regardless of who manufactures it, I have access to the data. If I have access to the physical machine I have access to the data. If you are carrying sensitive information and the only thing blocking my access is a four digit code then you are an IDIOT regardless of what OS you are using.
Common people where is the news here? You actually think a Blackberry, Nokia or any other phone on the market today has any kind of encryption that can't be broken into with a bit of research.
The Apple ][ was the most popular PC back in it's time. Everyone was sure that the PC would just stagnate since hardly any apps or games were available when it was first released. As more and more competition starts building, the clients who are left with a sour taste in their mouths will move away. So far the early adopters who have the means to afford a voice and data plan are the ones who are starting to feel the bitter taste in their mouths. It does not take long to alienate your clients. I know as many people who have owned an iPhone and who have traded it in for something else than the people that I know who own one today.
This is the second smartphone I own and the value it adds does not compensate the value it lacks.
I remember when Apple was dying because of Steve Jobs.... Apple was thriving because it borrowed FreeBSD code and was humble and cooperative. As it converts itself to the NEW Apple it probably won't thrive as long because it starting to look a lot like the OLD Apple which couldn't see the forest from the trees.
There is a saying that is based on the word assume.
There is no logic to Apples actions. They are acting as if they are back in the 1980's. That almost sent them into bankruptcy but it also made them the second rate player that they are today trying to catch up to Windows.
As OS X does NOT need Apple to say which apps are OK so should the iPhone NOT need Apple. This is about control and greed and it WILL bite Apple in the ASS.
Hey Apple! Look at the great success you have by incorporating FreeBSD into your product. Cooperate and encourage the NEW MAC community and see how fast you will grow. Fight and alienate your users and developers and see how fast you crash. Take it from someone who has seen you at your best and at your worst. Sometimes you shine and other times your stench is unbearable......
Marketshare? What does market share have to do with this? OpenBSD is for security. Secure out of the box. Joe six pak has no need for security. So OpenBSD is not for them. FreeBSD has stability, standardization and has been consistent since almost it's inception. If you like BSD and need it to run on obscure hardware then NetBSD is for you. If you wish a stable desktop Linux or one of it's flavors. Linux is also a good server. Mac OS X is great if you want user friendly and can be customized if need be. Windows is great because everyone thinks they can support it and it runs a lot of business software.
Each and every one has its pros and cons and I'm glad that I CAN choose which I will use for a specific task. I couldn't see myself committing to any one in particular for all of my computing needs.
As for people who choose the OS based on market share, all I have to say is good luck with that...
Wow, all it took a computer illiterate friend of mine was 2 minutes of his time. Pop in CD. Answer a few question and presto he sat back and watched it install. Once done DHCP finished it up for him. He made a call to me and got his old scanner running in another 5 (scanner no longer supported in windows). I guess your mileage may vary.
This has been my experience with the last 10 installs. When a noob like him can do it anyone can.
My solution would be not to update iTunes until the support was there. My existing version will continue to support it way into the future. This new version of iTunes is broken.
Apple seams to be getting the same virus as microsoft. Apple needs to understand that alone Apple products are OK. What makes them shine is accessibility and portability. Combining my needs from one product to another that takes care of a different need is what makes good product into an excellent product in my opinion.
When a product is crippled by design like the iPhone it makes people wonder if Apple gets it? I have bluetooth but can't transfer a file unless I connect it through USB or install custom software. Common Apple get out of my way and let me use it as I need. I can view an excel or word document in an email but can't view one on the phone. I need to transfer files to systems that I do not own and that I cannot install iTunes on. Your getting in the way.
The only usable iPhone is a jailbroken one and this is not just coming from me. It's a frustration that a lot of people have and who stop using the iPhone until it's jailbroken and the functionality is added in or they spend money adding an app which adds this basic functionality that is found on every other cell phone on the market with bluetooth support.
I strongly believe the DMCA has crippled the minds of US corporations.
