Counterintelligence. Same game, new enemy. It worries me when the enemies start to become ourselves. It may be foreshadowing what's to come.
True, and I first thought this would have been more effective if they hadn't announced it. I guess given that they know there is a leak, the ones you don't want to know would know anyway.
wake me when they have a working wii emulator for pi. Until then this is just something that's been done many times before on various other platforms. What makes it worse is the snes is so out of date that the real console with games and controllers sells for less than a raspberry pi in the first place.
It's pretty obvious what crimes he committed, he's not even denying it. However, he'll get a trial anyway because that's how the law works here. You prosecute people who have broken the law and put them in jail (or execute them if that's the appropriate punishment) if they are found guilty. What you don't do is say, oh.. you avoided arrest for a long time, it's ok now - we'll turn the other cheek. In part to punish the perpetrator, and in part to dissuade others from committing similar crimes.
I know it's not equal (I'm guessing roadrunner is more efficient in terms of flops/watt than the old computers that often are used for seti@home) but Roadrunner produces 1026 terraflops and uses 2.5 million watts.. So using that as a basis for comparison, seti@home is consuming 1,432,500 watts per second. Based on data provided by the EPA (http://www.epa.gov/cleanenergy/energy-resources/refs.html ) which reports carbon output as 6.8956 x 10-4 metric tons CO2 / kWh, seti is producing 3,556 metric tons of CO2 per second!
Yeah... I actually feel embarrased now that back in the late 90s, I actualy signed up for and used SETI@Home for a brief period of time. As the years have gone by, the service has just begun to seem like more and more of a joke. I don't even remember what year it was I came to the conclusion that it *was* pretty much a joke... maybe 2004-2008? Of course, I haven't touched SETI@Home since the late 90s, though, but the more I hear about it the worse it sounds. Over the years, I have also gone from wondering "does any other intelligent lifeform exist" to a more skeptical viewpoint, that it's all bullshit and made up by morons who have nothing better to do that spout bullshit.
Good riddance SETI.
I did roughly the same, and agree with your conclusion. Folks should just let the dying dog die. There are (many) vastly superior space related projects underway that might actually have interesting or useful results someday. Moreover, it's a project that encourages people to consume as much electricity as their computers are capable of. At scale, I bet SETI produces more carbon output than most coal power plants.
You're not kidding, especially since they have already been made and have been on the road since at least early 2010. Ford predicts something is going to happen several years after it has already happened. News at 11.
meh.. I live in Florida. About a mile from the Gulf of Mexico. 588cm above sea level. The expensive beach house owners might have to worry but much of FL will be just fine. Who knows, maybe someday my house will become a beach house!
Oh really? And cordoning off the "historic park" with barriers and shrink wrap with big "do not touch" signs isn't "narcissistic and selfish behavior"?
Free clue: These "historical places" aren't going to last forever, regardless. The world was put here for us to use and enjoy. No, somebody picking up a fucking rock from the ground in the Grand Canyon, or pulling a plant out of the ground in Yellowstone doesn't matter me a bit.
Pity, but you're not dead yet - there is still hope for you.
It's much more difficult if you want to run a router with modern features like Gig-E, wireless N, multiband, jumbo frames etc... I loved dd-wrt when I had a linksys 54g but that old beast was decommissioned from my home several years ago. Now I run a D-Link that supports all these things and was only $130 when I bought it... should be cheaper by now.
Largo, Florida. I can get wired broadband service from Bright House Networks, Verizon, Comcast, AT&T, Knology. There are several companies in my area that sell "wireless" to the house, and of course there is satellite based service. That is just for the line. I don't know about all of them, but several of these allow you to use their line and other companies for the ISP (the connection to the internet). So that's an option, too.
Pity that many folks don't have the choices they should have for high speed internet.
I don't see the problem with this. Firstly, I've not purchased a Windows upgrade for 13 years (NT->2K). Secondly, Windows 7 is supported until 2020 so it's not like you have to upgrade it. Corporate customers need not worry as their license agreements give them the new OS for no additional cost.
