  1. I think the problem is a mis-naming on Vatican Rejects Intelligent Design? · · Score: 2, Interesting

A lot of people see evolution itself as "intelligent design:"

The Fundamentalists are saying that intelligent design is the aforementioned dude(ette) waving his arms and making everything wih one big POOF! Which is a nice way to explain things - if you're a little kid.

Its nice to see the religion of my youth stepping away from crackpottery a bit. I mean, sure, they're still fairly totemic (what catholic doesn't remember the hubub in church when a splinter of the cross came through on one of its tours) and they like big ceremony (but really, who doesn't?) and they think homosexuals are going to burn in eternal damnation forever no matter what; just give them a little time. it never seemed to me that Google ever bought into that dot-com silliness. There were no huge Super Bowl ads, there wasn't a lot of jumping up and down and arm waving and screaming "LOOK AT US! AREN'T WE COOL!?"

They simply made someting that worked well, and let people find their own use for it. Thats pretty much what they do with all their projets now. They build it, we find uses for it, they save a fat wad of cash not developing rediculous ad campaigns and trying to force "impressions of their brand" on us, yet they're the most recognizable internet brand out there.

Maybe these other corporations need to take a look at that - do something well and you don't HAVE TO make a bunch of noise to get people to notice you, because you'll be seen useful.

The movies have taught us one thing: the amount of insubstantial noise made over a film is directly proportional to its crappiness. I'm amazed how few people have learned that lesson yet.

Once this lesson is actually learned, the entire markeing/branding industry will go direcly into the shitter; but is that a BAD thing? Maybe those people can go get real jobs actually MAKING something of use.

I don't really see how you could call it a Trojan. People are saying that it's mentioned in the EULA, and thats disclosure of its existence. We now even know exactly what the Warden is doing, and its fairly innocuous. Now, if Blizzard flips out and sudenly grabs every online user's machine and uses it to start attacking Valve's Steam system, the that would be something worth bitching and moaning about.

Not to mention the fact that it would bring some real heat down on Blizzard.

Either way, the cat is out of the bag, and for the most part there's no real harm done beyond all of the frantic arm waving and yelling about "IT COULD POSSIBLY BE TRANSMITTING MY CREDIT CARD NUMBER ON THE NETWORK". Hell, it could possibly be finding naked images on your machine and building the biggest porn collection in the world for Blizzard, but that would hamper your speed and affect gameplay, so they probably arent doinig that.

The main thing here is this: If you dont want that shit on your computer, don't play the game.

If WoW's subscriber base goes in the toilet, you can bet they'll build a patch that yanks warden right out of the game, they you can rejoin only to qut in two months because chaters have spoiled yet another game, which will give you SOMETHING NEW to bitch about. Yay!

Another thing to consider - where are all the guys that have been playing things like Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat in VAC protectes servers? Or the guys that willingly use things like PunkBuster while gaming? I also agree that all of these measures will eventually be beaten, and that assholes will ruin multiplayer games wherever they go, but I'm glad they're in place to slow down the "casual" cheater.
