I installed XP for a friend (go, ahead, click that Reply link and tell me I should've put Linux on his system), and after 1 hour of staring at the stupid default UI, I switched it to the standard Windows look. Everything became a lot clearer and became less of a strain in the eyes afterwards. MS is beginning to suck at the UI department nowadays, the skinnability is clearly a response to themable Gnome and KDE. Windows Media Player 7 and 8 also sucks compared to version 6.4... with MP7/MP8 you can't seek to an exact time (dragging the seek-bar doesn't show at what position the video/song will resume when I let go of the said bar), and while in MP7 the seek-bar covers almost the whole horizontal range of the window, in MP8 (non-skinned mode) the bar covers only 130 pixels - only 10% of my 1280x960 resolution.
Running Windows 2000 and IE6, I did as you told me to do, the expected result (it froze) happened. But minimizing the IE window (through the taskbar), clicking the Start Menu or clicking in another window (Winamp in my case) got rid of the context menu, and the print dialog responded normally afterwards, including when I click the Cancel button to close it. Nevertheless, it's a bug.
My favorite (also most disappointing) Windows knowledge base articles regarding bugs are the ones which under the "Cause" heading say: "this behaviour is by design."
Although I agree with the idea somewhat, the ones that end up getting screwed by it would be the sysadmins, as many among us would agree. What about a worm that searches for Office documents and delete them? That would teach the luser. Of course unless they're in a good shop that has backups, then the sysadmin would have to suffer.
What about a worm with CIH's payload.. fuck the BIOS.. that would really teach people. Or would they ever learn anyway? That would really cost billions in computer replacement and lost work (and not just half a day because of a downed server, imagine how long it would take if suddenly say 100,000 computers had to be replaced at once?), and the person who writes would be someone who doesn't care much for his life anymore, because he'd spend the rest of it in jail.
Also, having a digital watch doesn't make a difference, you'd still be unhappy. (from HHGTG , rest in peace.)

Quite right, I first thought he used Linux so that he can use Perl to monitor for the shutdown signal, but he has an ATX motherboard, so it would be no problem to use Windows, because the motherboards sends a software interrupt when you press the power button while the computer is running; Windows can either put the computer to standby, or shut it down safely.
Maybe it's because he doesn't want to hassle with reboots.
They don't drive with the windmill on top of the car, that would be idiotic. The windmill can recharge the car's batteries overnight with winds of about 12mph, while the car is parked.
Great efficiency. The camera hack is also cool, IMO.
Ah, I thought I recognized the movie, "At First Sight" (Info from , Official Movie Site), and apparently it's a true story.
The movie was pretty interesting, it was hard for the man, because he can't identify what he sees and can't distinguish between real objects and pictures of them.
If my boss gave me the choice between singing that song and sodomizing myself with a baseball bat dipped in a paste of ground glass and 5-minute epoxy, I'd ask him for a map to the nearest Home Depot.
Interesting fact, but somehow I feel Ellison would've called the right people (hey, he's a rich guy, I'm sure he knows some of those people), and asked/told them that he wants to do that, and if they rejected, he would have somehow argued until they agreed.
Should we be worried anyway, if the government really wanted to make a national database, forking $ $COST_OF_ORACLE would be nothing to them.
I wrote it here before, read the tip at the bottom of this page. It involves hex-editing a DLL.
I wonder how long we can still do that until MS decides to extend Windows File Protection to protect MS Office and prevent you from making any changes.. "Bad user! Your modifications have been undone! This is my computer! Stop trying to do anything else or I'll DMCA you!
Talk about fucked up, hey? MS removes the attachment feature because users are too fucking stupid to realize they shouldn't trust all emails with attachment. I use Outlook 2000 (I don't run untrusted attachments, and double-clicking a vbs file opens it in Notepad on my PC) and no way I'm upgrading to Office XP. But there is a way around it involving hex-editing a particular DLL and changing the banned extensions to "LOL", "OMG", etc (More about it at the bottom of this page)..
Bah, QT5's UI still suck.. how do you change a video's contrast, brightness, etc setting? By turning the option on from the menu (no button on the GUI), and then adjusting the bars that show up on the "screen", on top of the movie, like on a TV. If you are adjusting contrast, and want to switch to adjusting brightness, how do you do it? Click up/down until the adjuster bar switches to the bar for brightness. Arrgghh!!!! I don't even run movies full screen, why must the UI interfere with the movie, when there's lots of space outside the "screen"?!?!?
Try Yahoo!, with POP3 access... I used iName, but then I suspected it lost some of my emails. Yahoo! with POP3 is good, although you have to agree that they'll send you ads in the mail, although I only get one every 2 months (I guess I'm not a demographically good market). They also support forwarding, but I prefer the POP3 access, that's one less server that has to catch your email before it lands in your computer.

You are quite right, a few screens in this picture resemble this screenshot, a file-sharing program that is popular in Sweden.
When you right-click on a window, the default setting gives you the menu that controls the transparency of the window you just right-clicked on. This causes trouble when you right-click the tray icon: the tray menu does show up, but it the program catches the right click and thinks you want to change the transparency of the taskbar, and it shows the "transparency control" menu, making the tray menu disappear. Accessing the tray menu by left-clicking the tray icon, or using modifier keys to the right click fixes this problem.
That's the abridged version.. the real one goes (sorry for the plagiarism)...
BillyGates: cool, get me Nvidia... Hello? Nvidia? I hear you make video cards. We gonna need one. We gonna need a mobo too. What you don't make those? U better get on it. What, you don't want to? Well there's bad news for you, we can no longer support your graphic cards in Windows. Oh, what's that, you have on your desk a piece of paper from R&D that says they're thinking of a motherboard design? Well you're going to have a mobo then? That's good!
Of course that's claiming nVidia were forced to make mobos. They really don't do they? They have a chipset coming out, and a reference motherboard to test the chipset on. Or are they really making mobos for Xbox? If so, were they really actually forced by MS?
An open letter is a nice idea.. I wonder, if you spam newspapers/media with the letter (+ pictures), how much chance are they going to run it? Well if you want to pursue further, maybe buy a domain name. Oops apparently there's already a website. The media might find it more interesting, if you can portray you as the small man fighting against the evil corp.
To Jutus, good luck with whatever you're going to do... give them hell, don't give up, make them pay! Count how many percent these computers were from your total assets, and try to inflict the same percentage of damage to UPS's revenues.
Bill Gates's book was "Business @ The Speed of Thought". I like the reference, but since when is "stupid" a noun? "Speed of Thought" still makes sense, but "Speed of Stupid"? What does that mean? How fast is stupid?

SQL server.. get a real system. Microsoft is only good at making GUI and the desktop OS behind it, but no way for servers.
