What scares me is not that Microsoft is just doing it. It's that it seems to be that almost all of companies are doing it.
When did we let others decide that they can do whatever they wish with our property? I mean did they pay for my computer or did I? If the system was given to me then I can understand that the company who gave me the system has the right to profit in order to pay for the expense.
I feel that we need better laws to control marketing. Lies should be stopped. If a product does not follow a set standard then they should not be able to mention the standard. IPsec comes to mind. How many poor implementations are there? This accumulation of information should not be permitted unless a written agreement has been approved by both sides. Any changes to this agreement by either party would make it void without a new agreement.
Imagine that sometime in the near futur someone figures out a way to group all this data together and be able to trace every step you take....
It scares the S**T out of me and I'm a law abiding citizen.
It might also stop spam. I know in my last post I mention getting rid of POP3 and then I go and include it. Lets say we replcae POP3 with ETRN. SMTP holds the mail until you connect and sends it to you. Since you are directly connected and are receiving the mail at the same time it is being sent an option may be implemented just cookies in Konqueror where you have the option to reject the message. Your client the refuses the mail which bounces right back to the SPAMMER.
Now if this forces the spammer server to slow down we may hav less spam.
I'll call it and SMTP client. When it connects to the SMTP server it identifies the user and the users IP. The server forwards all messages to this IP. If it's unable to forward it places messages into a mailbox for POP3.
SMTP client first opens POP3 receives mail. Sends ID and IP to SMTP server. Client displays messages and relays messages through SMTP server.
No central server. Your email is your ID. nice and easy. Some detaisl to be worked out.
Sun can always add value to the product, support, training, manuals, dictionaries...
at one point the product will be mature. The cost of maintenance/programing will be reduced. Do honestly think that you would be unable to make a profit? If support is sold at $30/hour and support cost per hour are at $10/hour. It would leave you $20/hour to cover all other costs. You could have a ratio of 10 support to 1 programer. The only issue is that the number of clients needs to be in the millions because most people would not need support, as well as keeping the support staff busy.
The best thing for sun to do is sell the CD at around $25 and offer a value added service of 10 hours of support for lets say $100 prepaid. This will get people familliar with the product and the service. Once the prepaid has run out they can charge the full rate.
instead of "Put customer on hold and hope that he or she hangs up."
So what would you tell someone when you have to take a pee.
Stupid comment on a slow day, which I would preffer to spend at home, rather than reading a lame story posted on slashdot on easter friday which happens to be a very slow day?....Did I mention slow....oh yeah I did.
In any security situation all you would need to find is the weakest link. It doesn't matter how well that building is protected it needs to comunicate with the world and therfore this issue is more complex than it sounds.
You can't just bung Windows on commodity hardware and expect it to 24/7.
Why not? I can if I replace Windows with Linux of FreeBSD. As long as the hardware lasts it will run, then again if some one could write software that can repair hardware then it can run forever HAHAHAHAHAaaaaaa....NOT FUNNY I know
I'm sorry but it doesn't matter wich OS you use an expert costs the same.
But then again microsoft wants you to beleive that these idiots who can install MS Office and other software are IT experts. They spend an eternity filling in these forms, called configuration tools and have to wait for a service pack to secure a server. While it may work in some cases the time these individuals take to finish the job ends up costing you more than the true experts in the feild. Irrelavent which OS you use.
Are we talking about servers or desktops? In the case of desktops I would agree in the case of servers I beleive it would be more expensive to clean up than to do it right the first time.
MSOffice is not 100% compatible with MSOffice. Ever try transfering files from Mac to Windows. It's not exactly the same....and I'm still looking for MS office for my FreeBSD system...What? It doesn't exiost you say...I'll use StarOffice or Applix for now then...
Let's go back some years...(time travel)...We have a horse and buggy and the automobile.
A horse is simple to use.
It requires no feul, just grass.
It will not crash into things if you drink and drive. (at least not at a speed that will kill you)
It requires no roads.
It requires no special equipment.
ETC, etc....
It seems to me that owning a car is much more complex than a horse..polution...parking...drivers license...insurance..mechanic...gas...etc
But the car rules today!
There are VCR's today wich are harder to program than routers, and most people are able to program these VCR's. The more we ask of the computer the more comlex everything gets. I would prefer to have one or two systems which would replace all these boxes which clutter my home...ie 3 VCR's, SNES, N64, Answering system, Sound system, house alarme , thermostat, microwave, stove(clock), alarmclock...all of which have there own way of being programed.
Imagine everything connected to one system. You only set the clock once after a power outage. You would not have to learn a new interface/programing language with every appliance you bought. I think this is where we are going...and will not be simpler...it will get more complex..
It's Friday and it has been a loooong week. I hope this rant makes sense to y'all...
It reminds me a few months back I went to site that required FLASH(since it was big co I will not advertise their site). There was no other way to view the site without FLASH. So I sent them a little email asking them if they were promoting flash or their product. The site now supports HTML. I do not think that my email made them change their attitude but sales would have a hard time explaining to management why they lost a client due to flash.
I think that this would apply to any website. Companies are creating websites to make $$$$. If they feel they are loosing sales trust me they will support standards.
You make a good point since most of the marketing hypes up the movie to expectations that connot be met by the crap that is being produced. It just seems it's all cookie cutter productions.

