  1. Re:Why televisions, though? on California Publishes Television Efficiency Standards For 2011 · · Score: 1

When they say modern tv, they mean one which has the ability to gather guide data. There are a number of those types which essentially are running a small pc all the time, even while "off", for the purposes of updating guide data. If they didn't, the guide could get out of date while the tv was off. That wouldn't bother me, but the manufacturers apparently don't think it's a good thing. So they use the owner's power.

I'm in MD, & I think they have a warehouse in PA, so proximity helps, but I never notice stuff in limbo for days. If it has to come from CA, it obviously takes longer. In the last few years, out of maybe 100+ orders, they have screwed up one (sent me someone else's stuff) and that was easily sorted out. Amazon's pretty good, buy.com can be good, but newegg for computer stuff is the best I have found.

If they are out of copyright, you might well be able to get a free copy from Project Gutenberg, but if you you want it neatly bound and printed, Amazon will send it to you. This is the case with Notes On Nursing - you can get it here: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/12439. Maybe the U of Mich version is better edited, formatted, etc; there are lots of ways to improve on Project Gutenberg books. If they are merely out of print, I guess they will have some way for copyright holders to either get paid or be able to stop the printing.

That's true, but sometimes the general purpose devices just offer a much better value proposition. I was recently on a sailboat; the nav system was a laptop with special software (Tiki) which can load NOAA charts, etc. The cost of the laptop + software is lower than a dedicated device, so it's a reasonable choice even if it's not quite as good, especially since you'd want the laptop (or smartphone) anyway. And some of the things you can do with the general purpose device you might not be able to do otherwise - most dedicated boat GPS systems don't have internet access, so can't offer worldwide buddy tracking like that Tiki software can.
