I have a kernel 2.4.16 + preempt patch.
It is the most stable config I ever had using this kernel generation.
I explain :
Before, with kernel 2.2.1x I only had "some" preformance issues (mostly disk access related) and what I thought were apm problems (this is a laptop).
Since I have been using kernel 2.4 I happened to have good times but mostly bad surprises.
pcmcia (I use the pcmcia-cs package) is not quite plug'n play (system even hanged once) but symptoms vary from version to version.
So, the big PROS is that, yes, I boot a much quicker way.
The CONS is that since the 2.4.6/7, I bitterly regret upgrading this kernel since the functionality I gained was compensated by the new bugs.
Note that I don't mention the APM because besides the Windowmaker apm applet, I don't even imagine using the suspend/resume on this laptop.
BTW, when I see the difference with and without the preempt kernel, I wonder why this is not implemented in the official tree (radio button : "server or desktop" ?).
I'm actually a little afraid of the Sony thing as it imho doesn't seem as easy to integrate under linux or others environments as the original thing (for example, I don't like this memory stick thing that looks it's here to force me to adopt a newer kind of yet unrecognized device under non-proprietary envts... The Sony spec also read "windows" and neither linux nor even MacOS[9X]).
One, month ago, Palm announced some forthcoming evolution (multitasking,e tc.) to their OS which seems quite promising since they actually bought Be...
So you mean you refuse to reckon you are wrong if the person that demonstrates it is not 100% clean itself?
Everybody should reckon their errors instead of just disclaiming their responsabilities and accusing something else.
If I am doing something bad and an idiot remarks it, then I'd rather repair my mistake (in this case, by either buying the software I use or switching to a 100% Free solution) before somebody eligible to kick my ass actually remarks it too.
So, this not a problem of legality but rather a problem of moral.
In France, the BSA had no legal presence (though they usually "spammed" people with their piracy-detection floppies and other funny letters.).
That's why an influent French Editor created an alternative organization : the Bidouilleurs Sans Argent which promotes the Free and/or free software.
Okay : let's put the subtitles as M.O.C. can't easily understand such an obvious point :
Tron was the very first movie featuring computer-generated-whatever-but-actors.
Remastering it would remove what made it especially interesting in these times : the bad pixels, the flanging voices, and others unwanted electronical artefacts.
Only the boring aspects of this film would remain, hence the above comment.
According to Wired, a belgian developer claims he had imagined and put on line a similar design for new iMacs some months ago.
This developer would like to know whether the new iMac is actually (deeply) inspired from his works or just a coincidence.
His query is interesting as he doesn't want to sue Apple (not his kind of sport, actually) but just to know more...
...They didn't explicitely mention Free Music mouvements, such as GNUArt.
Doing it for the pleasure instead of doing it for a living doesn't mean it's bad.
BTW, we have professional who gave us some of their songs (not all) which helped their fame propagate.
..."they" zipped their word files before sending them...
no way.
Acorn User will be happy to use !AntiWord to convert these into formatted text, at least. (BTW, it works on most platforms;-)
The price estimation you gave is the current one.
Now, if everybody consider doing this, won't the cost dramatically decrease to some more reasonable level ?
We should start thinking about mass-space-travelling so that price won't mater as much anymore.
Maybe our grand-children will be able to spend their honeymoon on the moon.
I know I sound a bit optimistic but if somebody had told our parents some people would walk on the moon, they wouldn't have believed it.
As the Open-Source person in a commercially successfull company, do you manage to actually have positive financial results or are you just working in order to advertise Sun's openness ?
How is your position perceived inside your company ?
Do you spend your time fight ing to get a budget ? Do your business plan includes the placement of Sun consultants in big companies ?
You wrote such an idiot comment that I felt I had to answer.
I live there and I observe on a daily basis their generous and friendly nature.
Famous Swiss include Henri Dunant (Red Cross) and Alex Julliard (Wine).
Actually there have been lots of studies made after the 2nd world wart and they didn't come to your diffamatory conclusion.
Believe it or not but the Swiss are just one of the most advanced democracy on Earth and the typical comments you seem to enjoy to repeat are mostly overhyped.
Yes, there have been a few Swiss idiots, but no : it is wrong to make these exceptions a generality.
No, get a plane ticket, travel around, meet foreign people and see for yourself instead of looking like a xenophobic ignorant.
By softsynth I meant "VST Native Instruments".
If you don't have at most a 5ms latency then you won't be able to exploit these in real time from either Cubase or Logic.
But I agree with you : This device may not be intended for the exiging musician.
It may be cool for either gamerz or MIDIcians but I am not sure a solution based on an external 12Mb USB link (IIRC) could bring the software synth user a decent enough latency to use some soft synth in real time with an external MIDI keyboard as a controller.
Pity, Creative web site didn't give this info in their specs.
A colleague of mine just traded his win2k/linux laptop for a 12" white iBook with MacOSX.
Though reluctant at first I have to say I was impressed.
In short, this is quite faster than what I expected after reading many comments, it is also cheap, has 5 hour battery life, an included DVD/CDRW drive, MSIE (like it or not, it is quite more functional as most other browsers and its only cons are : -1- it's Microsoft -2- it may still have backdoors)...
Now with Virtual PC or OfficeX it becomes an obvious choice for the hardcore multi-environment worker.
Mass-Porting Geek know they may quickly get some of their predilection Free Software up and running on this machine.
My personal favourite is Interface Builder which I have known for years...
So, this is both sexy looking and a seriously tempting alternative to other worl.
But no, it has nothing to do with a community but rather with a unique feeling/identity. The community is the consequence.
French Slashdotters may have heard about David Hirschmann. In short (if you don't like Fish) David Hirschmann was supposed to have some misconception of the corporate world which he shared with one of his female co-workers an inapropriate way. She then would have forwarded it around the Internet and at the end DH may have comitted suicide.
This got covered quite a lot by the French Press but finally appeared to be a hoax as no one of these protagonists actualy existed.
Now in this case I'd also tend to think that it may not be real...
I don't know people as stupid as this b.shifman that would have an internet connection.
There's something extreme here. it smells like comedy...

I personnally use !SmbServer under RiscOS in order to efficiently share some files and printers with Linux and Windows machines.
I just find it amazing and it IMHO has become a true protocol, much beyond its original Linux/Windows filesharing scope.
Thanks !
Most random generation uses bytes as their unit.
Now, what if they look for bit-sequences (not only 8-bit sequences but maybe odd numbers) in order to generate patterns ?
I guess this could be a way to significantly compress data but this'd imply a huge number of data read in order to achieve the best result possible.
Note they may also do this in more than one pass-through but then their compression thing should be really lengthy, then.
You may want to take a look at Magma's solution : an external box with pci slots that you'll connect to your laptop using the pcmcia ports. You maqy even put a scsi harddisc inside !
Whether you have a Mac or a PC, and assuming you are making techno/electro, you may want to take a look at Propellerheads' Reason. Another cheaper alternative is Fruity Loop.

I may wait a little and either buy some of these new devices or something totally different, yet exciting but pricier.
I am stuck with my 2.4.16 with the preempt patch.
It is damn' stable and quick so why should I change for a test kernel ?
So you mean you refuse to reckon you are wrong if the person that demonstrates it is not 100% clean itself?

purists don't want a remastered film !
Thbey want the original thing !

There will still be a need for cheap quick disk and memory as the cpu will have to deal a lot with these. I think 5 years is more optimistic.
