  1. Blogging has become a powerful medium on The Future of the Blog · · Score: 2, Insightful

I can vouch for the popularity of blogging. It helps to share ideas and bring together people with similar tastes. I can't even envisage going back to the time when one had to write html code to put up a webpage.

Now a days blogging has become as simple as writing a document in a wordprocessor.

And the power of the blogger to shake down the established news sites is something to be taken note of. For example, I first came to know about the Sony DRM fiasco through a blog on the net where the blogger had detailed his experiences rather than through news sites or newspapers. And the sound bytes created by the bloggers did give a lot of bad publicity to sony corp.

Why should Red Hat go and start a seperate project to achieve more or less the same effects ? Can't they work with the XGL project team and improve on the existing code ? What good will re-inventing the wheel or duplicating the code help achieve? Reading about this takes me back to the 80s when the UNIX OS was severely fractured with applications working on one Unix flavor not running on another flavor of Unix. Even though Red Hat is doing a good thing, it is actually taking a step back by forking the project.

  4. Is this a case of david defeating the goliath on Microsoft Keeps Eye on Open-Source Prize · · Score: 4, Insightful

Ultimately, Microsoft is coming round to the fact that it cannot write away the open source movement. There is a very popular saying : If a group of weak sticks are bound together, the combined strength can be even more than a single stout stick.

GNU/Linux and Open Source softwares are like the multiple weak sticks which have come together to become very strong. And microsoft is realising that it is not going to be a cake walk any longer.

The end users are the one who are going to benefit from the whole thing.

This trend is really disconcerting for people living outside the US. As far as china is concerned, it is entirely a different story. Communism and capitalism can be equated to the devil and the deep sea. Both are not good for the nations. If one ideology generates oppression, the other inculcates greed.

That is exactly what is happening in the internet arena too. And yahoo is leading the way in pulling potential search users in using their search engine by luring them with freebies.

India has made great strides in Space. Now when I say it I am not being rhetorical. The space (satellites) program of India has helped bring cheap education to far flung, hard to reach areas. It gives upto the minute accurate weather reports and is one of the sources of weather forcasts of TV channels in India, India is aiming to jump into the select club of countries which have the capability of launching commercial sattelites over a specified weight thus bringing much needed foreign exchange. The sattelites give credible data which aids the scientists in the search for untapped (new) water bodies in the country. And these sattelites are the backbone for the mobile (telecommunication) revolution that is taking place in India at present.

So it is not just national pride that is making India take up space research seriously. It has put the technology to credible use which has brought a lot of comforts to the people living there.
