Fun Reading Assignment: http://www.newyorkslime.com/bush-new-constitution. html
In 2025 I suspect that some CS/IT professor will be delivering a technology history course entitled "The Dark Ages of Data".
Start comments, something like this: "The Dark Ages of Data" occurred due, we suspect [after review of data forensics and recent anthropology thesis/studies on available period information] to a total lack of prescience in industry and government on the impact of private special interest policies and laws (RIAA, DMCA, PA-1/2,...).
The proprietary OSD [Original Software Developers], Copyrights and Patent laws, competing formats (even today in 2025 there are old data file formats that cannot be opened without developing a special application) and storage methods, extremely poor and proprietary archival tools/applications/file-systems; also, a total disregard for adherence to reasonable standards.
Encryption technology and biometrics had no consistence in application across businesses, governments, and institutions. There was no legal requirement for an encryption master-key to be maintained by a corporate and government agencies to decrypt information of employees and agencies for providing task continuity (in case of dismissal, death, accident,...) many criminal/news investigations were impossible and quickly dropped due to lack of evidence and/or no unencrypted information available, and just to expensive and time consuming to decrypt data (of questionable value) by code-cracking. Special interest dictating laws on technology and society rather then elected governments and technology professionals, all these things contributed to the decades of "The Dark Ages of Data".
Now may be the best of times for corporate and government criminals, because they can destroy evidence with the click of a mouse button, and encrypt corporate-personal secrets for accomplices eyes-only.
Good point, I agree, it is normal for most citizens of a capitalist republic to equate "loss of property" with "loss of life" as justice. This is why I said; "wrongs committed are life's little lottery games that you can collect on and should collect on to support the legal profession and win half the money." I do not agree with such a profit/greed justice system, but it appears to satisfy the sense of justice for many in the USA public fixated with "Reality TV" programs. The PA-103 terrorist attack was settled for money, because it appears it is not good international business to seek justice with imprisonment and/or death for murders. To some degree, post 9-11, it appears that one day the families of the victims will be forced to settle with the Saudi government and royal families/relatives.
Also, improperly secured covered the point reasonably, but due to your comment... My weapons remain under two locks, unless they are being transported by me personally for appropriate purposes, to a range, or for sporting events. I never store ammo and weapons in the same location, ammo I keep under different locks and keys, except when my weapons are loaded for appropriate use/task/activities.
I do not consider this to be unreasonable/unrealistic for responsible adults.
God Bless America, it is the American way. Hold those responsible for committing a criminal or murderous act for trial and maybe jail (unless they're politicians, CEOs, or rich kids with music, movies, TV, and/or video games excuses for murder), but accept that wrongs committed are life's little lottery games that you can collect on and should collect on to support the legal profession and win half the money.
Most good religious folks would do the same, I mean how much are you going to get out of a kid in jail or a parent that is so stupid as to leave weapons available for use by kids on themselves, parents, and others.
Some folks, like me, want to see the (children's' parents) owners of the improperly secured and loaded weapons used go to jail for 5 to 10 years. I believe, it would help over the long-run
Biometric Encryption Thingamajigs (BET) cards, pins, chips,... would be great, but dang there ain't no frick'en standards. Guess how many BETs would be on your key-ring and/or in your wallet/purse.... Yep, that's right maybe as many as your passwords.
Each credit card company will require you use theirs, each business/agency/... and maybe departments will require that only theirs be used for this da-dumb location/job, you banks do not want to use the same BETs as your brokerages, the city/county will want their own BET for property taxes/..., the state and federal will require different BETs be used for driving, travel, airlines, passports,....
I guess, more piss-poor-planning before it gets any better. We may as well continue with passwords, because it won't cost anymore and BETs won't help the situation improved anytime soon.
I agree "Because placing the master key for something outside of the control of the entity for which it's intended to be used weakens the system tremendously."
I strongly agree, the entity (business, government, private citizen) should retain the "Master-Key", but they (CEO, CIO, or CTO) should be legally (they must decrypt) and criminally (they may attempt to obstruct justice) held responsible when documents needed for an investigation are made unavailable on a valid ruse.
The ruse being: (1) that person no longer works here, (2) we updated all our encryption products and lost access to the data purported to exist. (3) There is no discoverable/readable/searchable proof that such a document ever existed, (4)....
