Since th device does not seem to come with a wireless card, later SonicBlue will "suggest" that JC - not the Bible one - buy a "802.11.a" card??? Problem solved. No?
Damn. Really? I better let my friends, who have dual US/Japanese citizenships/passports, know.;-)
(The same myth is common in Japan..."Japan does not allow dual citizenship"... err... yes it does, you just need to know your rights, AND stand by them.)
I am not sure you know what you pay for when you colocate. It's the space, not the number of servers. So a tower would take at least 3U, conservative. I would drop a couple dual Xeon 1U SuperMicros in there for grunt work, and a 1U custom unit for the data backup. WAY WAY more performance. And, before you tell me about number of individual servers, that's why VMWare sells their higher end products.
Well... the world's samllest P4, at best. There are at least a couple places in Akihabara that sell PII based boxes that are 5 1/4"... too expensive and NOISY for me though.
Or, even better, I think, NFS mount the "distfiles" directory.
(Please note that I don't use Gentoo yet, so for all I know there is no NSF support in th eearly stages... One could use this for easily keeping all the systems up to date though.)
have a look at http://www.eaccess.co.jp/en/index.html and you will see 12m - look around for the details. (I am about to change to a 100m connection for only 9000 yen a month. YEAH!)
Fromn the article "N-series PCs will cost the same as PCs that ship with Windows, a Dell representative said."
Dell should make them at least somewhat less expensive than the ones sold with Windows. At least the labor they save on not having to slap the HD in the duplicator and then in the case.
And, as no doubt others will point out, why not load a useful OS on there.
Err, dude. How much time have you spent in Japan? Of that time, how much did you spend hanging out with the people in a position to make said "errors." I am no expert on the matters, but... let's say that so far the Japanese have been MUCH smarter at covering up.
I am not sure where in Japan you live, if, indeed, you live in Japan.
I have been here for a number of years, and have travelled all around the country. I have yet to see a place where ISDN was not available - although, there could well be. So, with FLETS ISDN there is no reason for anyone to pay NTT extra for anything.
That's why you have a "G-shock" phone. You pick it up, dump it in the sink, wash it off... carry on the conversation... if you can, as by this time the person at the other end has already passed out from laughing. (No, it didn't happen to me, but, it did to my freind more than once - much easier to drop it in when the crapper is "Japanese style.")
NTT has had for ages special calling plans for people who want to use computers to connect to the net. Before I got ADSL - by the way, always at or slightly above 1.5M and uncapped - I used to have that. The catch? It was from 11:00pm to 8:am. No complains here though, as I was/am a night owl.
That's list price, by the way. Unless this thing is going to be WILDLY popular, which I doubt, you'll be able to pick one up in Akihabara for at least 30% less. If I have time I will do a walkabout tomorrow and see how much they go for... if they are in the shops already, that is.
Any number of shops in Akihabara will sell you one of these integrated units - except for the FAX part...but I have seen at least one with a RS 232 port, so maybe something can be done...
I believe you are wrong. Office runs on machine "X" and ONLY on machine "X" as per EULA. No other machines can use the applications. Period. According to your earlier post, it would be OK for more than one person to use the same "Office" box. If so, would the licence forbid me from plugging my own keyboard/mouse/monitor in said box? I think not. VNC just provides the way to plug in my K/V/M remotely. I can't see how this would be against the EULA. The fact that Machine "Y" is able to see the scree of machine "X" can not matter any more than my walking with my own K/V/M and plugging them in.
Mind you, AINAL... and proud of it.

Why indeed? For the same reason I use XP on that computer in the first place...too lazy to change it. I use that laptop mainly for e-mail, NEED Outlook, and to watch the ocasional DVD, so I don't want to waste too much time "playing" with it. After spending all day performance tuning hard/software at work, the last thing I want to do is start the same process at home.

don't have a win9X box handy, but you can definitely do it in XP and win2K. I am doing it right now in XP.
you need to look at VMWare's other products ... "somewhat" expensive though.
