As it is, the current systems effectively have direct link interconnects to the system chipset. The Bensley workstation and server platform gives each CPU package its own bus so it's not causing contention with bus sharing. Kentsfield and Clovertown throw a bit of a wrench to that but that will be rectified in 2007 when Intel releases a single die four core chip.

Is Intel really selling any of the chips at a loss?

Sun's engineering expertise centered around providing software and hardware for large organizations. I don't think they can take that expertise and apply it well to consumer electronics. Save for Java, nothing they have done has come anywhere near consumer conciousness or use, and even then, Java is pretty well hidden.

Partial disclosure: I happen to have a couple Macs that I regularly use. I like the OS though I wish there were some better choices made with respect to the hardware, especially the desktops.

This is an excellent point. As much as I don't like my computers beeping, chiming or clanging, it's short and happens only once. And it only takes one click in the sound preference to disable the standard user interface sounds, so that's easy to kill.

I usually have my sound system turned off, and I rarely reboot, so I'm usually never aware of the chime. The only time I bother with sound is when I want to play a video.

If battery time, weight and heat are your concern, you will want the L series or U series Core Duo, which are rated for about 15W and 9W, respectively. They tend to be used in the ultralight notebooks. Going with the T series Core Solo won't help much because that's rated at 27W.