I like my personal PGP PKI keys, but if I (private citizen with private key) tried to prevent access to information required for a criminal investigation, then I would go to jail (obstruction of justice and contempt of court) until I provided (unencrypted) access to the data.
I am not sure, but it looks to me like information that may be needed by the public and/or justice system may vanish when it is critically needed.
So, I do not want to weaken the encryption tools/methods. No business, agency, institution should trust another with internal security. However, business, government, and institutions corporate officers/bosses need to be held as accountable/responsible for their (employees, sub-offices,...) encrypted data as the private citizen. They get paid the big-bucks and are the responsible parties in organizations.
Wow, the human double-helix simple and beautiful has 4 base-chemicals, about 3B base-pairs which make about 30K to 40K genes. Could humans be more complex than the universe?
Anyway, Calabi-Yau spaces gets my vote. If I cannot understand the conditions, situations, and repercussions... it is still okay to vote in the USA, as a mater of fact preferred by most all politicians and corporate boards.
I still suspect an elegant simple structure/definition to the universe will evolve from all these strings and dimensions. It will not diminish the complexity of the universe. Using math to describe a double-helix may be superficial, but it did have great value in understanding/explaining interesting aspects about the structure. Maybe... it will be exposed little by little... the simple stuff first to build the...?
I see this being used in corporate law departments to cover-up/control questionable (maybe illegal/unethical) business/government practices/processes documents.
I keep asking about, why are corporate and government agencies not legally required to have a "Master-Key" for agency/business encryption technology. Today any CEO/CIO/whoever could say... I don't know how/who encrypted those files, email,... the encrypted information cannot be relevant to this criminal or national security investigation by the justice department or FBI. I think it would delay an investigation long enough for someone to skip country or scheme a better cover-up.
What/Where are the Open Standards for file formats?
MS-BMP, XLS, PPT,... will all go away as more people get tired of doing repeated additional task to access/convert data into a more open standard transportable, usable, and shareable word-processor, spread-sheet, database,... format.
We should THANK MS-Gates for pushing people to choose appropriate file formats. If I always send folks text and HTML formatted documents that they can all read, edit, use, and share, then I am always requesting that they (family, friends, colleagues,...) provide files in readable , editable, usesable, and shareable text or HTML format.... I think, the extra money to MS-Gates and needs for common shareable open file formats will push many to use applications (that create common file formats) that maybe will not be MS-Gates' Proprietary Products and Formats.
I am at the point that the stupid business decisions of Microsoft will have little or no impact on me or others.
If MS-Gates does not provide an easy to use and install viewer for my PC+OS, then I will not read what someone sends me in MS-word. I think for my family, friends, and business associates we can go back to text-email and use HTML for formatted text documents. As more software applications use open standards file formats... forget MS-Gates OS and then the applications. They are cutting their on throat (I am happy).
Really, I concur (look at the last 100 years)... something big will happen within the next fifty years and cause my death at a very old age (not much wasted). Many can see this coming, but don't expect Capitalist to support changes those that rule never want change. The government won't notice until it is to late to address sanely, expect the government to respond to problems by significantly increasing whoops (RIAA, DCMA, TIA, PA-1/2) and tragedies (what did we do for the Enron and... unemployed/retirees). What I see now, we are probably fucked (Okay, I am known for being paranoid and pessimistic (PP). I hope I am wrong, but it depends on US and EU making some major changes to help all humanity (Yep, we're fucked).
If the ruling class remains the wealthy greed motivated International Capitalist Republic, then there may be a war of extermination to diminish the global population of unneeded carbon based organic labor resources/units.
Robotic units will be self-replicating and relatively inexpensive to produce when total cost are amortized for a robotic unit life-cycle.
Human units are self-replicating, but considering support requirements (development, education, health, retirement,...) for a lifecycle, why would any member of the Capitalist Republic accept the burden/waste. Capitalist Republic members have the liph3 N |)34+h virtual-power that is granted by current human societies, laws, government,... and proportionally enhanced and accounted for by wealth/possessions/positions.
The future potentially hold nothing of value for most humans. Sanctified Suicide, by the wealthy religious of the Capitalist Republic, will significantly assist in the reduction of excess human resources, because taking weak-wasteful others to heaven (with your explosive exit) as your slaves will be praised as granting sainthood and/or great rewards.
