The G4 design was total crap. We have three of those at work and all the arms are going weak and each of the users has trouble finding a suitable place for it on their desk. It's aukward and mechanically weak. And the optical drive is in a lousy location - open into the keyboard? WTF!

It just seems like common sense to me.

Well, I'm voting for you. Still hate election years? ;)

But seriously, communicating with your kids is absolutely the right thing to do. And it's something you have to do consistantly from the very beginning. Teach them right and wrong, know what it is they're interested in and what their hobbies are. Don't keep tabs on their every move, just be aware of what they're doing.

There are overlaps, definitely, but on the whole the two markets don't overlap. And maybe that's just my own standard biased view point, but this just seems like a classic bully situation. 11. Re:Do you have to buy someone? on HP to Acquire Voodoo PC · · Score: 1

Don't forget the cost of a high definition television to go with those consoles, and more than likely some kind of receiver / amp for the audio. Even if you already had them, they're part of the cost of playing console games at the same quality you get on a computer.

I think consoles are great, and they've come a long way to meet the 'game-ability' of a personal computer, but the PC still plays games the best. With things like updates, patches, add-ons, mods, and hacks, there are so many reasons to play games on a PC. The only short comings I think of right away are that you are sitting at a computer desk rather than in the TV room, and the general lack of a controller for games that don't play well with keyboard and mouse. But in contrast consoles rarely support keyboard and mouse for games that play so much better with them.

I think 'gaming PCs' have a market, and yes you are right that it's small, but I don't think that consoles are really killing off the gaming PC. People who are going to spend a couple grand on a rig to play Half-Life 2 aren't going to buy a console instead. They're going to buy the PC and if the console is appealing they'll probably buy it too.

I can see those students having a problem with that, after all it is your work and you don't really want others to keep hold of it while checking. It's like turning up to an airport, handing your mobile over for them to check it wasn't dangerous, and then them handing it back to you after copying your phone book and all of your messages off of it.

I think this is very different. In the work environment all the work you do belongs to the company you do it for. I believe school projects can be treated the same way - it is with research projects. So technically the student has zero say in what is done with their work. It belongs to the school.

Frankly I think this is a good idea. It makes students actually be original and creative, applying what they've learned to actually accomplish what their professors have asked for, rather than copying someone elses work. Furthermore it provides a common database of reference papers. They could turn it into a huge Wikipedia type database with hundreds of thousands of contributors. And the documents would actually have legitimate references!

Where I agree that it's rediculous that the voltage is different (breaking the standard?), there are places that rechargable AA batteries work well. A/V remotes, wireless computer devices like mouse / keyboard, and some childrens' toys. It's when you stack up six or more batteries that there is a problem. I've been using Energizer rechargable AA batteries for a while and if I can keep other people from throwing them away it's generally a good investment. I even use them in my Nikon N80 (with extended grip and AA converter attachment) and they work great, even 1.2 volts short.

  23. Re:The Perils of Today's Console on Xbox 360 adds 1080p Support · · Score: 2, Interesting

The primary problems is that games for consoles usually are only made for that console for about 3~4 years. So the price drop on 1080p displays has to drop in that time frame to give me a bit of time to enjoy it.

I was going to make my own parent post but you pretty much summed it up already so I'm just going to bandwagon.

A secondary problem I see is that consoles are consoles. They're supposed to be a standardized unit in which I can assure myself that everyone is having the same playing experience. This seems to no longer be true with the different models of Xbox360 or PS3 they are planning. And, frankly, it turns me off a bit. Is it a good thing that consoles are becoming more like computers? And if it is, why aren't we just buying a special USB controller from these companies and running everything on our computers?

I've not done any research lately, but with other advancements surely it's on its way. What I'm talking about is a Linux based 'console' distribution that runs on a PC. Take a DVD, smack a super trimmed down bootable Linux image and a game on it. Throw it in a PC and you're gaming. Create hardware standards that the disk checks for during boot. At certain intervals the standard could be increased. Now you have a decent 'console' system without the detriment of selling hardware units at a loss. I dunno, maybe I'm crazy, but it seems like an idea worth kicking around.

I would imagine that most people can't comprehend that someone would lie to them, for any reason at all, or no reason at all. Or they're just really damn gullible. So simply asking them to flex their brain and not take everything for face value flat-out will not work. They are incable, mentally, of being a skeptic and self educating.

  25. I do not approve. on Katamari Damacy - A Critique · · Score: 1

-- Maybe this is all Takahashi thinks is going on, or perhaps this is all he wants the critic to believe is going on, but the truth is, there is so much more - to not only this game, but every work of art out there, waiting for the viewer to unlock.

If the artist claims there is nothing else going on and the viewer insists that there is something else going on is it not possible that the viewer is creating hidden meanings to fulfill their own desires? Making something of nothing?

-- The critic then misses all the subtleties, the deeper meanings, completely ignoring the work of art itself in the most extreme cases.

At this point the critique is no longer a critique. It is now its own piece which simply references a work in order to provide its own existance. It has lost the plot.

-- For example, in terms of Katamari Damacy, the King of All Cosmos talks in record scratches because the player, the mere mortal, could never understand the words of a god. The text is laid out of what he's saying for the player only because the Prince, who the player is playing as, his son, a demigod, can understand him.

Or maybe it's because the game was done on the cheap and they didn't want to record audio tracks for all the languages - maybe they just wanted to do text.

-- The weirdness of the words spoken by the King (and the majority of the other characters in the game) could be boiled down to bad translation, but in a game that's this deep, there's no way. Some of the dialogue will be discussed below in relation to other schools of thought.

    He's - rolling - a - ball - around. Sooooo deep.

-- Again, those were just two small New Critiques. An exhaustive list would be near-impossible to compile and then put back together again to create a deeper meaning for the work, for there are just far too many things that are part of the overall package of a video game.

Exactly, you are fabricating a deeper meaning which did not exist before you began your critique.

The author of the critique did the work claiming game critiques have never been done. I say even after this piece of work a game critique still has never been done.

Review - a general survey of something, esp. in words; a report or account of something
Critique - a criticism or critical comment on some problem, subject, etc

What the author has created here is neither. It is in fact a fabrication of hidden meanings, non of which were intended by the creator. And this is my least favorite form of writing. The same is done with art as famous as the Mona Lisa. It's a picture of a woman with a smirk. Why does there have to be a deeper meaning?