Nokia already syncs with iTunes, contacts and such. http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/nokia-multimedia-transfer and in some cases it is much better than iTunes. No need to connect any wires it will sync with bluetooth..... You can browse the files, change memory cards, thansfer file with bluetooth, full mp3 as ringtone unlike iphone which has a limit of ~40 seconds and needs to have the file renamed.m4r...
The only problem with Nokia is that they continue to allow the phone companies to cripple their phones. A nokia mp3 capable phone even maintains the itunes playlists. Common Nokia sell the phones directly to the public.
Are you for real? This is the same shit that MS did with Windows. If we allow this type of behavior in a very short time we will see vehicles which can only be refueled at specific gas stations. Appliances which can only be repaired by authorized vendors. etc...
They have no obligation to support but a deliberate attempt to disable a feature should be illegal.
I for one will NEVER purchase a product that I can't do with as I please for my personal use. If you deliberately break the product then I guarantee you will not see one red penny from me ever again. It's the main reason I don't purchase from iTunes.
Unfortunately that is a video of an unlock. They do not explain nor do they provide the software for a jailbreak. I understand their reasoning on why they are waiting.
The jail break is BETA. Meaning that some things may not work such as WinterBoard. Which crashes the phone.
Such as running the PC for over 5 to 7 years and then replacing it? Most business just need Office. Some still use W2K and a good anti-virus package. What support do SMB's need?
Some people are convinced that DRM is the only concievable reason for creating HDMI and all other claims offered are a smokescreen.
It's not that they are convinced it's that perfectly working solutions are HAMPERED by seamless or manufactured reasons. Some people have equipment in their living rooms which connects fine through traditional means and is a headache to connect through the one cable system called HDMI 1.3. DRM is not the only, but it is the main reason, followed by a continual stream of money. I have 2 such equipment that's why ALL my future TV's will have composite input until HDMI stops playing these little DRM games. (long story with a lot of finger pointing between motorola and toshiba, all I know is I'm stuck in the middle)
HDMI has a means of 2 way digital communication using existing 1.3 spec, so why would you even consider crippling it with 100Mbps Ethernet as an added feature? Why not use it as an additional data channel? The only answer is DRM. If I wish to hook up my TV to the Internet it will need an Ethernet port unless they start selling switches which have HDMI ports (very expensive solution from an equipment and cabling poit of view ). Otherwise the "appliance" that is connected to the TV with the HDMI cable can transfer any DATA through the digital HD Data channel. There is no reason why any new cable should be release at this time that should be called HDMI. It should be called HDMIE or HDMIS or HDMIHD or something else but not HDMI since it does not represent what has been marketed as HDMI. This is not about features. It's not about standards. It's about DRM and MONEY and how we can confuse the matter even more and sell more useless cables at exorbitant prices.
Why oh why would you even want to. Run your app locally transfer your file.
RDP is a tiresome solution to make you feel as if you are productive while wasting time. Yes I've used it and it's not as great as you make it sound. Depending on the version you're on you can lock yourself out if you don't log off your sessions.
On X, I would run the app remotely and display on my system if I really had to. Only had to do it once due to licensing issues. Wasn't slow just PITA like RDP.
I mark the article TROLL as soon as it tries to force Linux to become windows.
First and foremost on his point of Word vs. OOo; Try this for size, get 2 identical systems and load both with the same version of XP the, slower the system the more noticeable and evident it becomes. On one load MS Office on the other not. Reboot. The slowdown on boot with MS Office system is due to fact that it loads Office even when you don't need it.
Now almost everyone is doing this. The result? A system that was fast is now crawling.
I don't want this Windows sh1t on Linux. I don't want Linux to become Windows. I have serious work to do and don't have time for AV, adds and reboots.
First and foremost I will not buy any hardware that is not or does not support standards The short term gain means long term pain. I will not buy hardware / software that is not multiplatform. It needs to run on more than one OS which normally means my business is not dependent on the success of my supplier or their supplier. It also means that (as can be proven by experience) that support continues past EOL of the product. I have old equipment that are essential, they could be replaced but I have no NEED to, which are no longer supported on the Windows platform. As time goes on there are more and more reasons why NOT to chose Windows and how it gets very expensive if you do.