We do not have a society/culture that would use robots to improve the quality of life and human condition. Education, Learning, Survival,... would just cost to damn much to benefit the greedy delusional megalomaniacs that would rule the world.
. They need to learn. Also, campus networks and admin need to help them recognize HW/SW/Security problems, avoidance skills, and good maintenance habits. . The MS approach of do-it-My (My=Gates/Microsoft) way is very dumb, because it does not provide experience for the future. DO NOT SPOON FEED the grown child, help them mature. Create a network that impacts upon their personal computers' performance with switch-restricted bandwidth access. Use switches to switch-blade-hubs that limit bandwidth access and/or the total hourly, daily, a/o monthly data transfer allowed. . Gamers would be the first to clean up their machines/software after a DHCP server reassigns an abused (due to DDOS Trojan running a flood-ping) IP address back to the available pool and they need to log-on again to play the LAN/Web-game. . Okay, this is an odd one for me, but [PLEASE!] find a way that puts the responsibility on the student to learn how to properly maintain their HW/SW/Security.... Maybe provide free evening courses in the dorms provided by the university/college CS-students (paid by the university). HELP FOLKS LEARN..., it is a waste and mistake to take care of all the problems for them. Maybe CS at MIT will put something up on the MIT-OCW website (http://ocw.mit.edu/index.html) for all US to use.
The first six (below example) clearly support the users and enterprise. The enterprise requires the first three (1, 2, 3) the users/bosses frequently do not notice; Therefor, in the offices (bosses and worker-bees') 4, 5, and 6 will win more friends and influence people. Expect IT/IM/IS/TA folks that exclusively support the top priorities (1, 2, 3) for an enterprise to be invisible to bosses/management until there is a crippling problem and/or financial problems that require cutbacks (payrole) in the business.
Also, as implied, there is a high probability that an X-Helpdesk all-knowing guru will be your boss, because they made friends in the offices that could influence promotions.
Build a Support Priority-List (SPL):
Priority-1: Critical Services Systems Crash/Lockup/Outage/....
Example: External/Internal Enterprise Communications and Process Systems
Priority-2: Critical Systems Software a/o Hardware presenting anomalies....
Example: H.323 VTC Application (Voice, No Video) a/o Thrashing Ethernet card.
Priority-3: Critical Systems Security (Internal/External) for folks and things.
Example: Business/Network Access Control, IDS, Forensic, HW/SW Config/Update.
Priority-4: Nice to have, but not needed, required, critical,....
Example: Desktop media player problems, MSOS killed blue-gun in the CRT,....
Priority-5: All office administrators, Whoever hires/fires or is their pet-rock.
Example: Secretary, Admin Assistant, Their Boss, The Boss's gopher(yes-head).
Priority-6: Setup automated "Helpdesk" ticket system for enterprise support.
Example: None Needed, This should already be a fact.
Priority-7: Always collaborate with company folks on initial creation of an SPL, keep it current stuff always changes, include management in setting priorities, have them sign-off as if/on company policy now controls your actions. This allows you to say (?no?) yes for when it fits within the company priorities, mission, policy,.... Okay, now go make something up for them. Remember good management/bosses like presentations with bullets... keep all the paragraphs to yourself (well) until you have a company policy statement the bosses/CIO/CTO want to sign-on for good business reasons.
Present SPL to management/CIO/CTO for edit/recommendations of what systems, devices, services, items should be at which priority. Sometimes IT/TA is not aware of the critical business relationships of everything involved for the enterprise. An enterprise subordinate (internal) "Helpdesk" [present to local director/boss] has a much more narrow focus to the office/division local users and services, no control/responsibility of external communications and/or enterprise systems/services.
Vivid hallucinations that would induce an altered-state of consciousness allowing a perception of reality different from my own or yours', there would be no inconsistencies for the observer of the reality, and no room for skepticism of their/our belief of the reality.
Therefor, for us all including me and you, " Reality is a self-induced hallucination." PLEASE (as I do), always consider that the other perspective/perception is not a threat and may have validity for our own reality.
You're right, but it is hard to break old habits when you're 50+.
I use text more frequently then html, because for me typing a url is as more a habit then writing a hyperlink for some text. I usually keyboard select the url alt-tab to another running browser/app then paste+[cr].
Back about a couple/few years ago I made a little html template that I could just hot-keys insert before and after appropriate html for the paragraph... the rest was concrete html text. Now and then I used it, but lost it, because Microsoft OS Win3.1 had a senior moment forgot where anything was on the harddisc and that was on of the few unrecoverable. Since then I have done a little html, but I never keep anything but references and links to W3C and... whatever.

