OS X and interfaces with iTunes. You don't have to look very far, or did you look at all?
