you can walk into a "head" shop around any campus and buy plenty of items which "could" be illegal, and I believe that if you mention to the store owners that you intend to use their products for non-legal uses, then they're not suppose to sell it to you. who puts tobacco in those fancy things anyway?

what about those "legal" cable tv boxes? we're all aloud to own our own cable box right? we don't have to rent the box from the local cable company. i guess if i don't buy my digital cable box from a company who advertises that i could use it to descramble copyright material, then it's ok?

if i walk into compUSA and tell the sales clerk i'm going to use the new CDRW drive i'm buying there to make mass copies if all my friends music/data cd's, should they cancel the sale?

how about when i tell the auto salesman that i plan to be driving 90 mph in the car he's selling me?
at what point does my intent, or the sellers intent on the sale make the sale illegal?

i also don't understand the pricing. for 400$ one could get an athlon 1.2 gz system, ith all the same other specs (probably more RAM than what's in those boxes to boot). add another 100$ and you've got yourself a decent 17" monitor. to me, the cost savings don't outway the benefits. most people would be bored with that appliance in a few months, and probably have to chuck it.

what's the big deal if i can take a name/birthday and find your address (if you're a registered voter in NY City) i could just as easily look it up in the phone book without even knowing your birthday. my real worry is the two faced court system. where in one case it's legal let unauthorized people distribute electronic copies, while in another it's not.

as to your point about the older music nearing public domain, it's my understanding (please correct me if i'm wrong) that the copyright has to be older than 70 or so years to enter public domain, and that congress keeps pusing that amount every time disney requests an extension. from that respect, music from the 1940's has not entered the public domain yet! i would say that's quite a gap in history. weather the record companies want to protect it or not is another thing. i'm sure the sound track to the wizzard of oz is not something they would like to be traded publicly, althought it's certainly a part of american history.

i think that in the same sense that these articles are being required to be online because the public needs to have access to them (although only through a provider that doesn't have a legitimate right to publish electronic copies), that music and other media forms including movies should be required to be available to the public online (and by the same regards, by an entity that doesn't have a legitimate right to publish electronic copies).