Biometric Encryption Thingamajigs (BET) cards, pins, chips, ... would be great, but dang there ain't no frick'en standards. Guess how many BETs would be on your key-ring and/or in your wallet/purse .... Yep, that's right maybe as many as your passwords. ....
Each credit card company will require you use theirs, each business/agency/... and maybe departments will require that only theirs be used for this da-dumb location/job, you banks do not want to use the same BETs as your brokerages, the city/county will want their own BET for property taxes/..., the state and federal will require different BETs be used for driving, travel, airlines, passports,
I guess, more piss-poor-planning before it gets any better. We may as well continue with passwords, because it won't cost anymore and BETs won't help the situation improved anytime soon.

Martin,

...) encrypted data as the private citizen. They get paid the big-bucks and are the responsible parties in organizations.
(3) There is no discoverable/readable/searchable proof that such a document ever existed, (4)
However, business, government, and institutions corporate officers/bosses need to be held as accountable/responsible for their (employees, sub-offices,

Wow, the human double-helix simple and beautiful has 4 base-chemicals, about 3B base-pairs which make about 30K to 40K genes. Could humans be more complex than the universe?
Anyway, Calabi-Yau spaces gets my vote. If I cannot understand the conditions, situations, and repercussions
I still suspect an elegant simple structure/definition to the universe will evolve from all these strings and dimensions. It will not diminish the complexity of the universe. Using math to describe a double-helix may be superficial, but it did have great value in understanding/explaining interesting aspects about the structure. Maybe

I see this being used in corporate law departments to cover-up/control questionable (maybe illegal/unethical) business/government practices/processes documents.
... I don't know how/who encrypted those files, email, ... the encrypted information cannot be relevant to this criminal or national security investigation by the justice department or FBI. I think it would delay an investigation long enough for someone to skip country or scheme a better cover-up.
I keep asking about, why are corporate and government agencies not legally required to have a "Master-Key" for agency/business encryption technology. Today any CEO/CIO/whoever could say

I think, the extra money to MS-Gates and needs for common shareable open file formats will push many to use applications (that create common file formats) that maybe will not be MS-Gates' Proprietary Products and Formats. ... forget MS-Gates OS and then the applications. They are cutting their on throat (I am happy).

As more software applications use open standards file formats

Really, I concur (look at the last 100 years) ... something big will happen within the next fifty years and cause my death at a very old age (not much wasted). Many can see this coming, but don't expect Capitalist to support changes those that rule never want change. The government won't notice until it is to late to address sanely, expect the government to respond to problems by significantly increasing whoops (RIAA, DCMA, TIA, PA-1/2) and tragedies (what did we do for the Enron and ... unemployed/retirees).

Human units are self-replicating, but considering support requirements (development, education, health, retirement,

Sanctified Suicide, by the wealthy religious of the Capitalist Republic, will significantly assist in the reduction of excess human resources, because taking weak-wasteful others to heaven (with your explosive exit) as your slaves will be praised as granting sainthood and/or great rewards.

Dear People,
.... Maybe provide free evening courses in the dorms provided by the university/college CS-students (paid by the university). HELP FOLKS LEARN ..., it is a waste and mistake to take care of all the problems for them. Maybe CS at MIT will put something up on the MIT-OCW website (http://ocw.mit.edu/index.html) for all US to use.
Use switches to switch-blade-hubs that limit bandwidth access and/or the total hourly, daily, a/o monthly data transfer allowed.
. Gamers would be the first to clean up their machines/software after a DHCP server reassigns an abused (due to DDOS Trojan running a flood-ping) IP address back to the available pool and they need to log-on again to play the LAN/Web-game.
. Okay, this is an odd one for me, but [PLEASE!] find a way that puts the responsibility on the student to learn how to properly maintain their HW/SW/Security

Dear Ummagumma,
....
.... ....
.... Okay, now go make something up for them. Remember good management/bosses like presentations with bullets ... keep all the paragraphs to yourself (well) until you have a company policy statement the bosses/CIO/CTO want to sign-on for good business reasons.
... [the end]
Priority-2: Critical Systems Software a/o Hardware presenting anomalies
Example: H.323 VTC Application (Voice, No Video) a/o Thrashing Ethernet card.
Priority-3: Critical Systems Security (Internal/External) for folks and things.
Example: Business/Network Access Control, IDS, Forensic, HW/SW Config/Update.
Priority-4: Nice to have, but not needed, required, critical,
Example: Desktop media player problems, MSOS killed blue-gun in the CRT,
Priority-5: All office administrators, Whoever hires/fires or is their pet-rock.
This allows you to say (?no?) yes for when it fits within the company priorities, mission, policy,
Present SPL to management/CIO/CTO for edit/recommendations of what systems, devices, services, items should be at which priority.
Rather than bore y'all further

Anon,
Thanks for observing the obvious, I think?
Vivid hallucinations that would induce an altered-state of consciousness allowing a perception of reality different from my own or yours', there would be no inconsistencies for the observer of the reality, and no room for skepticism of their/our belief of the reality.
Therefor, for us all including me and you, " Reality is a self-induced hallucination." PLEASE (as I do), always consider that the other perspective/perception is not a threat and may have validity for our own reality.

Total,
... the rest was concrete html text. Now and then I used it, but lost it, because Microsoft OS Win3.1 had a senior moment forgot where anything was on the harddisc and that was on of the few unrecoverable. Since then I have done a little html, but I never keep anything but references and links to W3C and ... whatever.
/.
You're right, but it is hard to break old habits when you're 50+.
I use text more frequently then html, because for me typing a url is as more a habit then writing a hyperlink for some text. I usually keyboard select the url alt-tab to another running browser/app then paste+[cr].
Back about a couple/few years ago I made a little html template that I could just hot-keys insert before and after appropriate html for the paragraph
