Here's a suggestion, don't use an arcane mechanical form of logic as an explanation. I design digital logic in chips for a living and this confused even me.

It sounds like you're just implementing a counter with a 4 bit register to decode the hour. The value input to the register is either the current value plus one or 0 if the current value is 4'hB (or 0xB for software guys). This is literally a 4 bit register, incrementing adder, comparator and a mux or two. Draw a block diagram of that and people will understand a lot better, although it won't be as exciting because this is really just a tiny "circuit" which has nothing to do with a CPU. There's no fetch, decode, memory etc.

Re-label as: interesting project implementing simple ASIC using mechanic parts. I thought the most interesting thing about it was the flip-flops that actually flip-flop.

I'm not sure why investing instead of paying your low interest debt gives you more disposable income or work/housing freedom. If anything I would think it's the opposite.

As far as the house being a "sure thing" (assuming you mean it's tangible and insured), that isn't worth as much when you still have to eat etc. You need an income, and in tough times investment principle is probably better to take from than a refinancing (good bye low, fixed interest rate).

The benefit is for people who work or do whatever close to home. If your work is within 15 miles (mine is) you could potentially never use gas for a given week. Even if you needed to do some errands, 35 miles is decent just for tooling around your neighborhood. Never using gas is a huge plus. The only joke is the initial price. If you can overcome that, the prius has got nothing on it for the majority of driving time. 35 * 365 is about 13000 miles per year which is pretty reasonable (a little lower than average I think).

The fact that it's a 1 Mbps line is implied. Unlimited means that they *won't* throttle you. Saying you can only use your ~1 Mbps for the first GB and then 200 Kbps after that would not be unlimited anymore. Essentially the term unlimited is relative, but no one would agree that unlimited data at 1 Kbps is really "unlimited".

  16. Re:resonate clock mesh on AMD's Piledriver To Hit 4GHz+ With Resonant Clock Mesh · · Score: 1

What strikes me as the biggest problem with this isn't finding a strong resonant frequency, but building a small enough inductor with high Q. The inductor has to be small since the resonant frequency is fixed and the capacitance of an entire metal layer is huge (mesh or not). Q scales with inductance, and if your Q is too low then it's going to require a lot more energy to keep the thing resonating and you're not going to get much out of your "resonator".

This is also completely disregarding the added expense of using up a metal layer or two (or three) to support a clock mesh. This directly impacts placement density (transistor count) due to the decreased routability. TFA seems to just blow this off with the claim of an IC being pad limited (so what has this Moore's law business been about?).