For the last 14 years I am not dependent on any one OS and I find the TCO of Windows to be 2 to 3 times the cost of alternative OS's.
The DVD comes from MS. It's in the install that determines the value. You can load a legitimate copy on multiple systems and they don't get flagged as pirated copies. The idea that I need to have a modified dvd image is for the uninformed. It's all in the activation code. It will only stop the uninformed not the bulk wholesaler.
Do you honestly believe that? WGA has NO way of stopping BULK wholesale pirate copies if the wholesaler knows what he is doing.
Keep dreaming in your little world because the day that MS gets it right is the day that they will loose market share. You can get complete systems cheaper than you can get a retail XP CD. either they will fill landfills or someone like myself will load an alternate OS.
I like general statements like this "there is no open source equivalant of Visual Studio and there is no MSDN of open source" because it tells me you are in a mindset that implies limitations are an asset. Visual Studio and MSDN do not support Sun, Linux, FreeBSD, Mac or any other third party OS that may have an advantage for a particular solution I may have to implement. I have a few solutions that IIS is not capable of handling because it does not support standards. In most cases it feels like IE depending what version you're on you need the corresponding development tools and then it might break what is already there.
As far as your other points it can also be said; On windows there is no common way to install and remove software. Not even on the same version of XP or VISTA for that matter can remove/uninstall a simple upgrade such as IE. Or for that matter drivers, games and all that sh1t that you have to sometimes put up with that people seem to take for granted.
There is absolutely now way to UPGRADE a live system from one version of Windows to the next in some instances you are unable to upgrade the software at all.
On Windows there is now way to swap out a hard disk from an existing system and place it in a newer system and have it work straight from a boot.
The stable base for drives has proven itself in Windows just by one word VISTA.
Give me choice not limitations. I have a business to run not software. I have a job to do, I need stable and flexible solutions not DRM, activation and artificial limitations.
Linux proprietary compared to Windows? What have you been smoking?
Gimp has advantages over Photoshop as Photoshop has advantages over Gimp sometimes you need to use both to achieve the required result sometimes you have no options.
Get off your high horse. If you get insulted by simple claims then you have more serious issues than what software you use.
Windows is great for some solutions but unfortunately it falls short more often than not. The trouble is, if you limit yourself to the MS solutions you may find yourself with your hands tied.
The police just proved that they have exceeded their power. If the claims are unsubstantiated there is no reason for use of FORCE, legal or otherwise. If they have a beef with a citizen then there are courts which should resolve the matter. Seizing equipment as described in the article would lead me to believe that the blogger was right.
You calculate the value of a PC by how long it lasts (time and usefulness) compared to the price you paid. I still have a useful 2001 G3. After eight years it comes out cheaper than any PC.
When you keep on buying the cheapest you start to forget what value is.
Why is this informative? How does windows handle this better than Linux?
For starters. Netboot. Same system image files. Writable NFS mounts. That's the quick and dirty way. Cost $0.00
There are limitless solutions to this problem and it all depends on your needs and budget. Managing the licenses on windows is a headache in itself. On Linux this is not an issue. On linux you can also swap out the drives onto newer motherboards and just reboot. You don't need site licenses and the only consideration is, can your infrastructure handle it.
The EASE on windows is only apparent by the limitations set by MS. Not everything works on windows even when you use MS products. In my experience it's a lot easier managing Linux deployments than windows deployments.
Why would you ever need to ssh into every box? But it's sure nice to know that with that one app I can manage my whole network remotely and it runs on my phone, XP, Vista, Mac, etc...
Just wondering, do you use GoToMypc to manage your MS boxes?/sarcasm
It's the attitude. get it out now, fix it latter. They got it out and are having trouble fixing it. What really surprises me is how so many people keep putting up with it.
I've been around before we had HD's. What I like the most is how people keep on telling me that you need anti-virus software. Never needed it. Don't have it. Would never run windows without it!
