I am not a special education teacher, so pardon me if I don't know what a Level 10 Mental Handicap is. I suppose from the fact that he is 18 and can't read, the implication is this is extremely bad. However, most adult blacks cannot read or do basic math either. I think if the author had done more research, it wouldn't have come off so insensitive.
What you're saying is that we should use VeriSign to certify that we are getting the correct spyware?
I think the problem is that VeriSign certificates don't do much to begin with. Let's say I get a piece of software from UltraSoft Inc. Is it spyware or not? All the certificate tells me is that it's happening.
Which is something. But certificates look official and fool newbie users into the idea that they can now make an intelligent decision. If anything, at least the fake ones make it obvious!
What is the purpose of any technology company? To get bought by *.soft before they get copied by *.soft. In order to do that, you just have to come up with something that Chairman Bill doesn't want to pay his R&D dept to do themselves.
One compelling feature is all you need. Like the Tivo interface. If you keep going after that, youre just trying to compete with *.soft, starting at a huge disadvantage.
Its sad. The days of starting your own tech company are over. Now we are all just inventors. If youre pretty enough, maybe *.soft will notice you and ask you on a date!
Okay, good point. I think modern corporations (especially these ones) are smart enough, to remain similar enough to keep an oligarchy going. Like banks, software companies can consolidate with each other quickly, because not much of the business is physical.
From an innovation standpoint, it could be that all the failed companies died off before Google came up with the big one, which was PageRank. Now everyones definitely going to use that.

Are we the only people in this 400-message thread talking about News Corp? In that list of companies, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Although, if you read the article, it points out that several other the companies have no defined role in making this PC. I've got plenty of $100 PC's in my closet. You really dont need a consortium of giant companies to make a cheap computer.
If you know anything about globalism, the World Bank, etc. you know that exploiting third-world countries is the hottest game of the millenium. This may be just another example of that, a cheap techno-virus that carries News Corp's content to the masses.
Owning a word is indeed important. From these examples, yes, the Google name will probably remain dominant.
But let's look at the also-rans. Pepsi has the same ingredients as Coke, it was created to compete with Coke, its logo was ripped off of Coke, and since Coke decided not to buy Pepsi in the early part of the century, now Pepsi's mindshare and marketshare are about the same. They cost the same, they are packaged and distributed the same, they even almost taste the same.
So do they really compete with each other?
The other difference between Pepsi and Coke, is that Coke has slightly more restrictive licensing agreements with its customers. Because it tastes a little better, they have a little bigger dick.
So does it really matter who wins, Google, MSN or Yahoo? Is any of them more or less evil than the others, or just different flavors of the same soda?
The whole point of this CTRL-click discussion is that it's retarded. No matter how accustomed you are to ctrl-clicking in Photoshop, what are you going to do when you play a game?
If your left hand is busy pressing the ctrl key, and your right hand is busy clicking, what are you going to use to press the game's numerous hotkeys?
I would like to see the demo from 1984 where Steve Jobs introduces the Macintosh in black and white, three years after IBM released a consumer CGA card.
Also cool would be the demo from 1989 where Steve Jobs introduces the NextStep in monochrome, with no floppy drive, for $7000 per machine.
You know, it was about a month into my first web programming job when I realized that HTML is spectacularly ill-designed to do what we were trying to do with it - namely, to automate it (with scripts) rather than hand-code static pages. For example, try writing the code to auto-generate a selectbox. It's tricky, it takes about a half-hour, and it always feels like a hack.
Why is it so bad? Because there's no syntactic consistency in the interfaces to different commands, like SELECTBOX, TABLE, INPUT etc. On top of that, the browser implementations tend to suck. You have no idea how many web pages I've written that were composed almost entirely of FONT COLOR, because font color doesn't nest.
Five years later, they've created all kinds of new ultra-hyped languages, like XML, and web scripting is still just as broken as it ever was. So, I don't know if you were kidding when you said that HTML is "an awful markup language," but if you were referring to scripted implementations (which is 90% of the web these days), then you were absolutely right.
You mean LF vs CR/LF? Well, CR/LF has a higher resolution than LF, and was introduced later (Windows), so I would have to say that Unix needs to catch up and standardize to CR/LF.
It's true, though, that an ASCII character standard would be far more useful than XML;)
Quick refresher on how software works: Programs are invoked by other programs, or explicitly by the user. Programs do not run by themselves. When the operating system is re-installed, existing spyware becomes stranded and ready for garbage collection.
Spyware does not run after a system re-install. What, you thought it did? I can't stop laughing.
This press release says a lot about analyzing streams and nothing about altering them. Most of the weight of a database is in manipulating a permanent record. INSERTS are slow. Streambase may not have any.
Yes, and whats ironic is that the sensory overload of modern life is precisely what causes vision loss.
The only alternate theory Ive heard (back in high school) is genetic, which doesnt explain why vision loss is present in a majority of the population. Surely we didnt evolve this way in the past 2-400 years (since the invention of glasses).
In any case, human vision is more capable than that of many animals (nice troll). But rabbits dont watch TV, therefore, rabbits dont need to wear glasses.
Instead of worrying about whos on the clock or whatever, I have a better idea. The parcel service fleet can become GPS-enabled Asimo robots riding on the backs of hungry Mexican laborers.
Think of the savings. No more drivers, managers, cafeteria workers, truck mechanics, human resources staff. Just a couple guys from Sony and some beefy guys whipping the mexicans.
In the end, Big Brown saves money, which means YOU can have a better life.....

I recently stopped using Firefox because I realized, if the same people make Mozilla, and Firefox is better, then why do they still make Mozilla?
Because mozilla is better, thats why.
Yeah, Microsoft Antispyware is like KGB Personal Home Security. Exactly whom are they protecting me from?

Thanks, but your post is far too accurate to get modded up.
Yeah, or the blind person could carry a GPS system with voice output. Robotics implies mobility, which implies that a dog's mobility is not very good.

He also wouldn't have lost any spyware...
Having spent two days disinfecting the system, I broke down and reformatted the hard drive. I then reinstalled Windows XP and all its patches.
It took just 90 minutes.
Not reformatting the hard drive would have been faster, and he wouldn't have lost any data.
CableCard's first function--and arguably its most important--is to prevent people from stealing cable TV.
GREAT....
CableCard is meant to replace set-top boxes. But it does not yet replicate all set-top box functions.
FASCINATING.

Yeah no shit they gave them laptops. What do you think, they ripped open the wall of the shuttle and put in a plasma TV and an Alienware system?
If you didnt know that Microsoft makes an alternative to XP called Windows Server 2003, now is your time to find out.
It is the most no-nonsense version of Windows I've seen since 2000, perhaps more so.

Hey everybody, lets help IBM make money.
We get nothing for it? Sounds awesome. I cant wait to stay up all night working on this!!!
