THAT is going to be the single determining factor. IF, when you were hired, there is ANY documentation indicating that during your time with the company, whether on or off the clock, all the code that you produce belongs to them, unless there was some kind of exemption, then you need to suck it up and move on. Of course, you can go the legal route. But you first may need to get a lawyer that will take the case AND tell you that you actually have a valid case.
It's possible. Think of it like this: If they have a warrant to search and seize your residence, then they can check everything that they have a warrant for. However, if you do not know where they keys are to something, then they would have to use their own resources to remove the locks. I think that the same principle would apply here. Most places won't have the resources required to crack certain levels of password protection. Rather than circumvent the technology by adopting a better system (as their is always a better system) then they feel it is easier to circumvent rights and require you to provide the keys...
First, people have done it before the advent of the internet and world wide web were popular. Of course, it has become so ingrained into our society that there are things that you might miss out on if you disconnect from the grid...
Second, my wife and I did that before the birth of our son. We did it for six months. We got rid of cable, internet, and cell phones and stuck with only a landline. Possible, yes. Inconvenient as all hell? Better believe it.
We wound up going back to all three and ditching the landline. Cable has better entertainment choices, especially adding in Hulu and Netflix. Internet adds tons of possibilities for reference, entertainment, news, etc.
Just remember, those above you in a company, may have a clause that indicates something along the lines of "As long as the company shows a profit, ANY profit, then you will receive your obscene bonuses..."
So, people are saying that Apple won't do something that would infringe on their income (re: iTunes). Others have said that they won't do something to screw over their userbase. The whole problem is going to be in the EULA that comes with iCloud and whether or not by accepting the EULA that you can have your files reviewed to see if they contain pirated material. Proving that you are in legal possession of copyright material will be YOUR responsibility, not Apple's. Factor in that RIAA probably realizes that more money is to be had from sales from Apple and that they have probably had some prior collaboration prior to iCloud. Otherwise, if RIAA pisses off Apple, could Apple not just say "screw it. We're closing iTunes store to all members of RIAA. Everyone can just download their pirated stuff for free." or they could offer a monthly rate that might screw RIAA over.
I think that the RIAA is not going to fight with Apple. Not that the RIAA is smart, they aren't. But, taking on Apple is kind of like SCO taking on IBM.
Are you kidding? The airlines will blame anyone they can in order to defer their incompetence unto another party, ESPECIALLY United.
The last thing that an airline wants is for the public to lose confidence in them, so they'll blame lulz or anonymous or the Chinese... whichever will get them the most sympathy from the public.
This is news? Isn't this the same as the US admitting the existence of Delta Force, Seal Team 6, or Area 51? I mean really?
Rah, rah, the Chinese have a "computer commando" unit... big freaking deal. A "blue" team the same as a US "red" team? Great, so it's a pen-test team, maybe with other duties. Like the US doesn't have anything like that in the government or private sectors...
/., it's too early to be wasting my time on this...
Well, this whole incident has reaffirmed my complete LACK of faith in Sony and any of their entertainment services. My son asks me daily if I have heard an update and I tell him. He just nods and guess what? He doesn't need his PS3... he's happy off playing Legos or riding his bike or watching TV or whatever...
Me, I couldn't care less. I'm sick of the speculation and hearing about how a corporation got completely self-confident and self-absorbed to where simple system updates were not done... I mean are they all running Window 95 out there??
So this is making me wonder... Sony claims that some "hacker group" called Anonymous, breached their security, hence the outage. Yet Anonymous, who has both made a claim to attack Sony AND has claimed their past attacks, is not claiming responsibility?
Any chance that someone over at Sony broke something and PR wants to blame it on a "hacker group"?
Doesn't matter - TFA states that you can deactivate it... we must all believe the general counsel for Apple as they would never the lead the public wrong...
If one is interested in making the change to management, especially in IT, first you have to identify the skills, experience, and qualifications within your company for similar management positions. If you meet these qualifications, by all means apply for positions, both within your company and outside of your company. During your reviews, let your superiors know that you are interested in making the transition to management and ask them what kind of route they took to get that position. Doing that allows you to subtly let them know of your desire to progress and it puts them at ease by having them talk about themselves.
Now, if you want to progress into a position outside of your company, you will need to make sure that you have identified management qualities that other companies look for and tailor your resume to those qualifications. One thing that you could that might help you out would be to simply open your own side business. This shows others that you know how to manage and run your own business (even if the business isn't IT related).
Progressing within a company, regardless of the size, can be a difficult thing. It is frequently said that it's not what you know, it's who you know or who you blow. So make sure that your friends at work are not the kind of people that are anywhere near being any kind of troublemaker or bad influence or on someone's shit list. That will keep from being promoted just as fast as you being a shithead.
I think this shoots them completely in the foot and that laws may be reviewed and have to be changed due to stupidity.
Factor in that I'm sure that once people really start hearing about this, they'll really see how greedy these jackasses are and take action... oh wait, nevermind.

I was thinking that the joke was NMCI (Navy/Marine Corps Intranet).
So the primary focus of most any company putting out a product is not to make a profit?
I'm thinking that you might need to re-think that...

Everything is debatable, given the right lawyer(s).

When their ban includes every existing programming language and these guys can't play their Farmville...
Except that a gesture used to interface with a touch screen is a process. It's a process to interface with the system.

Really? Define "secret" bases? Ones that someone on /. could claim to have worked at but cannot say anything?
Do some research and let the rest of us lazy folks know what you find...
Do they? What about Delta Force?

3) Take credit for success, blame the admin for failure. 4) Profit!
It's a damn shame that those forces (Navy Seals and CIA) do not get the $25 million reward or any other reward...
Hopefully they used bullets soaked in pig blood...

How many other countries have a deficit so large as the US to develop those secret spy planes?
I'm going to say "yes" to generate hits... Judging from what I have read from other posters, yeah, I'm not going to add to his hit count...

They are going to make him serve out his sentence in Gitmo? Or is he going to be sentenced to a prison that overlooks the base?
Bingo.
Some schools have a traditional CS degree and a CSE degree, both offered by the engineering department. Research a little before pursuing your degree.
Then, this pushes the argument back to the thread about schools/curriculum and business needs to be met and expectations...