No this reminds me when the first IBM PC (8088) came out. When you bought the system you hardly had any software and those who could afford a $6,000 system had no money left over for software. The systems were sold bare bones compared to today. The sales staff were clueless and would allow anyone to use the system. Most people would put in their own 5.25 floppy disks. At that time, as on the Mac no installation was required, simply copy c:\filename.ext a: and voila you had the program.
If you had the time you just had to wait about 30 minutes before someone would just walk up and copy. The sales staff were completely clueless to what was going on.
But you have not explained how to intergrate a Mac and UNIX into this picture. As long as it's Windows yeah sure it may work for now....
Now how can I run XP on a P133 32Meg RAM? Should I just trow this into the garbage? How well does XP intergrate with Win3.1.
This P133 runs my accounting. Fast!!! Yes it's text based but trust me it's fast. Since it's only running accounting I don't have to worry about any other aps or people. Nice! Clean! Cheap! and did I mention FAST!
Why are you waiting for their OK? If this was MS it would be at version 3 already. The beta of open source is more reliable than most MS versions. The true final of an MS version is after SP2.
Yes I agree with your point about minimums but what scares me about micro-payments is that someone opens a site and starts spamming people with embeded/popup pages, (it's been a long day and I can't think of the correct term). If micro-payments a successfull I think we would get these kind of spammers. You would not expect someone to enter his username and passwd everytime he opens your page, would you?
Either I'm missing something or the system has to be a little better in it's design.
I would realy like to know how micro-payments will work. Charging a penny per page is just not collectable. CC companies will not pass a $.02 charge on a credit card. If we are required a deposit, say $20.00 to open an account, how many accounts would you open??? If we ask our ISP to charge us, How do you stop spammers from reffering to casini, pr0n, etc...
When did we let others decide that they can do whatever they wish with our property? I mean did they pay for my computer or did I? If the system was given to me then I can understand that the company who gave me the system has the right to profit in order to pay for the expense.

Do we have a resource with more info on this issue?
Who in his right mind would moderate that up???

It's about stupid inventions silly.
Microsoft bashing
That's what we do here at
completely pointless
Yup! So is this article. In case you haven't noticed the serious comments are few and far between.
This remindes me of people who ask you what you would wish for and then tell you what you should wish for.
Oh no... thats useless...everything they say is FUD.
So what would you tell someone when you have to take a pee.

I wonder what nintendo has to say about it???
This is documented in their manuals.
