I'd tend to give a game company who's been around longer than
half the population of this website the benefit of a doubt.
Unless half of the Slashdot audience are aged 116+, the company is older than any of us. Nintendo has been around since 1889. Admittedly they sold playing cards, but the intent was similar.
I guess it is easier to promote it as a college library without books rather than say they are closing the library and opening a coffee house, so they can make a quick buck.
The Algebraist has an interesting premise, but I would not recommend it for someone unfamiliar with space opera. I'm halfway through the paperback at the moment. The writing is stilted in certain sections and background information on dweller society and the universe as a whole are tacked onto ongoing storyline, as opposed to introducing the various aspects when necessary. The book would have been improve if Iain Banks had used the appendix to describe the structure of Dweller society, perhaps an article written by Fassin.
"I won't rest until we can eliminate wrongdoing," says eBay''s Alastair MacGibbon."
Who talks like that? I can imagine Batman or Judge Dredd coming out with some heroic gibberish, but the guy works for eBay. What is he going going to do? Wear his underwear on the outside and stomp out crime in time for tea?
Take a look at this page for other Amiga easter eggs.
The easter egg fiasco caused some major problems. RJ Mical told me that Commodore recalled all unsold machines in the UK and replaced the ROMs, resulting in a 2-3 month delay.
I've changed my work pattern in the last few weeks. I try to get my work finished by 4pm, then I spend an hour reading and replying to the various e-mails that have arrived during the day. My productivity has increased significantly and I feel under less pressure to handle several tasks in quick succession.
"shamless plug for ThinkGeek, who is also owned by OSTG."
Where can I buy a shamless plug? The DIY store only sells the standard variety, or have just sold the last one. Can anyone recommend a web site that sells glass nails?
This new planet, orbiting around G-star like our Sun (HD 149026), weighs roughly equal to that of Saturn, while its size is significantly smaller in diameter. Planetary modeling suggests that the core of the planet alone must have 70 times more mass than Earth, indicating the possible existence of a metallic solid core inside the planet.
Great! They found Cybertron. It is only a matter of time before the Transformers bring their war to Earth.
Dear God! You cannot make it work outside the US. Electricity does not work in the same way in other countries and it would be dangerous, nay DEADLY, to try it. If you want to buy something for your parents, get them one of the new wind-up radios. They will be able to receive local programmes and will get some exercise.
Maybe you'd rather they buy you a Mac and give you all the software, including the source, for free? Or better yet, they should give you a Mac, PAY you to use it, and give you all the software for free. That will really help Apple thrive...
Hell no! They would have to throw in some dancing girls and strippers. And pay for the shipping.
Actually, forget the Mac, software and source. Just send me the...

Piracy is a useful, if dodgy method for any company to gain market share in a new market. Apple do not currently rely upon MacOS Intel for funding, so it will not affect their bottom line for a few years.
The content will be encoded in an open format. Although the commercial sector encourage the US government to endorse proprietary formats, the library community are well aware and have played a huge role in advancing open standards. The GPO have been planning these actions for the last 5 years and have visited various public bodies around the world to fully understand their commitment.
"Since it now turns out that Dvorak was apparently not smoking crack when he predicted the Apple move, could he be right on this one too?"
Crack smokers often make insightful comments, yet they remain stoned. Almost everyone has made a prediction that Apple would switch to Intel. Dvorak just published his article at the right time.
If I remember correctly, he stated on TechTV that MorphOS would be huge, yet the number of people using it has only just reached a four figure number.
It is a pity that 9 people have lost their jobs. However, it is unlikely to have an impact in the long-term. The great thing about Linux is that it is so well supported by different organisations and certain aspects can be outsourced to other knowledgeable groups. Problems may arise if they cut further jobs and the outsourced responsibilities begin to splinter and fight among themselves.
I don't think so. The new trains use satellites to lock and unlock the doors. Unfortunately, a connection cannot always be made with the satellite and travellers have to wait a few minutes for them to open the doors. The driver usually blames poor weather conditions. Who would have that would be a problem in the UK?
Oh well, at least you can download stuff while you are waiting for the blasted things to open.
"I am using the hardware decoding which cancels out the ability to watch dvds on this box, but hey a p2 400 wouldn't handle that anyway."
How odd. I had no problem watching DVDs on a P2 300 5 years ago using WinDVD. I even bought a Creative hardware decoder, but could never get it to work correctly without it putting out a massive amount of interference (probably a dodgy card, I couldn't find the receipt to return it).
The ex-wife.
Wait! This is anonymous, right?

What about the Shadow vessel buried under the surface?
Dupes aside, are Slashdot editors paid on a Sunday? Do they get double time or do they work a 6 x days + 1 free shift.
For the record, I haven't seen the animation before so it was new to me.

*Yeah, yeah. Macs can use two buttons.

Excellent. I can rob a bank during the conference and make my escape. NO ONE CAN STOP ME! HA! HA! HA! HA! (Lameness filter encountered. Post aborted!)
*Ahem*

Good idea. A bit like Enterprise, but well written.

Can we call it a boombox?
Two questions:
1) How the heck did they persuade mice to eat a poisoned apple?
2) Where will they find a conveniently unattached prince?
Imagine the data loss when someone thoughtlessly dictates "Computer. End Program" into their speech recognition software and the disc ceases to exit.