Pity you got modded down for making the reasonable decision rather than just blindly arguing because everyone should hate M$. If I were selling software, I'd take this tact too. Not that I'm a Microsoft lover in particular, but I figure if you're going to hate a company you should do it for the right reasons.. which in the case of MS I would describe as them abusing their monopoly to dissuade users and OEMS from using other software.
Adobe Photoshop has been able to do this for years. At least since CS3 (the first version I used). Might be of some value as an exercise in a programming class, I guess. The finished product, however, is just a copy of other software that already exists.
If my ISP were to throttle my service to a level below what I am paying them for, I would simply switch providers. They're not my parents, they're not part of the government. They either provide the service I'm paying for or I will go to a competitor and pay their competitor. I don't have to worry about being in breach of a contract because if there was one (which there isn't) then they'd be the ones in breach.
The only way we are going to stop the MPAA and RIAA is to take to the streets in mass, and not in some silly "occupy walstreet for no reason" type protest, either.
I've done some of this recently. First, I'd start with getting a GOOD inverter, true sine wave. Probably $500ish installed for something close to 1kw. It's a lot, but it's the heart of anything you plug into 110vac in your vehicle and some devices won't run on the cheapo square wave units that are available at wally world. Run some cabling through the walls and mount some 110vac jacks throughout. Once you have this done, you don't really have to make any special power consideration for anything you might use in the van. Even your cell phone could charge with a regular household charger if you so desired.
Second, I would not use the TV's that were mentioned. LCD panels for vehicles are dirt cheap (sub 100 for reasonable sized ones, use google) and they are already wired for 12vdc. Get one or more of those for your display. As for a computer, I'm still on the list for mine but as I understand it, the rasberry pi should make a perfect car pc, with 1080p out, not sure what the audio capabilities are specifically but it should be good. Get a wireless keyboard with touchpad or trackball and use that to control it... OR a touchscreen mounted on the dash.. those can also be had cheap.
Use the 110vac outlets to connect your gaming system if you desire one
An externally mounted 802.11 antenna or portable hotspot permanently mounted in a good location would also be great. If you go the 802.11 route, you can get high power DC 802.11 amplifiers and high gain directional antennas.. although they aren't what I'd all cheap.
If you don't want to do the rasberry pi, another choice is you can get an android phone or tablet device with or without cellular as long as it's got an HDMI output and use that pretty easily. Most devices I've seen with HDMI will output as high as 1080p, and of course they will play just about anything with the right software installed.
Thank goodness. Every app that I see on my iPhone that uses HTML to be portable suffers horrible performance. This includes FB, but also the iTunes store. Over the past few months, the iTunes store has become almost useless on my iPhone 4. FB was among the worst, but it did recently get much faster when they apparently upgraded their servers. It's still crap, don't get be wrong, but it's a good deal better than it was a month ago.
If you think lying is a morally un-praiseworthy activity (a negative of what we philosophers call morally sufficient), then you are rather near-sighted indeed.
The world is in a sad state if you or people in general believe that. There is something wrong with lying, there is nothing wrong with finding the act of lying to be objectionable. I'm not saying I've never done it.
That kind of attitude is one of the signs of a major failure in society.

You misunderstand. Apple tells users that this sharing of data is a feature, so it's not malware.
From what I understand, the search-from-multiple-sources is the Galaxy Nexus' reason for alleged infringement.
Yes, the Firefox awesome bar which searches your local history and online results is effectively being called into question.

ehrm. 3,556 per hour, not second.
Just to support what I'm talking about, SETI reports they are consuming 588Teraflops per second! Source: http://boincstats.com/en/stats/0/project/detail

Dealing with a known bug is considered less problematic than installing a new OS version
Everybody makes mistakes sometimes.

"And communists like to put those of the 1% that they don't execute into labor camps."
Frankly, we are not far from having the tech to do both.
Kind of like the nazis? Put people into labor camps and work them to death.
Don't the Brits use the standard system as well?
Twice.

Slashdot needs to lose the "news for nerds" tagline and adopt "reddit news from yesterday, today." instead.
Modded down for that? I thought it should be +5 insightful.
Don't smoke this grass.
