We all know this, but for those just tuning in : Moby latest album really sucks. I wish I could undownload it, what a waste of my NNTP byte-quota. It is just a blander version of 'Play'. Really he just got extremely lucky with the single 'Porcelain' which got him on the map.
He just ignores the golden rules of electronic music : solid rhythm and fat beats. Really his latest album should have been titled 'More money', because obviously with his whining that's all he was after. He must find it quite odd that lots of other artists who actually put huge effort into their music, are proud to know everyone's downloading their tunes because it is a better feeling to be 'loved' than to be 'paid'.
A need has formed for per-document geofiltering. Posting something that might offend those whoring Zimbabwe businessmen ? Then show it to everyone EXCEPT Zimbabwe surfers (let them use a proxy). If we can't fix the problem at the root, then we'll have to start by shutting it out. Same thing applies to China, and to some extend even Australia. If the governments aren't willing to learn about the Internet and its unwritten rules, then they will be silently ignored until they wisen up.
Nahh.. easy of quality pausing ? I don't think so. DVD works for the pr0n industry because of all the cheap kids who own a 60$ DVD player and no VHS. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it does represent a very early technology jump.
Just think back of the early 80's when audio CDs started hitting the market; lame cd players would cost 400$ and up, and the discs themselves were hard to find, but eventually gained popularity and eclipsed 4-track tapes. It took years for the transition to progress, and now if you're seen buying a music tape the clerks will be wondering where you've been living for the last fifteen years. But fifteen years ago if you were purchasing a CD, those same clerks (ok, their parents) were probably wondering where you got all the cash for a cd deck/discman, and pretty much everyone in the street would chat you up about your shiny cd player. Same thing's happening with video, right now we're somewhere in the middle, as DVD is well on its way to widespread acceptance in the home market.
Of course the pr0n industry has little choice but to follow the technology trends. Nowadays everyone wants 4-hour multi-angle ass-to-ass compilations with running commentary by the not-so-great Rocco himself, and since DVD discs are so compact, they can stuff more of them in the bottom dresser drawer underneath their socks.
Ahh.. that's one thing I like about living in a rough city. Even if you're an hour or two late (just not a whole day), they won't even bug you. Minimum-wage clerks prefer to just silently waive the late fee, rather than get violently shaken and yelled at:)
Microchip (the company) has a PIC that natively handles USB comms, I believe it is an enhanced 16F84-type chip. I haven't had any personal experience with this device but you might want to look into it. PICs are excellent for multiplexing simple i/o lines into a ready-to-interface stream.
Marc Maiffret, 21-year-old security prodigy and chief hacking officer for eEye Digital Security, doesn't fault old code for security problems. He said that programmers who don't review the code before using it are at fault. Old code may have more security holes in it, but those holes should be caught, he said
Okay, so they're interviewing a 21-year old who thinks he knows more about Microsoft's code than Microsoft itself. Yes it's true, in a perfect world we would all have infinite time to review legacy code and peek into shared libraries, but the matter of the fact is that fundamental reason we reuse code is to save time and effort. If we all spent our time rereading and retesting code whenever we glue it into something else, we'd be better off starting from scratch every time.
Ok, let me rephrase. I know they _can_ do it with money, but what about ethics ? I thought the whole point of ICANN was to have a "neutral" entity to handle domain name allocation and disputes, specifically so that no single US corporate entity could heavy-hand the system (at least to some extent).
Now we're going back to a bunch of scroogey morons running the internet ? Yay. It's times like this I wish I were a trucker.
My suggestion : just stick to a good mp3 playing head unit, and switch on the local radio when you want to hear a traffic report. If I were paying 10$/mo plus whatever hardware it needs, I'd expect commercial-free radio. The fact that these companies are so money-hungry leads me to believe they're not on stable footing and might fall under after a year or two.
If they're closing town the city, then the movie producers should be paying the CITIZENS, not city hall. It is the citizens that are being hindered by this filming, it is they who should be compensated for their trouble. And NO, free passes to see the flick don't count!
