How about comparing Hacking to breaking into a mall after dark. Malls have locked doors and security and there is a thrill in getting it. Looking around and then leaving without people noticing. If you are caught the guard probably just tosses you out (after you explain you were looking for a washroom).
A cracker on the other hand would break into the mall to loot a store while it was closed.
The problem with networks is that they are public by definition. The house analogy is bad because you don't go to other peoples houses from your own house. It is not an access route to another house. On the other hand, if you had a really nice car, would you mind if someone was admiring it in the parking lot? Its a compliment, the same with a hacker that just probes a system without doing any harm. If that person were to then get in the car, that would be considered rude and could be equated with hacking a site and then putting up a new web page that says "I OWN THIS SITE D00DZ".
In conclusion:), I hate when people try to compare situations with computers to situations in physical life, because they tend to pick situations that cause the most FUD that they can use.
Ahh, I couldn't read past page 1 of the first article. The author mentions in his argument the hack of the british satellite that was later retracted. Sorry, but made me loose all credibility. That and the colour of green that he used. Ahh, horrible.
So really the open source community then is similar to the borg. There is a hive mentallity that since you are receiving benefits you should contribute to those and in turn, the community or hive operates better with fewer numbers than a closed community that is in turn less efficient.
I think its important to mention that it is because of new users that don't read the docs that linux has this myth of a great support community. Small disclaimer though, I'm baseing this on usenet help since I've never been to a lug. If you read comp.os.linux.setup/question/(I forget the group name), you'll find that all the questions follow along the same lines and are "how do I setup ppp in redhat". All of these questions are answered in docs somewhere or in an archive and the answers are just simply reposted again and again.
If you've already read through mailing lists, docs, man pages, archives, tried solutions and still have a problem and ask for help, you find that you don't even get a response with any suggestion of direction to look. Of course by this point, if the problem hasn't been solved then it isn't a common problem that stumps new users that can't read the docs, but is in fact a unique problem that only exists on your system.
Hey, stop mocking that comment. There are documented cases where people have used floppy drives as garbages, etc. The above average person is DUMB. nuf said.
I don't think he has to worry about it in Canada. Just look at This hour as 22 minutes and the other news parody show (I forget its name). Their prime time shows that really cut up everyone, and to my knowledge they havn't been sued
I don't mind if the cg is a bit bad. You will only notice is much in the still pictures, in the moving pictures it is a lot better ( I saw a pic of the battle droids in wired (I didn't buy it but I'm sure that there are some who bought it for that pic, it was two pages wide), but you could tell were the droids stopped and the real image began (not to lucas for future: droids have mas as well and when they stand on grass they will depress it instead of floating above it). But that's not what I think will be bad.
From what I've heard the acting of that boy (anakin (sp)) is really bad. The boy sucks, he's worse that mccalley calkin (sp; and I don't care). I just hope that the majority of the movie has more scenes with the true jedi's.
Oh, btw: Notice in the pre-quel trailer that the boy has a 50/50 polyester/cotton blend backback (including plastic buckle staps, etc; the kind that you'd buy for $20) but his closes are rugged knit cotton, ie circa 1800's peasant clothes. A bit of a blooper there...
okay, 237 + miguel makes 238 programmers working on GNOME. I thought that it was impossible to find out how many people actually contribute code to free software projects.
Wow, so that means if I carry around a pair of headphones, a microphone, another set of batteries, a car adapter (and a car, damn that'll be heavy) I can use my ce all day. Wow. You know, you make my pilot sound even better..
"Although remarking is a crime, overclocking isn't," Johnson said.
Wow. They actually admit this. Maybe they do have a clue of whats going on..
"..since almost every remarked processor is overclocked."
Personally I have never heard of a remarked processor that wasn't overclocked. What else is there, remarking a processor to its same clock? Remarking it so that the processor is underclocked? Or maybe remarking it so that its a n AMD chip or a Cyrix chip? None of these other remarkings make sense.
The decession to turn it into a theatre movie was done during production. At that point the scripting and characters stayed the same but their budget increased because it was going to the theatres. How do you turn a B-movie into a theatre movie. Right, you add special effects. Notice how the actors were proabably all paid for cheaply, the sets were paid for cheaply, but not that they have money, they have cool special effects..
A lot of people don't know that this is actually a B-movie. It was meant to be straight to video. But then one of the actors was in a big movie and they decided to try and scrape a little of the credit from that movie. Then star wars was comeing out so they wanted to get more of another movies hype. I like what one review said, it was like Starship troopers except not as creative.
Here's some advice. Avoid movies who's trailers have more shots of total cg (without any people in it) that shots with people (some of these shots might include cg). The one and only time I've seen the trailer for this movie it reminded me of Lost in Space. Way to much cg for a trailer = 1 big peice of (sensored for viewer discression).
Just look at sex as if it were distributed under the GPL. That would mean that only free, open-source sex is legal, and sex that is charged for would be illegal. Isn't that the case now? But what about porn. I guess maybe because its free between the people who are having it and it is the people who view are charged a fee it must mean that sex is actually under the LGPL. Any legal experts out there?
Have you given any thought that the linux community might be using anti-trust tactics similar to microsoft and intel. The charges against intel are roughly "support us and we'll give you detailed info on the chips". While admitadly the linux arguement is the reverse "give us detailed info on your chips and we'll support you, if you don't we'll ACTIVELY recommend that people don't support you". This was the tactic used against Toshiba. Granted, the linux community doesn't have a monopoly when it comes to numbers, there is anything but. But the linux community DOES have a monopoly. Businesses always like to have good publicity, and that means being in the "hype". Currently linux has a monopoly in the computing world where "hype" is concerned. And that was directly used against toshiba. During the last couple of weeks, there have been major announcements of whole companies (even whole software sectors) beginning to support linux. But, at the same time, there was an announcement from the linux community (granted, only from one group but there were no voices against it) stating that the Toshiba platform in general shouldn't be supported. Toshiba risked alienating what may possibly be the biggest computing trend at the turn of the millenium. They couldn't dare oppose that so we FORCED them to support us. Face it, open source also has a bad side (open sours) that can and will flex it muscle to get what it wants.

I forget where I first here this from but here goes:
"Make a computer easy enough for an idiot to use and only idiots will use it."

Can we now turn legs into wings. And if so. Does this mean that pigs can now fly?
