My memory's a bit fuzzy on this, but is the "free" in XFree86 not a play on words? I seem to remember something about it being an "X for 386"... the 3 became a free. Or am I just hallucinating?
Yes, but that is not "pure" black market. For something closer to the black market Marcus was talking about you'd have had to live behind the Iron Courtain in the bad old days. WAY closer to the ideal "market economy".
Of course he lives in a different world. He did say "decently admined system". Those exist only - well, almost only - in a corporate environment.
Having said that, one doesn't really need the root password to do most things, "sudo" is your friend; and, it provides a little more logging so you can, generally, see who did what/when. One does have to give the "design" of the sudoers file some thought, though... which takes us right back to "decently admined system".
err... of the top of my head I can think of at least a couple "root-kits" that have been using this method to hide themselves. this has been around for a while.
I understand what you're saying, and I agree. Having said that... burned once shame on you, burned twice, shame on me. So, the first time I get burned by one of these sites if the last time I go there.
If you like that, have a look at the Buffalo products. I have a 120GB NAS - the HD-120LAN to be precise - that I picked up for just under US$ 200. They now have the same box with GigE support. (One can replace the 120 gig drive with a 250, which I will be doing next weekend.)
In one word: "Welcome to the NTT monopoly." (OK, so I can't count to one.)

An "Al Sharpton" like character in Japan would be taken out in a week, max, by the people in the black vans/buses. (For those not familiar with Japan, ultra right wing/nationalist groups drive around in converted buses that are painted all black and are full of slogans.)
Here in Japan they do even "better" they paint "dangerous" turns in red, or some similar colour. So, even if the turns were just barely worth mentioning before, now they are dangerous as this paint is really slick. Don't even want to talk about the rainy days... On the other hand the car drivers are MUCH MUCH more curteous.
And it will _barely_ buy me and my girlfriend dinner and drinks in a _moderately priced_ restaurant in Tokyo. Let's get serious, this kind of comparaison is all but useless.
I believe that is wrong, or old, info. My friend's parents were here a couple months ago and they went from Tokyo to Hirosima by Nozomi. They just had to pay a few thousand yen extra - sorry, I can't remember the details, but _definitely_ less than 10.000 for the two of them.
Well, the black market in the "iron courtain" countries was closer. IMHO, of course.

I am not sure that you need 2.6 for 8237 support; unless you have some "strange" MB.
lspci | grep 8237
2:00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8237 PCI Bridge
uname -a
Linux eggs 2.4.21-166-athlon #1 Thu Dec 18 18:24:05 UTC 2003 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
It's a Suse9 box. Also, if you are not "attached" to Linux, freeBSD 4.9 fully supports it too.

If you had _your_ server go up in smoke due to a nice slashdotting you wouldn't think it's a joke either. :-)

Of course, if we could just make spamming a capital crime, there would be PLENTY of bandwidth to go around!
You, my dear fellow, are one sick puppy. I like you!
Eastern side of the Kalahari. Hell, you can buy a big chunk of land too. :-)
My name _IS_ Andy. Can I turn my self in?
"real alternative" and "quicktime alternative" were made just for people like you.
Well, and me, actually.

Not bad, if I can say so myself.
(Mind you, I am now "forced" to use Linux 'cause I need vmware 4.x - USB related stuff.)
I understand what you're saying, and I agree. ... burned once shame on you, burned twice, shame on me. So, the first time I get burned by one of these sites if the last time I go there.
Having said that
Amazing, utter crap gets modded up to insightful, and the parent is still at "1".
Wish I had some mod points.:-(
You are trying to use logic and common sense. Are you perhaps forgetting where you are? This is Slashgimmegimmegimmedot.
Agreed, you should not _have_ to watch the ad. But, if you _choose_ to go to their site ... fair game. No?
Am I missing something?
Funny you should say that. I got this today from my provider:
:-)
"Price: FLET'S ADSL 40M
Monthly 1,230 yen
Yearly 12,300 yen"
(Today's exchange, 106 yen to the US$.)
Just as I was beginning to think that 1TB would be enough for a few months.

I would guess you are living in the US, or maybe Canada.
Traffic here in Japan would be a total shock to you. I, on the other hand, immediately thought PARADISE, when I arrived in Japan.
"Sorry, dude, cars outnumber you, so they make the rules."
Duuude, by that logic we should be all speaking Chinese.
And it will _barely_ buy me and my girlfriend dinner and drinks in a _moderately priced_ restaurant in Tokyo.