Install pressure-sensors all around the toilet bowl, that activate a pair of electrodes INSIDE the doorknob, in that little slit where a kid would usually stick his fingers or some small object to unlatch the door. That way, when someone's taking a dump, if a kid tries to unlock the door he'll get zapped, and after a few dozen zaps he'll just go out in the woods like the family dog.
As a safety feature, if some idiot kid locks the bathroom while nobody's in there, the pressure sensors will prevent electricity from killing you when you yank out the small key.
Even if you theoretically have 30 bandwidth kiddies downloading warez 24/7, they still each get approx 350kbit (50kb/sec). Compared to a noisy 56k running at 31200, I'd take the crowded wi-fi any day.
50$/mo ain't so bad for broadband, especially if it's direct from the commercial feed. You know they'll work double-time to keep that one up, unlike the residential crap.
Indeed, there's no better feeling than fighting a troll in D&D and imagining JonKatz yelling "First Columbine Post".. ahh, the satisfying crunch of a +5 Damroll.
People don't know role playing from fantasy. Fantasy is present in all the games you mentioned, but only Vampire is an actual RPG (the paper game, that is).
People see wizards and longswords and think "Hey this must be an RPG". Heck, some would say that Maximo (Ghosts and Goblins) is an RPG because it is in a medieval fantasy setting.
People should have to pass a test before gaining mod privileges. The only trollish part about my post was use of the word "goats". It's been 9 months since WTC and the gov't is still pissing cash all over the place WITHOUT EVEN THINKING.
Instead of hiring talented people and pay them a regular salary + benefits, they're going to ask everyone to pitch in with the promise of cash prizes. 100k ain't that much, considering they're going to be making millions by reprinting the winner's labor of love.
If I were a D&D fan and were to win this contest, I'd much rather win a full-time job at WotC writing more adventures (in addition to the one-time cash prize). I mean, if a guy can write 100 pages of good D&D documentation, he can probably do it again and again until he runs out of names for bad guys. WotC should see this and seize the opportunity, it would be much easier and safer than doing interviews and possibly ending up with an idiot that talks the talk but can't walk the walk.
David Letterman had better watch out, we're going to replace him with another clown sitting in front of another city backdrop, and we'll throw in Hanson to replace Paul Schaffer.
Will this Unbreakable OS be as 'unbreakable' as Oracle _was_ ?
Why not just strip off the candy-coating and call it WTC Whoring Linux ? With a big "rm/bin/laden" on the box cover. Security is very passé, as we all know how it works nowadays and any 14 year old with a few hours to spare can learn how to lock down his home network. We just need to get those kids out of McDonalds and into real jobs where they can make a difference.
What is it with these hotels ? The most I've paid for a hotel room is about 70$US, and it was exquisite (indoor pool/sauna, 5 minutes from the main strip). I know these things can vary wildly from one neighborhood to another, but even in big cities I usually find something quite nice around 40-50$.
I was actually hoping to visit the 2600 con this year, just for fun. When I saw the room prices I said "forget it!". For the price of a double occupancy room down there, I could afford a luxury suite in Toronto/Montreal. For crap's sake, I just need a bed to sleep on. I actually keep an inflatable mattress in my car as a last resort. I'd rather sleep in the hatchback than blow 1/3rd of my monthly rent for 6-7 hours of sleep, especially if I'm spending all my time at a convention, amusement park or other. Crazy ? perhaps... Cheap ? I think not, money certainly doesn't grow on trees.
One thing I like about some european conventions is when they reserve some camping space out in the great wide open. Bring a tent, sleep on-site, don't miss a single event. It's usually free with your con pass, or something ridiculously low like 10$. Best of all, you get to stay close to the others, so you can get together and play UT all night on your laptops, rather than isolate yourself in a huge hotel miles away.

- Would you like to play a game of chess ?
- No, I want to play global thermonuclear war. It's FREEZING down here!

What happens when your Browser-based bios pulls a segfault on you ? Unrecoverable system ?
"Independent newspaper", isn't that an oxymoron ? like "microsoft works" and "military intelligence" ?

This kid is a fast-talking idiot, nothing more.

No no no! You're so low-tech!

Now I can play gameboy on an Alpine 7" car LCD while driving in heavy traffic.
Mario Kart, anyone ?

The other mystery: why don't they make bigger NOS bottles for street drag cars ? =)
(offtopic, I know.. but I'm pretty sure a ride in the car would sufficiently shock any cardiac back to health - or just kill them swiftly)

Good lordy! If your high-school kids spend their days gang banging they're in the wrong high school!
